The Effect of Clay Content and Iron Oxyhydroxide Coatings on the Dielectric Properties of Quartz Sand

Cangialosi, Michael Vincent 05 June 2012 (has links)
Dielectric constant is a physical property of soil that is often measured using non-invasive geophysical techniques in subsurface characterization studies. A proper understanding of dielectric responses allows investigators to make measurements that might otherwise require more invasive and/or destructive methods. Previous studies have suggested that dielectric models could be refined by accounting for the contributions of different types of mineral constituents that affect the ratio and properties of bound and bulk water. This study tested the hypothesis that the dielectric responses of porous materials are mineral-specific through differences in surface area and chemistry. An experimental design was developed to test the dielectric behavior of pure quartz sand (Control), quartz sand/kaolin clay mixtures and ferric oxyhydroxide coated quartz sand. Results from the experiments show that the dielectric responses of quartz-clay and iron oxyhydroxide modified samples are not significantly different from the pure quartz Control. Increasing clay content in quartz sands leads to a vertical displacement between fitted polynomials. The results suggest that the classic interpretation for the curvature of dielectric responses appears to be incorrect. The curvature of dielectric responses at low water contents appears to be controlled by unknown parameters other than bound water. A re-examination of the experimental procedure proposed in this study and past studies shows that a properly designed study of bound water effects on dielectric responses has not yet been conduct / Master of Science

A Laboratory Study on the Effect of High Rap and High Asphalt Binder Content on the Performance of Asphalt Concrete

Boriack, Paul Christian 11 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the effect of added asphalt binder content on the performance and volumetric properties of asphalt concrete mixes containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). Mixes with three different percentages of RAP (0%, 20%, 40%) obtained from an asphalt producer and three different percentages of asphalt binder (design asphalt content, design +0.5%, and design +1.0%) were evaluated. Additionally, a laboratory produced mix containing 100% RAP with four asphalt binder contents (0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%) was also evaluated in order to determine the binder level that optimizes mix performance for the extreme case in RAP utilization. Performance of the mixtures was evaluated based on three criteria: stiffness (dynamic modulus), fatigue resistance (flexural beam), and rutting resistance (flow number). Results showed that a 0.5% increase in binder content improved both the fatigue and rutting resistance of the 0% and 20% RAP mixes with only slight decreases in dynamic modulus. However, the addition of various amounts of binder to the 40% RAP mix led to a significant decrease in rutting resistance with little or no improvement to fatigue resistance. Volumetric analysis was performed on all of the mixes to determine how the added binder content affected mix volumetric properties. Results of volumetric testing, specifically asphalt content and Voids in the Total Mix (VTM) at the design compaction effort, Ndesign, revealed that the 40% RAP mix incorporated a significantly higher level of binder during plant production which very likely contributed to the decrease in rutting resistance once additional binder was added in the laboratory. Additionally, the gyratory compaction effort that would result in 4 percent VTM at the optimal binder content over the three performance tests, N4%, was calculated for each mix. Results indicated that the VTM for the optimally performing 20% and 40% RAP mixes were well below current Virginia Department of transportation (VDOT) production standards. In addition, N4%, for the optimally performing 20% and 40% RAP mixes was 50% or less than the current design compaction effort of 65 gyrations. / Master of Science

