An Exploration of Office Design: Understanding the character of our workplacesDe Klerk, Sunica 09 December 2013 (has links)
The workplace environment is intrinsically
dynamic, yet architecturally it is treated as
something that is fixed. Functional layouts
specific to the thinking of the time (zeitgeist)
are built into the structure leaving little
opportunity for adaptation. Frank Lloyd
Wright’s Johnson Wax building is one such
example; built to function in the Taylorist
paradigm with little scope for alteration.
The contemporary workplace often lends
itself to the adaptive reuse of a range of
building typologies or the construction of
new structures with Green Star ratings.
At the same time, a significant amount of
office buildings, constructed prior to the
green building movement of the 1990’s, are
still in use, despite the typically hermetic
and unhealthy spaces they contain. The
possibility of adapting an office building from
pre-1990 building stock is investigated.
Previous workplace layouts inhibited
conversation (since interaction in the
workplace was frowned upon), but today
workplaces are designed with social
interaction as its core. The largely unused
potential of this aspect within corporate
culture and the influence it might have on
spatial organisations is investigated.
Interior architecture, as mediator between
office buildings’ accommodation and their
dynamic programs, forms the premise of
the study. The hypothesis that an interior
architectural intervention can make a positive
translation from an unhealthy to a healthy
building is tested by designing for the
interplay between the character of a space
and its design elements.
The design process is guided by the Open
Building methodology of fixed, semi-fixed
and loose-fit. The intervention translates this
methodology into a responsive and context
conscious proposal with an emphasis
on the users and their sense of place.
Finally, traditional architectural elements
are reinterpreted in terms of their ability to
enable or disable interaction between users
according to the theory of social friction.
Three types of interaction are considered:
official meetings, casual meetings and
chance encounters. Human interaction,
central to the creation of a workplace as
opposed to a work space, is a constant
theme throughout the study. / Dissertation MInt(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2013 / Architecture / MInt(Prof) / Unrestricted

Comparing speech recognition and touch tone as input modalities for Technologically unsophisticated usersKafidi, Petrus L 13 June 2005 (has links)
Using an automated service to access information via the telephone has become an important productivity enhancer in the developed world. However, such automated services are generally quite inaccessible to users who have had little technological exposure. There has been a widespread belief that speech-recognition technology can be used to bridge this gap, but little objective evidence for this belief has been produced. To address this situation, two interfaces, touchtone and speech-based, were designed and implemented as input modalities to a system that provides technologically unsophisticated users with access to an informational/transactional service. These interfaces were optimised and compared using transaction completion rates, time taken to complete tasks, error rates and user satisfaction. The speech-based interface was found to outperform the touchtone interface in terms of completion rate, error rate and user satisfaction. The data obtained on time taken to complete tasks could not be compared as the DTMF interface data were highly influenced by people who are not technologically unsophisticated. These results serve as a confirmation that speech-based interfaces are more effective and more satisfying and can therefore enhance information dissemination to people who are not well exposed to the technology. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Computer Science / unrestricted

Implementation of vital sign detection algorithms on a high-performance digital signal processorPettersson, Tobias January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates the possibility of detecting weak vital signs, such as heartbeat and respiration rate, through the implementation of quadrature demodulation and frequency spectrum algorithms on a high performance digital signal processor. This thesis has been part of an ongoing research project at Linkoping University, with the aim to develop a sensor platform for wireless measurements of these vital signs. This sensor platform has been expected to consist of two major physical devices, a RF-radar front-end including a quadrature multi-port and a processing back-end which holds the implementation of the algorithms to detect the vital signs. The back-end consists of a data acquisition- and a processing-part which together forms the digital signal processor. The results show that the implemented algorithms works in terms of being able to find artificial vital signs from quadrature signals. This result also confirms that the hardware solution proposed during this thesis, has been considered as viable for the aim of the project.

Výběr vhodného softwaru z pohledu vícekriteriálního rozhodování / Choice of the suitable software from the viewpoint of multi-criteria decision makingMašátová, Jana January 2010 (has links)
In today's world there are many different substitutes for most products and services, increasing the demands on decision-making among substitutes. In order to make a decision, it may be very helpful to use multi-criterial methods for evaluating of the options, which are available to the general public through special programs. Thank to these programs, the general public does not have to be informed in detail about multi-criterial methods and can use the convenience of multi-criteria analysis. The aim of this thesis is to describe and compare the publicly available noncommercial czech software that allows the simplification of choice when choosing from several options according to specified criteria. The thesis work is focused on discrete models of evaluation that are simpler and more suitable for pre-defined alternatives. Non-commercial programs, many of which were created at universities, are evaluated in this thesis. Furthermore, some very well-known evaluation methods, which appear in some programs, are presented.

Visualiseringar av en driftsgrensanalys : Ett användargränssnitt utvecklat för ett ekonomiskt och produktionstekniskt analyssystem med en användarcentrerad utvecklingsprocess / Visualization of an Analysis of Operating Branches : A User Interface Developed for an Economic and Production Technical Analysis System with a User-centered Design ProcessGunnarsdotter, Petra January 2021 (has links)
This report presents a development of an analytic tool for advisors, developed with a usercentred design process. The tool is developed to help advisers enhance profitability in a company in a simple and flexible way, and to convey the knowledge to their customers. The report focuses on usability and visual representations to present data from an analysis of the operating branches as well as key performance indicators. The work has a usercentered design process divided into four steps and performed by a pre-study and two iterations. The prestudy was the basis of the project, which included a literature study, interviews compiled to two persons and an effect map. The first iteration began with exploring different visual representations for an analysis of the operating branches and key performance indicators. The visual representations were user-tested through a questionnaire. The second iteration developed the tool by designing and implementing a prototype in the program React in order to be user-tested. The test focused on the visual representations and was performed through task-based questions, Likert-questions about the visual representation and the standardized questionnaire System Usability Scale. The report concluded that users thought that bar graphs, tables and texts are the easiest tools to use. The visual representations can therefore be used to visualize economic values. However, a bullet graph was more likely to be chosen in order to visualize key performance indicators. Bullet graphs contain a lot of information, which makes the diagram complex for the user to understand. A simple and fast tool should therefore be limited and use the details-on-demand of the information visualization mantra to enable the user to obtain more information when needed. The tool is not fully developed and more iterations are needed to complete a final product.

The Evolution of HUD in The Elder Scrolls and Deus ExPettersson, Jesper, Wigg, August January 2021 (has links)
This thesis explains the process of two researchers conducting a formal analysis of the graphical user interfaces (GUIs), specifically the heads-up displays (HUDs), of the main entries of the two game series The Elder Scrolls (1994 - 2011) and Deus Ex (2000 - 2011). The goal: to see how the evolution of their HUDs over time compare and to analyse them. After playing the games and taking notes about their HUDs, the researchers find that there is a common trend between the two series. The HUDs become more simplified over time, with some non-critical elements of the HUD being removed. They also become more precise at instructing and informing players about how to play the games. While similar additions and changes are made, the timing is different and the researchers conclude that further research is necessary in order to decide if the observed pattern of HUD evolution is unique to the two series or can hold up as a framework for a larger selection of games. As is, this thesis presents the patterns and trends within the heads-up display design of the observed games as well as a library of the observed games’ GUI elements, that future GUI designers and researchers can use to be made aware of past design decisions and revisions that has been common throughout several other games within the genre.
