A Performer's Analysis of Dominick Argento's Miss Havisham's Wedding Night

Mott, Jammieca D. 05 1900 (has links)
Dominick Argento's Miss Havisham's Wedding Night is the least explored of his artistic output. A monodrama in one act for soprano, Miss Havisham's Wedding Night contains some of Argento's most beautiful and challenging music of his compositional output. The purpose of a detailed analysis of the structure and content of Argento's Miss Havisham's Wedding Night is to facilitate the solo vocal performer's interpretation. Argento's setting of Miss Havisham's Wedding Night is unique in that he musically translates the manic psychological state of the literary character. Argento structured the one act opera in such a manner that the music would illuminate the text and the audience might connect with the unstable psychological episodes and outbursts demonstrated by Miss Havisham. To that end, each section and phrase has its own psychological motivation, which in turn demands a varied musical and dramatic interpretation. Utilizing selected scenes from Miss Havisham's Wedding Night, the researcher will analyze Argento's musical manifestation of Dickens's literary work. This research will include an investigation into the manner in which Argento uses the shape of melody and the musical phrase along with the harmonic materials to enhance the text and dramatic content. The author will explore the musical nuances Argento incorporates in an effort to develop and portray Miss Havisham's psychological state. Through an analysis of the orchestral writing the author will show how Argento's aesthetic balance between the music and text represents the emotional and psychological implications of the monodrama.

The eco-bride : development of an environmentally-friendly bridal collection for a South African market

Schultz, Wendy Lynn 17 October 2013 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Technology: Fashion, Durban University of Technology, 2013. / The Eco-Bride study is a practical product development research project in the fields of fashion, textiles, and sustainability. Currently it is considered fashionable to host an "eco-friendly" wedding, both because people are becoming more environmentally conscious with the prospect of global warming and also because the fashion industry, too, is attempting to reduce its impact on the environment. However, in spite of a growing trend in "eco-weddings", the bridal gown remains a conventional garment with a heavy carbon footprint. The intention of this study was thus to develop and produce a range of environmentally-friendly bridal gowns in order to create alignment between trendy eco-weddings and the bridal gowns worn to these functions. this was considered to fill a gap in the local market and to work toward educating both brides and industry as to a product offering which is less harmful to the environment. To this end, mixed methods action research was carried out within a constructivist worldview, firstly, to explore what might be construed as an environmentally-friendly bridal gown and secondly, to establish what would appeal to South African brides. The concepts of eco-friendly design models, sustainable fashion, celebrity and product fetish, customer behaviour and product development strategies were investigated in order to conceptualise, design and produce a collection of ten Eco-Bride-branded gowns for the South African market. It was hoped that the development of an environmentally-friendly bridal collection might assist in opening up the market to eco-fashion bridal wear. Further products of the research included instructional videos of the eco-friendly design-make process, which were intended to create awareness of the various eco-options in both the textile industry and bridal fashion market.

A practise-based action research self-study : "how do I improve my practice as a bridal-gown designer in a highly-competitive market?"

Walters, Casey Jeannne January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in partial fulfillment for Masters in Fashion, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / In my practise-based action research self-study I have developed ways in which to improve my practice as a bridal-gown designer in a highly-competitive and import-driven bridal-gown market. My earnest intent was to improve my practice using action research methods whilst simultaneously developing a solution through critical reflection and practice-based approaches as an economically-sustainable designer of bespoke, cost-effective, competitively-priced bridal gowns. I realised the potential for professional influence and positive economic growth through entrepreneurial thinking, not only for me but for others; it was this which cemented a sense of values in me as an action researcher. I have displayed a healthy marriage between equally important views of practice as theory and the theory as practice. I explored relevant literature that would validate my practice and aid in answering my critical questions, which became evident as validation chapters in my study. Carrying out internships with three bridal gown designers opened my eyes to the real world of business, a sense of theory as practice, where I could see, first-hand, the effects the import industry had on local designers and what they were doing to survive. The conceptualisation of foundational bridal blocks was a solution to save time in my own creative process so that I could produce cost-effective bridal gowns at a competitive price, in a sustainable manner. Once I had explored and created my own interpretation of the foundation block concept that transformed into a small collection of bridal gowns, I used the foundation blocks as a starting point to design bridal gowns for ‘real’ bridal clients. My study is personal in nature; by way of using self-study methods and also the personal ‘one-on-one’ connection I have with my ‘real’ bridal clients. I extended this ‘personal factor’ by holding a public exhibition to which I invited my friends, family, the public and my peers to view and give critical feedback on my work as a bridal gown designer. / M