Multiplicity of Experiences

Shagul Hameed, Kamar Shafeeha 24 June 2024 (has links)
In the bustling heart of Chicago's LaSalle Street, the 111 West Monroe site presents a unique narrative of adaptive reuse, encapsulating the thesis of 'Multiplicity of Experiences.' This thesis ventures beyond the conventional restoration, aspiring to reinvigorate and repurpose two distinct architectural forms — a robust brick structure and its transparent steel and glass counterpart — through strategic cuts that foster gathering and community interaction. The manipulation of light at varying intensities becomes the silent choreographer of space, delineating zones of activity and orchestrating the human experience within these revitalized edifices. The old brick building, a testament to historical solidity, now breathes anew as student housing, offering challenges turned opportunities through its dense facade and muted interiors. In contrast, the steel and glass structure, with its morning light and open vistas, evolves into a sanctuary for families, children, and the elderly, promoting a sense of openness and interconnectivity. This architectural duality harmonizes to form a living, dynamic tableau that captures the multiplicity of human experiences, enabled by horizontal and vertical incisions that carve out communal and private spheres. The groundwork of the thesis is the concept of gathering — initiating with the public's allure into the retail and amenity spaces on the lower levels, ascending to the private residences above, and culminating in the shared terraces that bridge different age groups and backgrounds. This thesis demonstrates how spatial intervention, particularly through the nuanced application of light and the deliberate choreography of openings, can script diverse experiences from serendipitous encounters to orchestrated communal activities. It presents a model of adaptive reuse that not only conserves the structural essence but also injects a new pulse into the urban fabric, championing a symbiosis between the old and the new, the individual and the collective, the built and the unbuilt. Through the transformative act of cutting and layering, this study sheds light on the potency of architectural intervention in shaping human and spatial experiences. The result is a rich mosaic of life, where every stratum, every incision, every ray of light adds a verse to the narrative of gathering, from dawn's first light to the tranquil hum of evening, offering a blueprint for reactivating spaces that reach beyond their walls to touch the human soul. / Master of Architecture / This thesis explores adaptive reuse at 111 West Monroe, using architectural cuts to manipulate light and space, thereby creating a multiplicity of experiences that foster community interaction and rejuvenate urban life across diverse generations.

Vizualizace značených buněk modelového organismu / Visualization of Marked Cells of a Model Organism

Kubíček, Radek Unknown Date (has links)
This master thesis is focused on volumetric data rendering and on highlighting and visualization of the selected cells of the model organisms. These data are captured by a confocal deconvolution microscope. Input data form one large volumetric block containing separate slices. This data block is rendered by an applicable method and then are identified and visualized the cells marked by the GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) process or by chlorophyle fluorescency. The principal aim of this work is to find out the preferably optimal effective method enabling this highlighting, most preferably working without a manual check. Due to the data structure, this ambition seems hardly realizable, so it suffices to find out a manual working method. The last step is to embed the results of this work into FluorCam application, the confocal deconvolution microscope data visualizer.

A Finite Element Model for Mixed Porohyperelasticity with Transport, Swelling, and Growth

Armstrong, Michelle Hine, Buganza Tepole, Adrián, Kuhl, Ellen, Simon, Bruce R., Vande Geest, Jonathan P. 14 April 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this manuscript is to establish a unified theory of porohyperelasticity with transport and growth and to demonstrate the capability of this theory using a finite element model developed in MATLAB. We combine the theories of volumetric growth and mixed porohyperelasticity with transport and swelling (MPHETS) to derive a new method that models growth of biological soft tissues. The conservation equations and constitutive equations are developed for both solid-only growth and solid/fluid growth. An axisymmetric finite element framework is introduced for the new theory of growing MPHETS (GMPHETS). To illustrate the capabilities of this model, several example finite element test problems are considered using model geometry and material parameters based on experimental data from a porcine coronary artery. Multiple growth laws are considered, including time-driven, concentrationdriven, and stress-driven growth. Time-driven growth is compared against an exact analytical solution to validate the model. For concentration-dependent growth, changing the diffusivity (representing a change in drug) fundamentally changes growth behavior. We further demonstrate that for stress-dependent, solid-only growth of an artery, growth of an MPHETS model results in a more uniform hoop stress than growth in a hyperelastic model for the same amount of growth time using the same growth law. This may have implications in the context of developing residual stresses in soft tissues under intraluminal pressure. To our knowledge, this manuscript provides the first full description of an MPHETS model with growth. The developed computational framework can be used in concert with novel in-vitro and in-vivo experimental approaches to identify the governing growth laws for various soft tissues.

Análise quantitativa e qualitativa do crescimento de caixeta - Tabebuia cassinoides (LAM.) DC. / Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the growth caixeta – tabebuia cassinoides (lam.) dc. – in forest handeled in the municipal district of Iguape/SP.

