This study is about gender in children's literature and the purpose of the study is to discuss and problematise how gender is produced in illustrations and text, in a number of picture books. The study is performed in a smaller municipality where we compare the five most borrowed picture books among preschools, with five gender conscious books. Earlier research show that gender in children’s picture books is stereotypic and repressive to girls and women, and that this fact in the long run give the female gender less choices in matter of career and looks. We want to highlight how gender is produced by the characters through characteristics, interests and appearance etc. With this study we want to find out if this is still the case or if we can see more of a gender positive development in children picture books today.