Shaoxing hun qing yi shi zhong de tong guan yue

January 2013 (has links)
Red lanterns, elaborate bridal sedan, traditional Chinese wind and percussion (chuida 吹打) ensembles, once characterized conventional Shaoxing weddings in the early 20th century. No matter how simple the wedding was, chuida music was a very essential part, which decorated an atmosphere of lively joyance. Since the late 1920s, a newly established western brass band named Xinsheng (New Sound) brought into this county a strikingly different sound, as well as musical practices. In smart military uniform, this band of six, performing a mixed repertoire of Western and Chinese pieces, soon became popular in the weddings of the more affluent class. / As a convenient symbol of Western taste and fashion, this new band positioned itself well by its name "New Sound," an image its members initially wanted to project. However, almost ninety years after its establishment, I have found in my fieldwork that traditional Chinese concepts and practices remalll strong in the brass band's performances and activities. These unique features of border and genre crossing are also the reason why, over the course of a century, the number of brass bands in Shaoxing has increased significantly, and has become an indispensable component of present day weddings. / However, there are some interesting and important questions I want to ask in this thesis: why was the brass band brought into Shaoxing and chosen for the wedding ceremony? How did the band and its repertoire adapt to the Chinese traditional ritual context and appeal to local tastes and aesthetics? What does the brass band's negotiation between Western practices and local culture reveal? In order to answer these questions, this thesis first tracks the band's history and transmission. Then after a chapter of wedding ethnography and a chapter of oral history on traditional wedding, it looks into the function of brass bands and their musIc at weddings, and explores the cultural, historical and political meanings behind them. This paper examines the ways in which musical concepts of local people influence the Western brass bands, performers and the brass music itself. / The paper holds that although the rituals, performers, musical instruments and musical language continued to change throughout during years, the local cultural traditions and people's concepts are still maintained III the Western musical practices. The brass bands chosen by history are also creating and reconstructing the history and tradition. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 鄭思. / "2013年1月". / "2013 nian 1 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-85). / Electronic reproduction. The Role of the Home in Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding and the Optimist's Daughter

Crews, Claire Elizabeth 05 May 2012 (has links)
Eudora Welty’s sense of place is often discussed by scholars, but they have limited their discussions of place in Welty’s texts to place as region or, more specifically, the South. In so doing, Welty is often pigeonholed as a regionalist writer. Looking at the home when considering place makes Welty’s texts more universal and appealing to readers of all regions and countries. Every individual either has a home or longs for one; all understand the pull toward a home of some kind. Using the theoretical lens of social and psychological theories of space, place, and the home, this study presents a close reading of the homes in Eudora Welty’s Delta Wedding and The Optimist’s Daughter. In addition, archival research from the Eudora Welty collection at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History aids in understanding how drafting the stories and the ways in which the stories evolved add to a reading of home in the texts. In her famous essay “Place in Fiction,” Welty asks, “What place has place in fiction?” (781). In analyzing the role of the home in Welty’s fiction, the reader must ask: What place has the home in fiction? Analyzing the homes in Delta Wedding and The Optimist’s Daughter reveals the characters’ identities – both individual and collective identities, and in so doing, it allows the reader to better understand the motives behind the characters’ actions and reactions.
