A critical ethnography of HIV-positive women attending public health care facilities in GautengDu Plessis, Gretchen Erika January 2008 (has links)
Women living with HIV have a variety of reproductive health and psychosocial needs. The purpose of this critical ethnographic study was to examine how HIV, empowerment and reproduction are experienced by a volunteer sample of HIVpositive women attending public health care facilities in Gauteng. Feminist and critical approaches were used to guide the methodology of the research and the interpretation of the findings. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation. An overview of literature pertaining to the social construction of HIV-AIDS, women’s empowerment and reproductive decision-making is presented. A discourse of “healthy lifestyle” as technologies of the self is considered. Women’s empowerment as an ideal is described and structural barriers to its achievement are discussed. Stigma and discrimination as products of hegemony are discussed as important issues in the disempowerment of women living with HIV. HIV-AIDS as illness experience is reviewed with reference to the social context and to the individual context. Reproductive decision-making models and theories are critically analysed for their applicability to women living with HIV. The need for a conceptual shift in the notion of empowerment in order to understand constrained decision-making for women living with HIV is propagated. The stories of women living with HIV and dependent on public health care services are presented. Through the principles of a critical ethnography the lived experiences of these women are described by means of emerging themes. A historiography of family planning and HIV-AIDS services throws the narrations of the research participants into broader historic relief. Findings revealed that biomedical hegemonic power contoured and marked the lived experiences of women following an HIV-positive diagnosis. Taken-for-granted views of passivity and of own responsibilities regarding reproductive health are challenged. The women in the study were dependent upon public health care personnel for treatment, testing, dietary advice/supplementation and recommendations for a social xii disability grant. ARV-treatment was regarded as a low point in the illness career. All of the participants reported that the overriding problems in their lives were having too few material resources and not having the means to change this. This made them vulnerable to compounded health problems and decreased their ability to voice their own opinions about treatment. They did not regard themselves as having been at risk for contracting HIV and some harboured resentment towards men who were seen as being absolved from testing and responsibilities towards female partners, born and unborn children. Women who were not tested as part of antenatal sentinel groups tended to suffer symptoms of ill health for some time prior to being tested for HIV. Social support systems were either absent or consisted of trusted family members and friends. In many cases, women became the silent care-givers for those affected and infected by HIV. Anticipated stigma permeated the participants’ narrations of living with HIV and disclosure of their statuses was difficult. The use of male condoms, stressed during counselling sessions, was narrated as a difficult burden for women to bear. Although the research participants expressed low fertility preferences, HIV-AIDS was seen as disrupting the link between heterosexual conjugal relations and the taken-for-grantedness of procreation. HIV-AIDS also disrupted norms in infant feeding practices and bottle-feeding was regarded as a sign of possible HIV-infection and hidden. The research participants were not empowered with knowledge about how to deal with side-effects, condom failures and the reluctance of male partners to be tested for HIV. They enacted, resisted and lived with HIV in different ways, incorporating some of the biomedically prescribed posturing as women living positively and blending it with stigma-negating performances and gender-prescribed ways of dressing, walking and acting. Participation in a support group validated their experiences and promoted positive self-perception. The formation of a collective voice in the support group was hampered by irregular attendance, the interference of community leaders and horizontal violence. Power relations, yielded by biomedical hegemony, androcentric sociocultural practices, material deprivation, fear, discrimination and stigma potentially undermined the women’s abilities to become empowered. Expansion of choices in various spheres or fields and collective action xiii are proposed as dimensions to be added to an empowerment-of-women approach to the problems of reproductive health in the age of HIV-AIDS. The contribution of the study as an emancipatory project is evaluated and implications for policy and practice are suggested. On a methodological level, this study is a demonstration of the contribution to be made by a micro-level, critical analysis to the body of knowledge about female reproductive health in the era of HIV-AIDS in South Africa. On a theoretical level, this study contributes to a wider conceptualisation of women’s empowerment by recognising the interplay between micro-level elements of situated experience, knowledge and preferences and the macro-level elements of sociocultural, biomedical and material influences on health and reproductive behavior.