Bernhardt, Ricardo 22 October 2003 (has links)
A caixeta - Tabebuia cassinoides (LAM.) DC. / Caixeta - Tabebuia cassinoides (LAM.) DC. - is a tree species of swamp forests in the Atlantic Rain Forest. It has been used since the 30’s, mainly for clog and pencil production. IBAMA Decree no. 218 prohibited Caixeta’s explotation in 1989. By its importance for the community and social movement, caixeta’s management was regulated by the Resolution 11/92 by the Environmental Secretary of São Paulo State. This Resolution regulates caixeta management by auto-sustained regime. The cutting cycle was defined as 12 years, but isn’t based on technical and scientific data. Information about growth and yield are rare for Tropical Rain Forest. This information is essential to verify technical, environmental and economic sustainability of the forest management. Thus, check the proposed cutting cycle is fundamental to certify the sustainability of caixeta management. After harvest caixeta sprouts vigorously, so one the most important silvicultural practice is sprout thinning. Resolution ES 11/92, establishes that must be left 1 to 3 sprouts per stump. Objectifying to verify growth and stem quality of the sprouts was established an experimental area composed by 224 stumps. By the Forest Inventory measurement of Retiro Farm (50 samples 10 x 20 m) and Cindumel Farm (46 samples 10 x 20 m), was observed Mean Annual Increment for volume of 3,215 ± 0,366 m 3 /ha/year and 5,557 ± 0,598 m 3 /ha/year, respectively. The harvest intensity was over 50% of the amount harvestable wood; the intensity was higher near the extraction routes, reaching 94%. Thus caused a reduction of 54% in MAI, where the harvest intensity was higher than 75%. The estimated harvest cycle for managed caixetais has Confident Interval from 12,9 to 17,6 years. The measurement of thinning sprout experiment, 8 years after logging, indicates that treatments that have 1 and 2 sprouts are statistically equal, and have mean DBH of 8,95 cm and 8,37 cm, respectively. While the treatments that have 3 and all sprouts have mean DBH of 7,30 cm and 5,37 cm, respectively, for the same period. Sprout thinning improves stem quality, increasing the height of first fork and reducing stem sinuosity, when compared with sprouts without thinning. The research results pointed to the need of Resolution 11 review, searching for the sustainability of caixeta management. The points that must be reviewed, are: (i) establishment of a limit of harvest intensity lesser than 75%, nearby the extraction routes; (ii) the number of the sprouts per stump must be 1 or 2, and; (iii) the harvest cycle of 12 years is underestimated.

Avaliação volumétrica da fenda alveolar por meio de tomografia computadorizada por feixe cônico (TCFC) em pacientes com fissura labiopalatina / Volumetric assessement of the alveolar cleft using Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) in patients with cleft lip and palate

Rocha, Marcos Antonio de Souza 16 May 2012 (has links)
Rehabilitation of patients with cleft lip and palate has evolved significantly in recent decades, due to development of the alveolar bone graft procedures. It is a procedure that requires strict attention to detail, and for this reason imaging exams are of great help. Computerized Tomography has enriched the diagnostic methods, arousing interest in studies of this method of examination in the therapeutic treatment of cleft lip and palate. This study aims to develop a methodology to assess the volume of the alveolar cleft, using Cone Beam Computerized Tomography. The 32-bit OsiriX® DICOM Viewer (Apple, Inc., version 3.7.1) open source softtware, a public domain program which can be downloaded for free from the Internet, was used. This software enables the visualization and manipulation of Computerized Tomography files as long as they are saved in the DICOM format, offering possibilities both for making linear measurements and also for calculating area and volume, always in real proportions (1:1). The sample was composed of tomographic images of 30 patients: 24 with unilateral and 6 with bilateral cleft , with average age of 9 years and 9 months, 19 male and 11 female. After importing the files, 2 examiners used tools from the OsiriXTM software, at different times, to measure the volume of the alveolar cleft lip and palate along the axial cuts, which was delimited using demarcation points and predetermined limits. Statistical analysis was performed using Cronbachs Alpha test, which demonstrated the high degree of reproducibility and reliability of the proposed method (p<0,001). The mean volume found was 0.92 ± 0.31 cm3 and, in relation to the type of cleft observed, the unilateral clefts presented larger volume than the bilaterals (p=0,019). There were no differences regarding gender, age range, and side of the cleft. It was concluded that the OsiriXTM software is efficient for measuring the volume of alveolar cleft; that the proposed method can be reproduced; and, that the mean volume of the alveolar unilateral cleft is greater than bilateral clefts.

