Optimizing Accessibility in Music Streaming Services : Research on how to provide access to music for the visually impaired / Optimera tillgänglighet i musikströmmande tjänster : Studie i hur man ger tillgång till musik för synskadade

Sporrong, Klara January 2017 (has links)
Accessibility is important in the development of digital products as well as in physical products. An accessible product enables all people to use it, whether they have a disability or not. This thesis focuses on accessibility for visually impaired people in a music streaming service on desktop. Many music streaming services for desktop are built with web technologies, including Spotify. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the accessibility status of the Spo- tify desktop application as well as develop accessibility guidelines fo- cused on a music streaming service. A user test was performed to in- vestigate the accessibility status of the desktop application. Existing accessibility guidelines was studied and used together with the results of the user test to develop accessibility guidelines applicable to a music streaming service. It was found that the Spotify desktop application had many accessibility issues and these were considered when developing accessibility guide- lines. The existing guidelines studied was the WCAG 2.0 guidelines developed by W3C. These were read through completely and compiled in Chapter 4 of this report. The result of the thesis was accessibility guidelines suitable for a music streaming service on desktop. Since music streaming applications can be developed using different techniques and frameworks these guide- lines should be used as a guide on how to implement accessibility and needs to be customized for each use case. Though the fundamentals of the guidelines should be applicable to most music streaming desktop applications.

Development of a Multiple Contact Haptic Display with Texture-Enhanced Graphics

Burch, David 10 May 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents work towards the development of a multiple finger, worn, dynamic display device, which utilizes a method of texture encoded information to haptically render graphical images for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The device interacts directly with the computer screen, using the colors and patterns displayed by the image as a means to encode complex patterns of vibrotactile output, generating the texture feedback to render the image. In turn, the texture feedback was methodically designed to enable parallel processing of certain coarse information, speeding up the exploration of the diagram and improving user performance. The design choices were validated when individuals who are blind or visually impaired, using the multi-fingered display system, performed three-times better using textured image representations versus outline representations. Furthermore, in an open-ended object identification task, the display device saw on average two-times better performance accuracy than that previously observed for raised-line diagrams, the current standard for tactile diagrams.

An exploratory study of screen-reader users navigating the web

Jobst, Jennifer Elizabeth 27 April 2015 (has links)
Researchers have learned much about how sighted individuals seek information on Web sites - for example, users follow "information scent" as they move from page to page, and individual differences may impact successful information seeking on the Web. While it is possible that individuals with disabilities, especially those with severe visual impairments, perform information-seeking activities in a similar manner, little is known about how individuals who use screen readers to navigate actually seek information on the Web. In this study, we used both qualitative and quantitative measures to investigate the Web navigation techniques of four screen-reader users and how a user’s experience affects these navigation techniques and his or her ability to successfully complete an information-finding task. We compared metrics for between-page and within-page navigation to studies of sighted users. We also considered how a Web site’s compliance with Section 508 guidelines affects the overall information-finding experience of a visually-impaired individual. We discovered that among the four individuals in this study, user experience was not necessarily indicative of a successful information-finding experience. As individuals, the participants' navigation techniques varied widely; as a group, they generally searched more frequently and used the back button less frequently than has been reported for sighted individuals. Screen-reader users in this study followed a more flimsy, linear navigation style and generally used scrolling actions rather than searching actions. When using a Web site that has a Section 508 compliant home page, we found that the screen-reader users in this study completed information-finding tasks significantly more quickly, used significantly fewer actions, and reported a more satisfying information-finding experience. They were also more successful at finding the information goal and encountered fewer impasses. Using both quantitative and qualitative measures was critical in this study. The quantitative metrics allowed us to compare values and the qualitative data provided additional insight into individual differences as well as allowing a deeper understanding of the quantitative data. The information from this study contributes to the growing body of research knowledge about screen-reader users. It also contributes a new understanding of screen-reader users that can be used by the worldwide community of Web developers, designers, and users. / text

Towards Building iBeacon-based Smart Indoor Environments for Visually Impaired Users

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Improving accessibility to public buildings by people with special needs has been an important societal commitment that is mandated by federal laws. In the information age, accessibility can mean more than simply providing physical accommodations like ramps for wheel-chairs. Better yet, accessibility will be fundamentally improved, if a user can be made aware of important location-specific information like functions of offices near the user within a building. A smart environment may help a new person quickly get acquainted about the environment. Such features can be more critical for cases of making an indoor environment more accessible to people with visual impairment. With the intention to promote the integration of visually impaired people in society, this thesis efforts on methodologies for building smart and accessible indoor office environments with the help of Apple's Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology called iBeacon to provide location awareness and enable easy access to information about the environment to people with visual impairment. This thesis presents work done on developing an iterative based approach in improving the configuration of given number of iBeacons to gain optimal signal coverage in a given office space environment and enabling smart features such as tagging points of interest and push notifications. This work aims to exploit the idea to look at visual impairment beyond the level of disability and cash it at as an opportunity to bring about a change of style of living. This work develops a methodology by introducing an end-to-end systems that uses intelligent server side and visually-impaired-friendly client side interfaces to give a prototype of an assistive technology to help them do basic activities like getting familiarized about an office environment without the need for asking for assistance. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2017

