Investigating the practical performance of the LoRaWAN technologySkog Andersen, Jonas, Eriksson, Joakim January 2017 (has links)
New innovations, technologies, ideas and businesses are driving the realisation of the Internet of Things (IoT) vision. As with many other fields in technology comes competing protocols and standards, ranging from modulation schema used for transmitting data to security standards used to ensure safe operation and the privacy needs for all involved entities. This thesis looks into one of the competing modulation schema and network protocols for IoT applications: the LoRaWAN protocol. The main contribution of this thesis is a datadriven empirical study that helps verify theoretically obtained results from other authors. Our results also suggest that as long as other signals on the same frequency band uses different modulation techniques (or just other parameters for the same modulation technique), then only the signal to noise ratio is affected without introducing collisions. This affects the scalability and overall practical distance covered by a LoRaWAN. Our general conclusion is that the LoRaWAN as a technology/protocol has its disadvantages, mainly how heavily different traffic profiles may affect the scalability of it and a general lack of hard quality of service guarantees.

Comparison Study and Product Development using Wireless Narrowband Low-power Wide-area Network TechnologiesOrtis Pasamontes, Enrique January 2017 (has links)
Nowadays it is more clear that the Internet of things (IoT) is not a transient trend but a completely new industry. The internet of things has the capability to enhance current industries (Industry 4.0), as well as to help protecting the environment and people. The latter is the case with the system developed and described in this thesis. The possibilities that IoT brings are due to the interconnection of heterogeneous embedded devices to the internet. This thesis focus on LPWANs (Low Power Wide Area Networks), which is a new set of technologies specifically design for the needs of IoT devices.Due to the recent deploy of NB-IoT (Narrow Band IoT) networks it has become more difficult to know what LPWAN is best for a certain application. Thus, the first half of this thesis involves the comparative study of NB-IoT and LoRaWAN LPWANs. This comparison required an in depth study of each technology, specially on the physical and datalink layers. The comparison briefly displays the main characteristics of each technology and explain the main conclusions in a concise manner. The second part of the thesis describes the development of a GNSS tracker. This tracker will be used on train wagons carrying goods that are dangerous for people and the environment. This thesis report describes the different steps taken, from the requirement specification to the partial development of the software.

Efficient service discovery in wide area networksBrown, Alan January 2008 (has links)
Living in an increasingly networked world, with an abundant number of services available to consumers, the consumer electronics market is enjoying a boom. The average consumer in the developed world may own several networked devices such as games consoles, mobile phones, PDAs, laptops and desktops, wireless picture frames and printers to name but a few. With this growing number of networked devices comes a growing demand for services, defined here as functions requested by a client and provided by a networked node. For example, a client may wish to download and share music or pictures, find and use printer services, or lookup information (e.g. train times, cinema bookings). It is notable that a significant proportion of networked devices are now mobile. Mobile devices introduce a new dynamic to the service discovery problem, such as lower battery and processing power and more expensive bandwidth. Device owners expect to access services not only in their immediate proximity, but further afield (e.g. in their homes and offices). Solving these problems is the focus of this research. This Thesis offers two alternative approaches to service discovery in Wide Area Networks (WANs). Firstly, a unique combination of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the OSGi middleware technology is presented to provide both mobility and service discovery capability in WANs. Through experimentation, this technique is shown to be successful where the number of operating domains is small, but it does not scale well. To address the issue of scalability, this Thesis proposes the use of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) service overlays as a medium for service discovery in WANs. To confirm that P2P overlays can in fact support service discovery, a technique to utilise the Distributed Hash Table (DHT) functionality of distributed systems is used to store and retrieve service advertisements. Through simulation, this is shown to be both a scalable and a flexible service discovery technique. However, the problems associated with P2P networks with respect to efficiency are well documented. In a novel approach to reduce messaging costs in P2P networks, multi-destination multicast is used. Two well known P2P overlays are extended using the Explicit Multi-Unicast (XCAST) protocol. The resulting analysis of this extension provides a strong argument for multiple P2P maintenance algorithms co-existing in a single P2P overlay to provide adaptable performance. A novel multi-tier P2P overlay system is presented, which is tailored for service rich mobile devices and which provides an efficient platform for service discovery.

The original design of Internet did not take into consideration security aspects of the
network; the priority was to facilitate the process of communication. Therefore, many of the
protocols that are part of the Internet infrastructure expose a set of vulnerabilities that can
be exploited by attackers to carry out a set of attacks. Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS)
represents a big threat and one of the most devastating and destructive attacks plaguing
network operators and Internet service providers (ISPs) in a stealthy way.
Software defined networks (SDN), an emerging technology, promise to solve the limitations
of the conventional network architecture by decoupling the control plane from the data
plane. On one hand, the separation of the control plane from the data plane allows for more
control over the network and brings new capabilities to deal with DDoS attacks. On the
other hand, this separation introduces new challenges regarding the security of the control
plane.
This thesis aims to deal with various types of attacks including DDoS attacks while
protecting the resources of the control plane. In this thesis, we contribute to the mitigation
of both intra-domain and inter-domain DDoS attacks, and to the reinforcement of security
aspects in SDN.

