Västerås stadshus - en modernistisk helhetsmiljö : Antikvarisk analys av interiören i Västerås stadshus. / Västerås town hall a holistic modernist environment : Antiquarian analysis of the interior of Västerås town hall.

Västerås town hall was built in several different stages between 1953-1988, the building was designed by the architect Sven Ahlbom who also designed several other buildings in the city among them thepublic library. The town hall contains different works of art by artists such as Edvin Öhrström, Tadeusz” Teddy” Sempinski and Erik Idar. The building has gone through different updates and changes toamong other things meet today’s demands for safety and fire safety, accessibility etc. As a result, from this loose furnishing, fittings and furniture can possibly have been lost, removed or replaced. This thesis is focused on the building’s artistic decoration, furniture, loose and fixed furnishings. The purpose of this is to possibly answer the following questions: which of the original loose furnishings, fixed furnishings and furniture remains in the building today? How has the building’s interior been affected by the implemented changes? How is the building affected by the business that is conducted? What risk is there that valuable culturally historic and artistic furnishings are lost? The thesis method is primarily comprised of archive studies for the reason that there is a large numberof documents concerning the town hall with everything from lists of purchases, protocols, newspaper clippings and drawings. Except for archive studies the thesis will also make use of literature studies to discuss the values of loose and fixed fittings, furniture, and artistic decoration. Except for the afore mentioned methods an ocular inspection will also be performed, in the purpose of comparing this with archive material, archive pictures and lastly if possible answer the questions. The result of this thesis demonstrates that a large part of the furniture, loose and fixed furnishing in building B is original and can also be found in archival material. Furthermore, it has also been established that the foremost supplier of furniture to the town hall was Nordiska kompaniet. Other than that, the thesis has also shown the conflict of interests that can arise when managing a public building. The goal of this thesis is to partly map the town hall’s remaining original loose and fixed fittings, furniture, and artistic decoration. Could this study possibly come to some use for future examination and/or survey of the building?
