Materialitet och läsinteraktion : En undersökning kring ungdomars attityd till ett e-bokformat kontra tryckt bok / Materiality and the interaction of reading : A study of teenagers´ attitudes to the form of e-book versus printed book

The purpose of this thesis is to study the importance of materiality for the interaction of reading among teenagers, age 15-16. The purpose is also to study if the attitude to the form of e-book versus the printed book differs depending on how comfortable the teenagers are with the activity of reading. The method we have chosen for this study is the form of semi-structured interviews, four with teenagers who are positive to fiction reading and four with teenagers who say they don´t like fiction reading. We analyse the teenagers´answers by looking at some aspects of materiality to see how these aspects affect the interaction of reading.During the interview the respondents were asked to read one chapter of a book on an Ipad and the next chapter in a printed book. Our study shows that materiality is a factor for the interaction of reading and it can lead to different experiences of reading. Some aspects that the respondents mention as important are the amount of text, the typeface and the feeling of holding a book. The ones who are comfortable with the activity of reading claim they would still choose the printed book after reading both on the Ipad and in the printed book. The ones who are less comfortable with reading are more positive to the e-book, than they were before.
