The perceptions of employee wellness programme practitioners concerning HIV and AIDS workplace stigma in the Gauteng Provincial Government

Thavhanyedza, Tshilidzi Alfred 19 April 2010 (has links)
HIV and AIDS stigma has become a vital challenge for all stakeholders in the workplace. Although government has developed policies on managing HIV and AIDS, indications are that the implementation of these policies and strategies has not been effective in mitigating HIV and AIDS workplace stigma. The key thrust for conducting this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of Employee Wellness Practitioners concerning HIV and AIDS stigma in the Gauteng Provincial Government [GPG] departments. The study was geared towards ascertaining empirically the Employee Wellness Programme [EWP] practitioners’ perceptions regarding the manifestation of HIV and AIDS stigma, the context of stigma in a government department, and insight into whether workplace interventions have been effective in mitigating stigma. The general orientation to the study in Chapter 1 provides an overview of the definition of the problem of stigma, and also of the goals and objectives of the study, the research question, empirical approach, research design and methodologies used, pilot testing of data collection instrument, research population, sampling methods, ethical considerations and the structure of the study report. Fourteen EWP practitioners from the 13 GPG departments were interviewed by the researcher. The literature review in Chapter 2 theoretically scrutinises the problem of HIV and AIDS stigma with specific reference to the types, forms sources, causes and consequences of stigma. The conjectural context of HIV and AIDS stigma in the workplace is expounded and workplace interventions are explored. Chapter 3 of this study presents and analyses the data collected from the respondents. Findings indicate that HIV and AIDS stigma is widespread in the GPG departments and that workplace responses as per EWP practitioners’ perceptions are diverse. HIV and AIDS stigma mitigation strategies necessitate the use of multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches which should be tailored to address the challenges and needs of relevant stakeholders. From the results of this study it is apparent that HIV and AIDS stigma has an immense impact on the performance of government employees, and that current HIV and Employee Wellness policies are not sufficient to enhance stigma mitigation in the workplace. Lack of support, commitment and visionary leadership in government departments impede the hard EWP practitioners’ efforts to de-stigmatise HIV and AIDS in the GPG. Chapter 4 presents the conclusions and recommendations for prioritisation and implementation through workplace interventions. Approaches to Improve the Structure and Function of the Skeleton in Chronic Kidney Disease

Swallow, Elizabeth Anne 03 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Chronic kidney disease (CKD) currently affects ~37 million Americans and causes substantially increased risk of skeletal fracture and fracture-related mortality. Current methods to treat CKD-related bone loss remain alarmingly ineffective. Skeletal fragility in CKD is predominately driven by deteriorations in cortical bone, highlighted by significant cortical porosity development. It is hypothesized that cortical porosity is largely driven by chronically high levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which alters the balance of bone remodeling in favor of rampant osteoclast activity and bone resorption. Restricting cortical bone deterioration and the development of cortical pores is likely essential to improve CKD patients’ bone health and reduce their fracture risk. The goal of this series of studies was to answer the following key questions: (1) to what degree do bisphosphonates, an approved pharmacological agent used in metabolic bone disease, accumulate in the skeleton of animals with CKD; (2) can smaller and more frequent doses of bisphosphonates alter skeletal accumulation and improve cortical architecture and the mechanical integrity of bone; (3) can non-bisphosphonate pharmacological interventions more specifically affect cortical bone deterioration. Utilizing epi-fluorescence and two-photon microscopy, our results show that bisphosphonates accumulate more in rats with renal impairment and fractionating bisphosphonates lowered skeletal accumulation irrespective of disease state. Further, studies in both rat and mouse models of CKD demonstrated different bisphosphonate treatments alone do not recover declines in cortical microarchitecture or mechanical properties in CKD. These findings demonstrate that a single intervention is not sufficient in managing CKD-induced bone alterations. Utilizing individual pore tracking analysis, we demonstrated cortical pores can be modulated with therapeutic interventions and can infill, despite the presence of CKD. Potent suppression of PTH led to significant pore infilling while more subtle reductions in PTH, via a calcimimetic, had less striking effects on bone. Calcimimetics mitigated cortical microarchitecture deterioration and reduced the rate of cortical pore expansion. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of PTH management for treating cortical deterioration in CKD. Although bisphosphonates can be utilized in ways that reduce skeletal accumulation, they appear to need co-therapies to reduce skeletal fragility associated with CKD.

