Chemo-dynamics of newly discovered metal-poor stars and improved spectroscopic tools

Kielty, Collin Louis 07 January 2021 (has links)
This dissertation presents two chemo-dynamical analyses of metal-poor stars found within the Milky Way. 115 metal-poor candidate stars, including 28 confirmed very metal-poor stars, selected from the narrow-band Pristine photometric survey are presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDOnS spectroscopy. An additional 30 confirmed very metal-poor stars selected from Pristine are examined based on Gemini/GRACES spectroscopy. Chemical abundances are determined for a total of 19 elements (Li, Na, Mg, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Nd, Eu) across these studies, which are combined with Gaia DR2 parallaxes and proper motions to paint a chemically diverse map of ancient stars in the Galaxy. Abundance patterns similar to those seen in "normal" metal-poor Galactic halo stars are found in a majority of the stars studied here, however new discoveries of a handful of chemically unique and kinematically intriguing metal-poor stars are presented. The chemo-dynamics of these novel stellar relics point towards chemical signatures of unique and potentially unstudied stellar yields, in addition to stars with origins in accreted dwarf galaxies and the ancient progenitors of the proto-Milky Way. The success of these relatively small studies heralds the great contributions to Galactic archaeology expected from the next generation of large multi-object spectroscopic surveys. Contained within are two other projects that introduce data products related to Gemini Observatory instruments. A version of the convolutional neural network StarNet, tuned to medium-resolution R~6000 H-band spectra is presented. This model was trained on synthetic stellar spectra containing a range of data augmentation steps to more accurately reflect the observed spectra expected from medium-resolution instruments, like the Gemini-North Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) or GIRMOS. In an era when spectroscopic surveys are capable of collecting spectra for hundreds of thousands of stars, fast and efficient analysis methods are required to maximize scientific impact, and StarNet delivers on these expectations over a range of spectral resolutions. Finally, a python package called Nifty4Gemini, and its associated Pyraf/Python based pipeline for processing NIFS observations is included. Nifty4Gemini reduces NIFS raw data and produces a flux and wavelength calibrated science cube with the full signal-to-noise, ready for science analysis. / Graduate

En skomakares resa : En kvalitativ studie om västerländsk esoterism och väg-metaforen i Jacob Böhmes The Way to Christ / A Cobblers Journey : A qualitative study on western esotericism and Way-metaphor in Jacob Boehmes The Way to Christ

Thornfält, Alexander January 2021 (has links)

Mnohosměrový podvozek / Multi-Way robotic wheelframe

Krsek, Jiří January 2011 (has links)
The master's thesis deals with a theoretical analysis of properties of a multi-way wheelframe and a selection of an appropriate method for the human operator control. Based on the analysis will be designed hardware and software of the control unit for controlling the movement of the robot's multi-way wheelframe. The electronic system will ensure a real-time processing the operator's instructions to control signals for the motors that will drive and implement the required angles of two driven wheels of the chassis. The proposal also reflects a sufficient equipment with input-output channels for any subsequent extension of additional sensors for testing the autonomous robot operation.

Běloušková, Kristina January 2015 (has links)
The diploma thesis titled Interpretation of traffic accident analysis results in relation to related legal decision deals with the interpretation of legal decisions accidents with not giving right of way. The main goal of this thesis is to find an established line for assessing culpability for comparable accident situations. Before the analysis of the 230 court rulings measurement is performed to estimate the distance an speed, because it is closely connected with right of way. In the context of theoretical part is characterized by a right of way, an expert in criminal proceedings, the road traffic regulations, penalties and the factors that influence us while driving. The analytical part draws on 230 court rulings and 5 expert opinions provided by the Institute of Forensic Engineering of the Technical University in Brno. Conclusion of the analytical part an established threshold for assessing culpability for comparable accident situations is found.

The orientation of achievement : can goal orientation be used to predict academic achievement in a multicultural environment?

Pietersen, Maxine Wendy January 2016 (has links)
Research has shown that goal orientation has a direct relationship with academic achievement for students. This relationship varies for South African students from different backgrounds. This mini dissertation investigated the relationship between academic achievement and goal orientation but moreover explored the mediating variables at play in this relationship. A quantitative correlational research study was employed with a sample size of 545 South African students ranging in age from 18 to 48 with a mean of 20.77 (SD = 2.94). Students completed an online survey, through Qualtrics. T tests yielded results suggesting that there was a significant difference (p = <.05) in the performance avoidance scores for historically advantaged students (M = 7.24, SD = 2.03) and historically disadvantaged students (M= 7.83, SD = 2.15), suggesting that historically disadvantaged students are more performance avoidant compared to historical advantaged students. Two way between groups ANOVA showed that the historical advantaged students (M = 65.39, SD= 14.30) scored higher academically compared to the historical disadvantaged students (M=54.42, SD=15.17). Structural equation modelling (SEM) produced results showing that Goal achievement (GAQ) related positively, with a large direct, significance effect with Culture (R^2=0.0, ᵝ = 0.71, C.R.= 4.91, p<.001), proposing that students who are individualistic (or traditional) perform better academically. / Mini Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Psychology / MA / Unrestricted

Fenomén chůze / Phenomenon of walking

Hlaváčková, Jitka January 2017 (has links)
The thesis is focused on the phenomenon of walking and it's influence on the human perception of the environment. Walking is conceived here as a sustainable way of life and is discussed in three different dimensions: social, environmental and spiritual. It therefore maps the meaning of walking in the human life and it's impact on the environmental concern. The social, environmental and spiritual dimension of walking is presented in the theoretical part of the thesis. There is an analysis of the influence of walking on human health, formation and evolution of hiking trails and ways of the human life within them. In addition, it also deals with the concept of the perception of the nature and the human relation to it. The empirical part of the thesis introduces quantitative research of the pedestrians environmental concern which was carried out in the form of a questionnaire survey. The data from this research is then compared with the data from a representative sample of the population of the Czech Republic obtained in the framework of ISSP Environment III research. Key words: walking, sustainable way of life, perception of nature, environmental concern

Kriminalistický experiment / Criminalistic Experiment

Mottlová, Šárka January 2020 (has links)
Criminalistic experiment Abstract The diploma thesis "Criminalistic experiment" deals with the analysis of selected methods of criminalistic practice in the Czech legal branch and Czech criminalistic practice. It contains two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is based on an analysis of the available literature. It focuses on the conceptual methods of the "criminalistic experiment" performed by experts, describes the different methods from other special methods of proof and specifies the various stages of the experiment. The first chapter defines the term criminalistic experiment as the use of experimental methods in criminalistics. Furthermore, the subchapters describe the various types of criminalistic experiment, from the informal tactical experiment, through the actions of a forensic expert called a professional experiment, to the actions of forensic experts called an investigative experiment. The first chapter also deals with a special form of investigative experiment, where the experiment is performed directly by a judge, the so-called judicial experiment. The second chapter of the diploma thesis tries to define the fundamental differences between the investigative experiment and other special methods of proof such as confrontation, recognition, reconstruction and on-site...
