"Man vill bara passa in" : En kvalitativ studie om hur andra generationens invandrare upplever samhörighet i det svenska samhället och viljan att vara en del av samhället

Many societal debates today are based on the problems that exist due to the lack of integration and segregation policy. Multiculturalism is one of the areas that often lifts in a negative context, however, there is another spectrum in this, the space the second-generation immigrants live in today. These people get stuck between the culture they were born into and the culture their parents grew up with, this means that they rarely get a place in society to talk about this problem. Previous research shows that people tend to group themselves with people whom they have the most in common with, which creates “us” and “them” groups. The second-generation immigrants have one leg in both groups; therefore, they end up in the middle. It also emerges those inequalities are created between groups in society and their ability to influence the democratic society. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the consequences that the second generation of immigrants are upon and their willingness to participate in Swedish democracy and get involved in civil society, which is a citizen's right. The method used to gain an understanding of their experiences is a qualitative method in the form of semi-structured interviews. The results showed that there are clear perceived differences between ethnic Swedes and second-generation immigrants. Above all, they see a strength in carrying several different cultures and that they create their own community when they end up outside of “us” and “them”. They take their civil rights seriously even though they may feel that it makes no difference. Thus, the study's conclusion was that the second-generation experiences differences between themselves and ethnic Swedes and that they feel that democracy is important and want to be involved but do not really feel that they get the platform when they are not in a position of power.