The development and evaluation of a wellness promotion programme for students with disabilities at institutions of higher learning with special reference to the University of Limpopo (Turfloop campus)

Mogane, Makololo Perpetua January 2010 (has links)
A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN PSYCHOLOGY IN THE FACULTY OF ARTS at the UNIVERSITY OF ZULULAND, 2010. / The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a Wellness Promotion Programme on the “overall development of a group of students with disabilities at the University of Limpopo.” The literature research that was conducted led to the following conclusions:  students with disabilities at tertiary institutions experience a variety of problems, including physical, psychological and socio-cultural ones.  the problems that students with disabilities experience can be addressed in a systematic and programmatic manner to enable these students to be more effective and successful in their studies and their lives. This is really the raison d’être of this study. Two groups of students with disabilities at the University of Limpopo were used in this study, namely, the treatment and control groups. The purposive sampling technique was used to select the groups. A combination of Pre-test- Post-test and Post-test only, group design was used in the study. Both the treatment and control groups did the pre-test and post-test. The treatment group participated in a three-month Wellness Promotion Programme which served as the treatment. Changes in the developmental level of the two groups were measured by means of the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA), the Life Skills and Competencies: General Questionnaire on Life Competencies and Skills (GQLCS) and the Self-Directed Search Questionnaire(SDSQ). Two versions of the t-test, one for correlated data and the other for uncorrelated data were used in the processing and analysis of the data. The treatment group, unlike the control group, made significant pre- to post-test gains on all the three tests used in this study. The findings, therefore, led the researcher to conclude that the Wellness Promotion Programme that was presented to the treatment group enhanced the overall development of the students who were exposed to it. It was, therefore, recommended that the programme for students with disabilities be introduced at the University of Limpopo and at other tertiary institutions in South Africa. (

Exploring sport motivation and multi-dimensional wellness in NCAA Division II student-athletes

Mayol, Mindy M. 17 November 2017 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Too few studies relating to motivation and wellness have targeted the NCAA Division II student-athlete (SA) population. PURPOSES: To examine differences in SAs’ sport motivation (SM) types over three time points as well as multi-dimensional wellness (MDW) levels in SAs during one time point. METHODS: Overall, 530 Division II SAs (nmales = 355, nfemales = 175) with an overall age range of 18 to 23 (M = 19.40, SD = 1.33) from 21 teams voluntarily completed the 18-item Self-Determination Theory-based SM Scale II used to measure six motivation types, the 45-item MDW Inventory used to measure nine wellness dimensions, and a demographics questionnaire. Repeated measures Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) and 2x2x3 Mixed ANOVAs were used to analyze SM types while a multivariate ANOVA was used to analyze MDW with an alpha level of 0.05 set for statistical significance. RESULTS: Analyses demonstrated statistically significant differences in SM types over time (p = .05), interactions and differences in SM types between interactive/coactive and male/female SAs (p = .05), and interactions and differences in MDW levels between male/female SAs and SAs who completed/did not complete a college wellness course (p = .05). CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggested that autonomous-based SM types decreased over time whereas amotivation increased over time indicating possible athlete burnout. Interactive and female SAs showed similarities also representative of athlete burnout. SAs who completed the MDW course demonstrated higher physical wellness exercise scores than SAs who did not. Female SAs had higher means in five wellness dimensions when compared to male SAs. SAs who completed the course showed higher means for seven wellness dimensions versus SAs who did not. Further research should ensue to better understand motivation and wellness on a national scale examining Division I, II and III and NAIA athletes in order to provide more generalizable results.