[en] MACHINE LEARNING-BASED MAC PROTOCOLS FOR LORA IOT NETWORKS / [pt] PROTOCOLOS MAC BASEADOS EM APRENDIZADO DE MÁQUINA PARA REDES DE INTERNET DAS COISAS DO TIPO LORADAYRENE FROMETA FONSECA 24 June 2020 (has links)
[en] With the massive growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), novel wireless communication technologies have emerged to address the long-range, lowcost, and low-power consumption requirements of the IoT applications. In this context, the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) have appeared, offering different solutions that meet the IoT applications requirements mentioned before. Among the existing LPWAN solutions, LoRaWAN has stood out for receiving significant attention from both industry and academia in recent years. Although LoRaWAN offers a compelling combination of long-range and low-power consumption data transmissions, it still faces several challenges in terms of reliability and scalability. However, due to its open-source nature and the flexibility of the modulation scheme it is based on (Long Range (LoRa) modulation allows the adjustment of spreading factors and transmit power), LoRaWAN also offers important possibilities for improvements. This thesis takes advantage of the appropriateness of
the Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms for solving decision-making tasks, and use them to dynamically adjust the transmission parameters of LoRaWAN end devices. The proposed system, called RL-LoRa, shows significant improvements in terms of reliability and scalability when compared with LoRaWAN. Specifically, it decreases the average Packet Error Ratio (PER) of LoRaWAN by 15 percent, which can further increase the network scalability.

Development of a continuous condition monitoring system based on probabilistic modelling of partial discharge data for polymeric insulation cablesAhmed, Zeeshan 09 August 2019 (has links)
Partial discharge (PD) measurements have been widely accepted as an efficient online insulation condition assessment method in high voltage equipment. Two sets of experimental PD measuring setups were established with the aim to study the variations in the partial discharge characteristics over the insulation degradation in terms of the physical phenomena taking place in PD sources, up to the point of failure. Probabilistic lifetime modeling techniques based on classification, regression and multivariate time series analysis were performed for a system of PD response variables, i.e. average charge, pulse repetition rate, average charge current, and largest repetitive discharge magnitude over the data acquisition period. Experimental lifelong PD data obtained from samples subjected to accelerated degradation was used to study the dynamic trends and relationships among those aforementioned response variables. Distinguishable data clusters detected by the T-Stochastics Neighborhood Embedding (tSNE) algorithm allows for the examination of the state-of-the-art modeling techniques over PD data. The response behavior of trained models allows for distinguishing the different stages of the insulation degradation. An alternative approach utilizing a multivariate time series analysis was performed in parallel with Classification and Regression models for the purpose of forecasting PD activity (PD response variables corresponding to insulation degradation). True observed data and forecasted data mean values lie within the 95th percentile confidence interval responses for a definite horizon period, which demonstrates the soundness and accuracy of models. A life-predicting model based on the cointegrated relations between the multiple response variables, trained model responses correlated with experimentally evaluated time-to-breakdown values and well-known physical discharge mechanisms, can be used to set an emergent alarming trigger and as a step towards establishing long-term continuous monitoring of partial discharge activity. Furthermore, this dissertation also proposes an effective PD monitoring system based on wavelet and deflation compression techniques required for an optimal data acquisition as well as an algorithm for high-scale, big data reduction to minimize PD data size and account only for the useful PD information. This historically recorded useful information can thus be used for, not only postault diagnostics, but also for the purpose of improving the performance of modelling algorithms as well as for an accurate threshold detection.

[EN] Nearly 3 billion people around the world are unable to take advantage of even the most basic connectivity services, as most of them live in rural areas or developing countries. Even the simplest messaging services would be of great help, for example, to farmers who want to know the price of goods they are interested in selling or buying before deciding whether to embark on a possibly long, expensive and exhausting journey.
LoRa technology enables long-distance links with reduced power consumption at low cost, its main limitation being the low bandwidth it offers. With LoRa, remote locations, such as rural areas, can benefit from connectivity-based services that would otherwise be impossible. Our proposal falls into the category of community networks, where users build their own network when commercial infrastructure is not available. In addition to a simple messaging application, LoRa can be used to distribute sensor information to communities or to provide disaster alerts or weather data.
We present a flexible protocol based on LoRa technology that enables the transfer of "content" called LoRaCTP, which provides the necessary mechanisms for LoRa to be reliable, introducing a lightweight connection setup. We have designed this protocol also as a communication support for IoT solutions based on edge computing, given its stability, low power consumption and the possibility of covering long distances.
Likewise, we integrated an architecture that allows data collection from generic external sources. Especially audio sources, targeting two basic services: a voice messaging system that allows users who cannot read or write to make voice notes, and an audio compression service to extract the main features of the audio input and use it to develop intelligent audio analytics based on Machine Learning.
We combine IoT and Edge computing in a frugal innovation approach, to propose an "ingenious" solution, in terms of minimum resource utilization and sustainability, to build a basic support for an IoT system in rural areas. We include an MQTT proxy to integrate low-cost and low-power devices into a LoRa-based messaging system. Through a REST interface, we show how our platform can be used to distribute sensor information from rural communities. In addition, MQTT allows this data to be provided to external "data lakes" so that it can be used for tasks such as reporting, visualization, advanced analytics, and machine learning.
We describe a generic edge/fog architecture, using microservices, an MQTT-based system that can collect ingress data, manage its persistence, and coordinate data integration with the cloud using a specific service called an aggregator. The edge stations have a dedicated channel with the aggregator that is based on LoRa to enable long-range transmissions with low power consumption.