Construction and evaluation of online course on prevention of hypertension for blind people / ConstruÃÃo e avaliaÃÃo de curso online para pessoas cegas sobre prevenÃÃo da hipertensÃo arterial

Luciana Vieira de Carvalho 13 January 2015 (has links)
FundaÃÃo Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico e TecnolÃgico / Due to altered visual function, blind people are more exposed to risk factors of hypertension, a situation that proves the need to promote educational actions to prevent this disease. The objective was to develop affordable online course for the blind ones on prevention of hypertension. It was used Development Model of Digital Educational Material composed by five phases entitled Analysis and Planning; modeling; implementation; Evaluation and Maintenance; Distribution. In Analysis and Planning phase the product was characterized. The course about hypertension in online mode was directed to blind population. It was built in modeling a script and it was added a content to multimedia elements, being transformed into the pages for internet format with definition of navigation tools and design. There was obtained 15 pages that were divided into six educational modules. The study followed the accessibility standards of national documents (e-MAG) and international (WCAG). In the Deployment it was submit the accessibility evaluating course pages. Initially we used the software ASES that generated Error Reporting, accusing infringement of four national recommendations and three international principles. The pages were reviewed, and the inconsistencies were corrected. In the second test, the pages were lodged into SOLAR environment. It was contacted four blind people whom rated platform accessibility and usability of the platform by performing sequential activities of navigation. It was found that the SOLAR is partially accessible as it found some accessibility barriers (lack of field identification, disposal and inadequate identification fields and links; elements that prevented reading the content in a logical sequence and using the mouse). Therefore, the SOLAR needs improvement to facilitate navigation by the blind. The course components such as texts; images; audio and links were considered accessible, and the initial difficulty in navigation was, to be hosted, on the platform that needed improvements. The Evaluation and Maintenance occurred throughout the course preparation and the distribution will be addressed in further studies. The course did not suffer any changes and the prototype implemented in SOLAR was taken as the result of the research. It concludes that build online course as assistive technology for the blind is a viable task. This study provides information about prevention of hypertension and equal access to digital educational materials. The study encourages nurses to develop affordable technologies for health promotion of blind people.

Foram apresentadas, finalmente, sugestões para a promoção do desenvolvimento de crianças com esse perfil, centradas nos processos de interação e significação / Abstract: Studies on the development of children with visual impairment, associated with other deficiencies, indicate risks on their development. In the present study, it was observed the interaction of children with this profile, in the context of educational groups, and it was described processes of appropriation of social practices. Taking into account that, in the historical-cultural perspective, the semiotic dimension of the activities and human interactions is central in the constitution of subject, the children actions and the signification processes in the interior of interactional dynamic were seen as possible places to understand the development of those children. One of the focuses of analysis was the different uses of objects, the participation in activities and the language of the children. On the methodological point of view, three case studies were presented. It was done a microgenetic analysis, clipping the material collected in episodes significatives for the purpose of the study. The children, aged between 4 and 10 years, participated of an intervention and research program at a university center, for children with visual impairment. Three children with severe developmental alterations (neurological or syndromic problems, alteration in linguistics, social and cognitive development) were selected from the groups. The weekly sessions were filmed and transcribed, and the data were analyzed regarding the social practices and the interactional dynamic between the subjects (adults and children). From the analysis it was possible to identify processes of social practices appropriation (exemple: the use of a ta), different uses of objects (exemple: the use of a glue), different levels of participation in activities (exemple: nursery rhymes) and different uses of language (exemple: nomination of objects) by children. It was also observed different modes of adults¿ intervention: who organized the situation, proposed activities and gave significance to the children¿s actions. The observation from microgenetic analysis gave visibility to different instances of social practices appropriation and aspects on the adults¿ intervention that contributed for it. It was discussed the fact that the problem with those children is more related to the difficulties on the stabilization of developmental processes than to ¿delays¿, linearly qualified. The analysis evidenced the importance of the interaction and signification processes in the constitution of subjects. There were presented suggestions to promote the development of children with this profile, centered in the interaction and signification processes / Mestrado / Saude da Criança e do Adolescente / Mestre em Saude da Criança e do Adolescente