In the 1990s, Susan Faludi’s Backlash: The Undeclared War Against Women (1992) was arguably of signal importance in the thematization of the limits imposed by the media on the negotiation of gender identity. However, the utilization of Faludi’s various analyses, in the interest of rendering social critique, has become progressively more problematic during the first decade of the 21st century. This is because her analyses engage neither with the development of media technologies subsequent to the early 1990s, nor with the way in which such technological developments now engage audiences on a greater multiplicity of levels than before, in a manner that consequently stands to inform their subjectivity to a degree hitherto unimagined. (A good example of the latter would, of course, be the proliferation of interactive exchanges on the World Wide Web). As such, in the light of such technological developments, this treatise is orientated around an investigation of the continued relevance of Faludi’s Backlash (1992) for the negotiation of gender identity in the contemporary era. In particular, its focus falls on West’s film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), which is considered against the backdrop of the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider phenomenon, which encompasses sequels to the film, online interactive sites, graphic novels, figurines, and video games, among other products. This investigation draws on the reception theory of, on the one hand, Adorno and Horkheimer, and, on the other hand, Stuart Hall.

"Some of the women amazed us" : discoveries through dialogue regarding women in Christian leadershipMcKenzie, Barbara Burkett 05 1900 (has links)
During my years in Christian education, I became fascinated by the fact that few
women participated in levels of visible leadership especially in light of the women's
movement in the broader society. Women had always been active in church life, perhaps,
more so than men. If societal barriers were falling for women, why were women not in
visible leadership positions in the church? This study uses a series of in-depth interviews
based on a phenomenological approach to determine what specific factors in the lives of
women who serve as Christian leaders either helped or hindered them in their pilgrimage.
Eight women were interviewed to discover their life experiences and three men to discern
their perspectives. As the eleven interviews were reviewed and analyzed, I read secular and
Christian literature to find supportive or corroborative information related to the emerging
themes.
The thesis is presented in two parts: first, an academic preface articulating the process
of research and analysis; and second, a study guide developed for women and men in my field
of practice, Christian education. Because I am committed to Christian education, I have
chosen to develop a study guide to be used for individual or group study. The method, the
discoveries, and the presentation share a common theme: the importance of dialogue.
Key observations in the study indicate that the factors that helped some women are the
same factors that hindered others and that each individual woman's ability to lead is
influenced by a complexity of factors. As the study guide develops, each of the factors is
discussed as one which helped or hindered the participants. Following the presentations of
themes are suggestions for changes, or transformation, with recommendations for further
study and possible action by individuals or local churches.
Among the participants, the Bible is considered the authoritative word of God and
each looked to the Bible for principles and guidelines regarding women in leadership. Based
on their respective interpretations of the Bible, some were led by hermeneutic processes to
believe that women are to lead alongside men as equal partners; others, however, hold the
view that women are not to assume the highest leadership positions. The cultural settings of
the participants influenced their leadership. Two factors, patriarchy and feminism, are
examined to identify aspects of each which help women in leadership in some cases and
hinder in others. Pivotal in the discussion is that each woman's sense of personhood affects
her own ability to assume leadership. A woman's identity is seen in view of her relationships
to her family, herself, and her God. For many women, pain emerged as a theme growing out of
frustrated efforts to pursue leadership faced with institutional opposition. Women are
encouraged to lead in many venues of the church, including education and missions. For
some women, leadership has been helped by existing policies; for other women, leadership