Avaliação volumétrica de defeitos ósseos em fissuras de rebordo alveolar e palato duro por meio da 3D-TC multislice e feixe cônico / Volumetric assessment of hard palate and alveolar cleft using multislice and cone beam 3DCT

Albuquerque, Marco Antonio Portela 11 November 2010 (has links)
Oral clefts are one of the most frequent malformations of the human body, causing extensive facial bone deformities, compromising biological, psychic and social the individuals affected. Multislice CT and CBCT have been used to assess the volume of bone defect with the goal of diagnosis and rehabilitative therapy planning of the patients. The aim of this study were to develop a methodology for post-processing of tomographic images for volumetric assessment of bone defects made in the hard palate and alveolar ridge of dry skulls, mimicking unilateral trans-foramen clefts; and to determine the clinical applicability of multislice spiral computed tomography, and cone beam computed tomography in the analysis of these defects. Nine dry skulls from the Cathedral College in Boa Vista-RR were scanned on a multislice CT scanner at the Hospital Geral de Roraima and a cone beam computed tomography in a private clinic in Fortaleza-CE. The images were sent for analysis at Three Dimensional Laboratory (LAD-3D) of the Dentistry School, São Paulo University, using an independent workstation and implementing specific computer graphics programs. All images were analyzed by two examiners at different times and twice to proceed the intra and inter-examiners analysis. For analysis the methodology of image processing, we compared the results obtained by multislice CT using skulls with and without wax model in the region of bone defect. It was also analyzed the same images in both types of CT scanners in order to determine the applicability of these radiographic techniques in assessing volume of the clefts and to compare the results. All results were compared with the gold standard of our analysis, which was obtained by Archimedes principle of water displacement of wax models. The statistical results showed that the post processing methodology of tomographic images showed a high efficiency (p = 0.995) and was considered an efficient method for volumetric assessment of fissure bone defects. It was also observed that both multislice CT and cone beam CT showed excellent results with high reliability in the study of the volume of bone defects (p = 0.997 and p = 0.981, respectively), with no difference in performance between them. Analysis of intra-and inter-observer in the two types of CT scanners showed no statistically significant difference. The results demonstrate that independent of the type of CT scanner and the appraiser, the measurements are statistically equal to the gold standard obtained by our analysis. The clinical applicability of our research has shown to be immediate and direct, and it is important for the diagnostic and therapeutic process of patients with oral cleft.

Medeiros, Paulo César Alves de Oliveira 30 January 2018 (has links)
The work aimed to make the horizontal structure characterization through the importance value index (IVI) and specific objectives to determine the volume of ten wood species with larger field in a Cerrado sensu stricto fragment in the municipality Gurupi-TO, through the use of volumetric and equation of the form factor. The data was from standing trees relative space and their volumes obtained by the Hohenadl equation (10 sections). 323 diameters were collected trees-samples in 5 diamétricas classes, with intervals of 2 cm. 10 volumetric models were selected, these being called: Ogaya, Stoate, Raj et al. (2006), Scolforo and Silva (1993), Meyer, Spurr (Logarithm) Kopezky-Gehrhardt, Hohenadl-Krenn, Brennac and Schumacher-Hall, for the adjustment of the data. For evaluating statistical criteria adopted: R ² aj, Syx, in addition to the graphical analysis of the distribution of waste. For the 10 species obtained an average productivity in terms of basal area of 7.05 m ² ha-1 and volumes estimated by equation and by form factor, 25.25 values m3 ha-1 and 26.87 m3 ha-1, respectively. The average form factor was 0.67 for the 10 species evaluated. It is concluded that form factor can be used for the volume estimates in areas where a dominance of species or groups of species with similar characteristics to this study, especially in areas of Cerrado sensu stricto as an alternative the volumetric and equations that model of Meyer presented the best performance for volume estimation in 10 species in an area of Cerrado sensu stricto.
