Previous issue date: 2007-10-19 / The objective of this study is to research the notion of space in Michel Foucault s
work The Order of things. The study will be about epistemic configurations found all
through his work, thus the proposal here is to diagnose the space called epistemic.
For this purpose, three historic moments those approached in The Order of things
will be set in context as follows: Renaissance, Classic Age and Modern Age. Yet, each of
these periods will have Foucault s specification and focus as established in the nomination:
respectively, the Age of Resemblance, the Age of Representation and the Age of
Interpretation. Epistemic space characteristics of each period - archeologically located -
will be described.
Nevertheless, this research will have a specific approach: the use of geometric concepts
in the proposed diagnosis. That is the attempt to understand Foucault s notion of space
using a supporting reference: a geometric perspective setting the epistemic space. In the
diagnosis, three geometric notions will be applied to the three epistemic configurations
described in the work: the circle, the square and the depth. The purpose is to describe the
geometrical practices of the rotating circulation of the plane quadrant and of the
constitution in tri-dimensional depth of the volume in the knowledge. The circular
epistemic space, in the Renaissance of which practice surrounded the Age of Decoding will
be described; for the Classic Age the circular epistemic space which practice packed the
Age of Representation; and lastly, for the Modern Age, the voluptuous epistemic space
which practice opened the Age of Interpretation / Objetiva-se investigar, na obra As Palavras e as coisas de Michel Foucault, a
compreensão da noção de espaço . O estudo recairá sobre as configurações epistêmicas
encontradas ao longo da obra, pois a investigação aqui proposta pretende diagnosticar o
espaço chamado epistêmico.
Para tanto, três momentos históricos - aqueles mesmos abordados em As Palavras e
as coisas - serão contextualizados, a saber: o Renascimento, a Idade Clássica e a Idade
Moderna. Todavia, cada uma das épocas, terá o enfoque e especificidades estritamente
foucaultianas, já demarcados na própria nomeação: respectivamente a era da semelhança, a
era da representação e a era da interpretação. Procurar-se-á descrever o espaço epistêmico,
situado arqueologicamente, próprio de cada período citado.
Todavia, a pesquisa expressará uma especificidade na abordagem: a utilização de
noções geométricas no diagnóstico proposto. Ou seja, a tentativa é aproximar-se da
compreensão foucaultiana da noção de espaço valendo-se da abstração de um referencial
de apoio: uma perspectiva de figuração geométrica configurando o espaço epistêmico. No
diagnóstico, três noções geométricas serão aplicadas às três configurações epistêmicas
descritas na obra: o círculo, o quadrado e a profundidade. O intuito é descrever as práticas
geometrizadas da circularidade rotativa, da quadratura planificada e da constituição, em
profundidade tridimensional, do volume no saber. Assim, descrever-se-á, para o período do
Renascimento, o espaço epistêmico circular, cuja prática torneou a Idade da Decifração;
para o período clássico, o espaço epistêmico plano, cuja prática embasou a Idade da
Representação; e, por fim, para o período moderno, o espaço epistêmico volumoso, cuja
prática inaugurou a Idade da Interpretação
