Thesis / The objective of this study is to assess the nature of women’s empowerment promoted by the
Sudanese Women General Union (SWGU) in Sudan as a strategy for simultaneously addressing
both poverty alleviation and women's empowerment using microcredit as a tool in the fight
against poverty and women's empowerment at the household level during the period 1999-2005.
The SWGU directed its development efforts towards promoting the women's cause officially and
unofficially through the whole spectrum of governmental institutions and non-governmental
organizations. Therefore, the government support these initiatives of women development
processes and assisted in establishing the SWGU in 1990 as a strategic planning and coordination
mechanism for poverty alleviation through the lead of the Ministry of Welfare and Social
Development and with the cooperation from other ministries, government and non-government
organisations at national, state and grassroots levels.
The problem of the research reveals that majority of women in Sudan live with low or no income;
economically they are dependent on their husbands' income; burdened with their household
activities and responsibilities to feed; educate and take care of many children, encounter a core
problem which is lack of access to credit and financial services to economically, socially and
politically empower themselves and improve their status.
The study reviewed the relevant literature, the context of women's poverty in Sudan, Sudan
poverty strategies and policies, SWGU's role in strategic planning, coordination and
implementation of the microcredit programmes. The achievements of the study on the socioeconomic
empowerment of women at the household levels, the constraints and the
recommendations were summarised.
The researcher carried out this study during the period 2005-2009, to add to the body of the
empirical literature of women studies in particular to the SWGU's microcredit projects best

The study discusses selected Shona novels‟ depiction of the theme of protest in the post-independence era in Zimbabwe. The ideas that these novels generate on protest are examined in the context of socio-political and socio-cultural issues in post-independent Zimbabwe. The study is an investigation of the extent to which protest literature is indispensable in the struggle of African people to liberate themselves from imperialist servitude. Novels on socio-political protest show how the government has failed to deliver on most of its promises because of neocolonialism and corruption. Novels on socio-cultural protest show how cultural innovations in post-independence Zimbabwe brought problems .The study comes to the conclusion that for literature to be reliable and useful to society it is not enough to highlight weaknesses in criticizing, but it should go beyond that and offer constructive and corrective criticism. The persistence of female genital mutilation (FGM) and its impact on women's access to education and empowerment : a study of Kuria district, Nyanza province, KenyaOndiek, Concellia Aoko 06 1900 (has links)
The overall policy goal of education for the Kenyan Government is the provision of education and training to all Kenyans as it is fundamental to the Government’s overall development strategy. This emphasis means that every Kenyan has the right to education and training no matter his/her socio-economic status. The Government has therefore allocated substantial resources and there has been notable achievements attained, but the sector still faces major challenges related to access, equity, and quality amongst others (Session paper no. 1 2005:2). One of these major challenges to access is the existence and persistence of retrogressive traditional practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM).The first concern of this study is that despite the immense awareness of the dangers on the victims in many aspects in life, and efforts to stamp it out, FGM still persists and thrives in many parts of the country to date.
Secondly, there is an ever growing gender disparity in Kuria district, whereby women professionals are hard to come by. Even in the teaching profession which is associated with females in Kenya, there are a negligible number of Kuria female teachers.
There is therefore need to liberate these girls from the persistent “senseless genital mutilation” by proper and relevant socialization and empowerment against cultural practices.
The Cultural Lag theory of sociologist William F. Ogburn (1964) will be the underlying theoretical perspective of this study to explain the phenomenon, focusing explicitly on the / Sociology / DLITT(SOC)

Have higher education institutions mainstreamed gender to contribute towards gender equality and women empowerment? : a case study of the policies and practices of two tertiary institutions in EthiopiaYared Gettu Yehualashet 11 1900 (has links)
Several empirical studies have concluded that gender equality is a crucial ingredient for
development. Gendered higher education institutions play an important role in this
respect. The research problem that this dissertation sought to address was whether Addis
Ababa and Unity Universities have mainstreamed gender throughout their systems in
order to contribute towards gender equality and women empowerment in Ethiopia. The
research employed various data collection methodologies and processed primary and
secondary data sources using qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques.
The key finding is that gender has not been integrated into the policies and practices of
both Universities in any significant way. The study concludes that the Universities have
an inadequate institutional framework and commitment to mainstream gender.
Moreover, they lack gender analytical capacity, enforcement mechanisms for

Thesis (M.Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2012 / The research study focus on an investigation into the impact of land reform on women empowerment with reference to Masakona land restitution project at Makhado municipality, Limpopo province. South Africa land reform programme has three sub- programmes namely, Land Restitution, Land Redistribution and Land Tenure. The promotion of women economic empowerment in land restitution projects facilitates the achievement of other important public policy goals such as economic growth, improved human development and reduces poverty.
A specific focus on women in land restitution is necessary given the reality that women comprise the majority of economically disadvantaged groups. The support for women economic empowerment as part of overall development programming is important. There should be enough capacity building targeted at women to help them increase their participation in land reform programmes and projects. Land will serve as a means of creating opportunities to enable women to develop in numerous sphere of life, therefore giving them independent economic status.
The research findings in this study were done to employed females beneficiaries and the management of Masakona land restitution farms. The measurement of women empowerment were established focusing on economic empowerment, poverty alleviation, participation, decision making and capacity building at Masakona land restitution farms.
The findings of this study require the land reform programme to recognize the benefits received by women when lands are transferred to their household and community.

Previous issue date: 2016-11-16 / Cause-related marketing may offer opportunities that can contribute to women’s empowerment while having a positive impact on companies leading such programs. This paper seeks to broaden the existing understanding of women empowerment and entrepreneurship by focusing on the less-studied contemporary phenomenon of women empowerment cause-related marketing. A case study analysis was used to assess two main areas of interest: (1) elements of empowerment social-cause marketing embedded in the program, and (2) individual perceptions of empowerment by participants. The paper revealed that in the case studied (1) this recent corporate practice is a win-win situation using traditional elements of both women empowerment and cause-related marketing practices and, (2) empowers participants mainly in psychological, economic, sociocultural and familial and interpersonal dimensions of their lives. / Marketing para causas sociais pode oferecer oportunidades de contribuir ao empoderamento das mulheres ao mesmo tempo que tem um impacto positivo para empresas liderando aqueles programas. Este trabalho procura ampliar o conhecimento atual sobre o empoderamento e empreendedorismo feminino apoiando-se no recém fenômeno menos estudado de marketing para causas sociais de empoderamento feminino. Uma analise de estudo de caso procurou determinar duas áreas de interesse: (1) elementos de empoderamento e marketing para causas sociais incorporados ao programa, e (2) percepções individuais de empoderamento pelas próprias participantes. O estudou demostrou que no caso estudado (1) essa recém tendência corporativa é uma estratégia 'win-win' que usa elementos tradicionais de ambos empoderamento feminino e marketing para causas sociais; (2) empodera as participantes nas áreas psicológica, econômica, sociocultural e familiar e interpessoal das suas vidas.
