Previous issue date: 2010-05-19 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The purpose of this research is a reading of Alexandre Herculano´s Eurico, o
presbítero. In this study, we examine Herculano not only as a historical novelist, but
as the author defines himself in his prologue, a "poet-chronicler," in other words, the
guardian of the memory, the Portugal´s identity. In this perspective, we realize that
Herculano, by alternating in his work poetry, through the memories worked in a
subjective way, and chronicle, used as a literary record of historical facts, then
chronological memory, had the intent to actually protect from the forgetfullness the
reference of Portugal´s identity. He really wanted to be the guardian of it. From this
perspective, we are led to a journey through time, through St. Agostinho and
Aristóteles´s theories. The collective memory earns the status of guardian´s identity.
Supported in Bachelard and Ecléia Bosi´s theoris, we will treat the function of the
memory and, respectively, of the images that populate it and are rebuilt through the
imagination of the novelist. Also important to note, in Herculano´s work, some
theoretical´s influences proposed by Rousseau, such as the return to the nature in
the search for a purification for the romantic author, through the removal of a society
he can´t tolerate. Herculano, rebuilding the Middle Age, also created an intertextuality
between his novel and Bernardim Ribeiro´s work, who was highly estimated in his
period, which shows that, as Bernardim, Herculano wanted that his novel were read
on two levels: a critic and a romantic way. We defend, therefore, that in the novel, we
found the idealization of a rebuild of the self, based on the interface man versus
nature, as this is the purification way of the society that is in a corruptive process, so
the intent of the author is not limited to be the guardian of the memory, but, the
incenter for the creation of a new Portuguese identity / A proposta desta dissertação é uma leitura da obra Eurico, o presbítero, de
Alexandre Herculano. Nessa pesquisa, examinaremos Herculano não somente como
um romancista histórico, mas sim, como o próprio autor se define em seu prólogo,
como um cronista-poeta , ou seja, o guardião da memória, da identidade
portuguesa. Nesta perspectiva, percebemos que Herculano, ao alternar em sua obra
a poesia, por meio das memórias trabalhadas de forma subjetiva, e a crônica,
utilizada como registro literário de fatos históricos, portanto memória cronológica,
revela a intenção de, na verdade, proteger do esquecimento a referência da
identidade portuguesa. Queria ser o guardião desta. A partir desta perspectiva,
somos levados a uma viagem pelo tempo, por meio das teorias de Santo Agostinho
e Aristóteles. A memória coletiva ganha o papel de guardiã da identidade.
Amparados em Bachelard e Ecléia Bosi trataremos do papel da memória e,
respectivamente, das imagens que a povoam e que são reconstruídas pela
imaginação do romancista. É importante ressaltar também, na obra de Herculano,
algumas influências teóricas propostas por Rousseau, tais como a volta à natureza,
na busca pelo autor romântico de uma purificação, por meio do afastamento de uma
sociedade que o desagrada. Herculano ao reconstruir o ideário da Idade Média,
criou também uma intertextualidade entre seu romance e o de Bernardim Ribeiro,
que era muito apreciado em seu período, o que evidencia que, como Bernardim,
Herculano queria que seu romance de amor fosse lido em dois planos: um crítico e
outro amoroso. Defendemos, portanto, que no romance, há a idealização de uma
reconstrução do eu, pautada na relação homem versus natureza, por esta ser
purificadora da sociedade em processo corruptivo, de modo que a intenção do autor
não se limita à de guardião da memória, mas sim, incentivador da criação de uma
nova identidade portuguesa
