The present work had as the main goal, to verify the performance of glued joints for finishing touch of machined surfaces in operations of milling for different speeds of advance and of fine sanding for different granulometry of sandpaper, using wood of the Eucalyptus saligna type. For that; samples have been manufactured for the experiments regulated by the ABNT rule – NBR 7190, subjected to tests of resistance to the rupture of the glue line for efforts of degloving and for the normal traction. In the union of the wooden parts to make the samples 2 types of polyurethane based adhesives (PU) were used, named in this study Mono component PU and Bi component PU. In the preparation of the surfaces for the application of the adhesives, the first group of the samples was machined by the operation of cylindrical tangential milling employing three nominal advance speed “Vf” of 6,0; 11,0 and 15,0 m/min, the second group of samples was machined by the operation of sanding employing five types of sandpaper granulometry, grains: 80, 100, 120, 150 and 220. From the obtained results it is possible to point out the best performances from resistance to rupture; for the milled surfaces: to the degloving with Vf = 6,0 m/min with the PU Mono component and Vf = 15,0 m/min with the PU Bi component, to the normal traction Vf = 11,0 m/min for both PU adhesives; for the sanded surfaces: to the degloving with a 100 grain sandpaper and to the normal traction with the 80, for both PU adhesives

To Determine What Related Information is being Taught in the Junior High School Woodwork Shops of Texas

Jones, Roland T. January 1948 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent related information is being taught in the junior high school woodwork classes of Texas. The study will attempt to answer such questions as follows: Do the industrial arts teachers believe in teaching related information? If they teach related information, do they examine the students on it, and if so, to what extent does the related material affect the final grade? Approximately what part of the class period is recommended as the proper amount of time to devote to related information? Is there a shop library available to the students? Do the teachers require the students to have a textbook or workbook for each of the industrial arts courses they teach?

Selecting Technical Competencies for Beginning Industrial Arts Woodworking Teachers in a Competency-Based eacher Education Program

Hay, William C. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem was to identify the technical competencies necessary for beginning industrial arts woodworking teachers in Texas public secondary schools. Twenty-seven clusters of competencies were listed on a questionnaire sent to ninety-one supervisors of industrial arts in eighty-six Texas school districts requesting that these supervisors evaluate each cluster as "Essential," "Desirable," or "Unnecessary." Sixty-six questionnaires were returned (72.53 percent). A weighted rating scale was used to determine an overall evaluation for each cluster, with the result that twenty-five of the clusters were judged to be "Essential" and the two remaining clusters were judged to be "Desirable." It was concluded that the clusters judged to be "Essential" should be part of the required curriculum and that more training in tool maintenance be given.

Documentation and analysis of millwork: a method for mapping the evolution of Solitude

Ballard, Aleta Sue 05 September 2009 (has links)
Solitude, a nineteenth century farmhouse and historic landmark, located on the campus of Virginia Tech is currently slated for preservation. The purpose of this study was to trace the architectural history of the farmhouse and adjacent outbuilding through its existing mill work, hardware, and other architectural features. Eighteenth and nineteenth century architectural pattern books and the knowledge of architectural historians were used to date the interior millwork and hardware in this building. The millwork and hardware produced evidence of at least three distinct design periods. To determine if mill work and hardware dates supported the approximate construction dates commonly thought accurate for the three major sections of this building. The 1801 and 1834 sections of the house exhibit Federal style. Greek Revival dominates the 1851 section, as well as the renovated 1801 section, and the later additions exhibit Victorian style details. The adjacent log and frame outbuilding contained mill work that mixed Federal and Greek Revival elements. Using this information, along with information obtained from researchers who previously studied Solitude, a sequence of floor plans was developed. These plans show the evolution of the house through two major additions, as well as three smaller ones. The evolution of the outbuilding was also noted. / Master of Science

Relationships between woodworking technology and residential millwork in the nineteenth century : with an appendix on the implications for the evaluation of historic millwork

Morris, Jacob J. January 2006 (has links)
This document is an examination of the millwork industry in the nineteenth century and its influence upon the residential built environment. This study explores influences and results in relation to the development of millwork in the United States. The first is the technological divergence that developed between the United States and Europe, as America introduced different technologies to exploit the vast amounts of timber accessible to the New World. The second development occurred as the New World slowly developed a taste for the type of elaborate millwork previously associated with wealthy patrons. Low cost of materials and new technologies made more complicated wood finishes available to those of modest means. The third situation reflects the struggle between an elite class of architects and pattern book designers, who advocated restraint in design, and carpenter-builders and their clients, who wanted to display their talent or status through the use of a high level of ornamental millwork. / Department of Architecture
