Model-based Regularization for Video Super-Resolution

Wang, Huazhong 04 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, we reexamine the classical problem of video super-resolution, with an aim to reproduce fine edge/texture details of acquired digital videos. In general, the video super-resolution reconstruction is an ill-posed inverse problem, because of an insufficient number of observations from registered low-resolution video frames. To stabilize the problem and make its solution more accurate, we develop two video super-resolution techniques: 1) a 2D autoregressive modeling and interpolation technique for video super-resolution reconstruction, with model parameters estimated from multiple registered low-resolution frames; 2) the use of image model as a regularization term to improve the performance of the traditional video super-resolution algorithm. We further investigate the interactions of various unknown variables involved in video super-resolution reconstruction, including motion parameters, high-resolution pixel intensities and the parameters of the image model used for regularization. We succeed in developing a joint estimation technique that infers these unknowns simultaneously to achieve statistical consistency among them. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Teacher learning via video instruction: Five case studies

Hauser, Doreen Ann, 1961- January 1988 (has links)
This research was conducted to study how five home economics teachers learned three new teaching techniques through an in service distance education project. The researcher looked specifically at: (1) How effective were video assisted self-instructional packets for teaching individual learners new methods of instruction? (2) How do teachers transfer knowledge of a particular method to actual classroom use? (3) Is there a relationship between one's learning style and style of teaching? Each case study draws upon data from the participant's background, test scores, interviews, self-reports, staff reports, student products, and observations. In three cases, it was concluded that learning style may influence style of teaching. The two teachers who were unable to transfer the information did not have consistent learning styles, were not comfortable users of the media, and reported having too many things going on in their personal life which interfered with the learning process.

A Comparison of Various Video Compression Methods for Use in Instrumentation Systems

Rieger, James L., Gattis, Sherri L. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Various forms of 'lossy' and 'lossless' encoding have been implemented or proposed to allow compression of still and motion picture images, with varying degrees of success which in turn depend on how success is defined. Proponents of various systems claim 'compression ratios' which by their nature defy comparison of one system with another and suggest there actually may be something like a free lunch. This paper compares various compression methods as well as the implications involved in using them and what happens when different systems encounter the problems associated with the uses of the restored picture.

Wavelet Based Video Compression for A Low-Rate Data Link

Landry, Michael W., Lee, Jeffrey C. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Conventional video image transmission requires large data bandwidths, whether the signals are transmitted in analog or digital form. Many applications are limited to bandwidths that will not support image transmission unless high compression ratios are employed. Video compression techniques based on wavelet functions provide high data compression while preserving image quality, but are computationally demanding. Recently available high-integration devices that utilize wavelet basis functions for video compression have made possible low-cost high-performance video compression systems. Image data is more useful when provided with other data such as position information, telemetry, or other user data. This paper describes the technology, features, and limitations of a versatile low data rate system incorporating compressed video data.

Nam, Ju-Hun, Choi, Byeong-Doo, Ko, Sung-Jea, Kim, Bok-Ki, Lee, Woon-Moon, Lee, Nam-Sik, Yu, Jea-Taeg 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2005 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2005 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / In this paper, we present an efficient real-time implementation technique for Motion-JPEG2000 video compression and its reconstruction used for a real-time Airborne Video Telemetry System. we utilize Motion JPEG2000 and 256-channel PCM Encoder was used for source coding in the developed system. Especially, in multiplexing and demultiplexing PCM encoded data, we use the continuous bit-stream format of the PCM encoded data so that any de-commutator can use it directly, after demultiplexing. Experimental results show that our proposed technique is a practical and an efficient DSP solution.

Advance Organizers with Video Instruction on Industrial Vocational High School Students' Listening Comprehension

蔡朱蓉 Unknown Date (has links)
Video-aided English learning programs have been prevalent among students to facilitate listening skills so far. The purpose of the study is to apply a proven effective treatment of Advance Organizer (AO)—vocabulary pre-teaching and pre-questioning —with video to improve students’ listening comprehension, and to differentiate the treatment effect on students of different proficiency levels. The participants in this study are 145 first-year vocational high school students in the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Interior Designing. Two equivalent tests of the listening comprehension section of GEPT-Elementary Level are used as the pretest and posttest. Students are divided into high, middle and low proficiency groups according to the pretest scores. During the 16-week treatment duration, the experimental group receives AO instruction along with the supplementary videos—Family Album, U. S. A . and A+English, while the control group receives the same videos without any treatment instruction. Two questionnaires, the English Learning Orientation Survey and the Self-Reflection Questionnaire, serve to elicit background profiles of the participants to cross-examine the relations with their test performance. The results show that students receiving the AO with video instruction make significant progress on listening comprehension performance. It is also found that the effect is especially appreciable for students of high proficiency level. Based on the findings, this study proposes some pedagogical implications for industrial vocational high school teachers and indicates a direction to steer English listening instruction in vocational high schools.
