The Pied Piper in Power: Ideological Resources and the Authoritarian Youth Group

Sterrett, Isaiah Zachary January 2012 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Gerald M. Easter / Thesis advisor: Jonathan Laurence / How do authoritarian states attempt to acquire ideological resources vis-à-vis their youth populations? This thesis demonstrates that one way in which these states attempt to do so is by way of an institution I call the authoritarian youth group (AYG). Examples of AYG treated in the paper include the Hitler Jugend in Nazi Germany; the VLKSM or Komsomol in the U.S.S.R.; and Nashi ("Ours") in post-Communist Russia. Primarily on the basis of secondary-source material, I argue that, across cases, governors of authoritarian states create and maintain AYG primarily in order to curry ideological resources among young people. In particular, states use AYG principally in order to legitimate the nation-state by espousing particular national narratives and lionizing the state; to promote among young people a sense of national homogeneity; to propagate particular mores related to gender, family, sex, and sexuality; and to affect the formation of a loyal elite for the state's future. The paper aims to contribute to the comparative-politics subfield by enhancing scholars' knowledge of authoritarian governance, ideological resources in authoritarian contexts, and, most importantly, the relationship between the authoritarian state and young people. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2012. / Submitted to: Boston College. Envolvimento de jovens em processos grupais de educação ambiental: um estudo de caso / Youth involvement in Group Processes of Environmental Education: a case review

Coati, Ana Paula 20 April 2006 (has links)
This research aims to contribute to the expansion in knowledge of the educational processes directed at the growth of the individual and collective action potential using emancipator environmental education. We presumed that the development of educational actions related to the environmental issue - based on the principles of participation, reflection and respect towards the environment in which one lives – contributes to the action potential related to attitude shifting in youth groups. Therefore, an intervention research was conducted with the “Environmental Diagnosis of the Vegetal Covertures and Degradation Focuses of the Piracicamirim River associated with Environmental Education through the Elaboration of Agenda 21 at the Jardim Oriente district" project, executed in the Piracicamirim River watershed (Piracicaba, SP). The research presented in this dissertation was conducted by educational intervention involving the youth population in the process of diagnosis, planning, intervention and assessment of the actions targeting improvement in the quality of life of Jardim Oriente and in the environment surrounding the Piracicamirim River. This analysis allowed the clear deduction that the social group is conditioned by the alertness of the individuals and the institutional mediations, on the development of a culture of social relations. Another main point for the group process and for the overcoming of the existing contradictions was the necessity of the group to analyse itself. Thereby, the quest in this process of the research occured on the group analysis, creating room for discussion, action, evaluation, self-evaluation and recreation of the youngster’s wishes within the group itself. Moreover, the space established through the group’s praxis, allowed the development of educational practices related to the environmental issue, contributing to the action potential and attitude shifting in the focused youth group.

O teatro jovem: diálogos com a cena contemporânea do Brasil e da Alemanha / The youth theater: dialogues with the contemporary scene in Brazil and Germany.

Nogueira, Alice Pacheco 22 September 2015 (has links)
This paper analyzes the relationship between the youth and the contemporary scene, having as objects of study the P14 group Jugendtheater der Volksbühne and the theatre play Favor beber o leite, senão estraga, by the Cronópio collective theatre company. The aim is to reflect on the works of postdramatic and performative theater to assess to what extent they suggest formative possibilities through the experience. The research on the work of the German group was made from on-site observation in the period from April to June 2014, in Berlin, and its context in the historical perspective of young German theater (Jugendtheater) and the Volksbühne theatre. The Brazilian theatre group play, in turn, comes from the premise of this paper - the experience as learning - and was built between June 2013 and May 2015, when the group focused on pre-expressive trainings and prepared the construction of the drama in the process.

Analysis of students' activity and personality developmentin math class : Three case studies among high school students from Saudi Arabia and France.

Aljohani, Amaal 10 November 2016 (has links)
In the social constructivist theory of Vygotsky (1985), taking into account the student, his knowledge and its culture is a must for learning and development. This research focuses on the analysis of the activity of the students of first year of high school, the critical age for the development of the adolescent's personality with regard to mathematical reasoning. The choice of subject is come from the reform of the Saudi educational system, and its project to develop mathematics in school. In this socio-constructivist approach, we decided to go closer to learning, field and also off the Saudi system, to see what is happening elsewhere, what is instead left to the young students. We observed, analyzed and discussed the interaction between students and teachers from three math classes in France and Saudi Arabia. In the approaches used in islet configuration, we realize that this is not just an organization in islet that can give voice to young students. The exchanges from the answer to a question, between the teacher and the students were low. In this thesis, we see give voice to young students in two different devices; focus group of l’ACG « l’autoconfrontation de groupe de jeunes », (the youth group of self-confrontation) that we have developed in our analyzes. The innovative approach (ACG) gives voice to young people in a social constructivist dynamics is that we seek to move to Saudi Arabia. The results show that the two devices are rich in potential, both rich because it gives confidence to students, and also because self-esteem is revalued. We also note that these devices have allowed an evolution of teaching practices.