The process of shaping self through regular physical exercise among women : a grounded theoryFlood, Karen R. 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological and social processes of
regular physical exercise use by women who consider themselves "exercisers." In using
grounded theory method, the primary objective of this study was to generate a substantive
theory that described (a) the experiences of women who self-identified as exercisers and
engaged in regular physical exercise, (b) the contextual factors that influenced their
participation, and (c) explained the experience of participating in regular exercise,
considering both the positive and negative effects of exercising, and the process of change
through its use.
Twenty-two women (age range, 21 to 60 years) were interviewed about their exercise
experience. Twenty participants self-identified as exercisers. Two other participants, a former
exerciser, and a nonexerciser, were interviewed in order to explore theory limits.
A middle-range theory of "shaping self through exercise" was identified as the basic
process of these women's experience of regular physical exercise. The process involved the
reciprocal connection between two intrapersonal phases: "shaping up" and "experiencing self
as shaped." Through interactions among the subprocesses of shaping up ("talking to self,"
"experiencing exercise," "diverting from self" and "feeling good about self") exercisers in
this study experienced self as shaped through "growing into self," "grounding self in
exercise," and "expressing self through exercise." Influenced by personal meaning and
contextual conditions (one's personal exercise background, current life context, and socialcultural
environment), exercisers frequently re-experienced both phases. Aspects of each
conceptual element of the theoretical model are identified and illustrated by narrative data.
This grounded theory provides insight into the complexity of women's physical exercise
experience. To appreciate this experience it is necessary to view the social-psychological
process from an interactionist perspective. Findings suggest that women's exercise may be
more than physical movement in reaction to environmental and personal influences, but may
also be an intrinsically motivated endeavour towards self-growth, self-care, and selfexpression.
Awareness of the complexity of this process, including personal and contextual
influences, may provide guidance towards more successful adoption and maintenance of
exercise. Implications include future research directions to extend theoretical boundaries and

Pregnant women’s construction of social support from their intimate partners during pregnancyBottoman, Phathiswa Esona January 2018 (has links)
There is a growing body of research aimed at understanding social support during pregnancy in South Africa. Pregnancy is constantly referred to as one of the challenging and stressful periods affecting women’s physical and psychological well-being. Various research studies on social support argue that social support is paramount at this stage. Research on social support indicates that having adequate and quality social support impacts on how pregnant women experience pregnancy. My interest in social support comes in the wake of absent fathers in South Africa and with the emerging trend of “new” fathers. Although there is a volume of research on social support, it tends to be realist. Using a social constructionist framework, I explore other ways of talking about social support in an attempt to expand the discourse around social support. I explore how pregnant women talk about social support during pregnancy from their intimate partners in the small rural municipality of Elundini, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Intimate partner support was limited to heterosexual partners regardless of their marital status. The sampling procedure followed a non-probability sampling method. Participants of the study were between 24 and 32 years old. Their gestational age ranged between five and eight months. Fourteen in-depth interviews using photo-elicitation were conducted with seven participants and were analysed using a social constructionist informed thematic analysis. The major theme that emerged from the analysis was partner involvement and absence during pregnancy. The analysis of results suggests that expectant father presence translates to social support. Participants constructed his presence as reassurance in the context of possible abandonment. Absence was constructed in different ways: participants constructed absence as unjust and unfair, absence and marriage, temporary absence in the form of cultural phenomenon of ukwaliswa/ukubukubazana, absence as normal but burdening to the pregnant women’s social network. Participants reported that social support from the expectant father affected pregnancy wantedness.

Institutions of higher education in the field of music are developing music entrepreneurship courses, certificate programs, and majors in greater numbers than ever before. Researchers have begun to assess the types of skills relevant to this field and educators are creating curricula to reflect this consensus. Few researchers have yet undertaken an investigation of how this education is experienced by students themselves. This study uses interviews from a number of administrators and students, as well as observations of courses and an assessment of the numbers of men and women within the field of music entrepreneurship, to examine the experience of women students in particular. Data were collected from participants from three institutions of higher music education in the United States over the course of 1.5 years. The data are interpreted to reflect emergent themes, which demonstrate the extent to which women experience bias and empowerment in the field of music and music entrepreneurship.

The thesis tells, in non-chronological order, the story of the Slaughter family, a group of polygamists founded by Blackstone Slaughter, and in particular the family's women: Blackstone's wife, Jestyn, and their son Colt's five wives, Alma, Kayo, Larina, Josephine, and Laddy. An additional story, "Rabbit Starvation," set not within the Slaughter compound but within the town of Rose, adds further perspective.

The first objective is to examine the curriculum to discover the extent of affirmation of personhood in general. The second objective is to determine significant trends or changes over a six-year period of curriculum surveyed in terms of affirmation of personhood. The third objective is the recommendation of further changes in the curriculum so that it is more affirming of personhood.
