NYHETSMEDIERS GESTALTNING OCH REPRESENTATION AV HIPHOP I SVENSKA DAGSTIDNINGAR : En kvantitativ och kvalitativ innehållsanalys av Aftonbladet, Expressen & Dagens nyheter / The news media's framing and representation of hip hop in Swedish newspapers. A quantitative and qualitative content analysis of Aftonbladet, Expressen and Dagens Nyheter

The aim of this essay is to study how the media represents and depicts the genre hip hop and its practitioners. The focus will be on how they write their articles and which theme they associate with hip hop, crime, addiction, everyday stuff or just music. The chosen material for this study is articles from three time periods. 1990-2000, 2000-2010 and 2010-2020. I used three of the most popular swedish mainstream media, Aftonbladet, Expressen and Dagens nyheter. During those three time periods I will apply search words, the two main words I gathered data from is firstly Hiphop secondly Rap the third and in some cases fourth searchword is an artist or an group that was popular during the time period in question. The methods I used for this essay was firstly a quantitative content analysis there i gather data from the search words and apply them in graphs. The second method is a qualitative content analysis where i dove in two articles and two song lyrics from two popular hip hop artists. I gathered inspiration to these methods from the past study “Det var finländarna som startade strejken” which had the same methods for the analysis and the study “Vinden har vänt” which is a swedish study about how hip hop artists are portrayed in swedish mainstream media. The conclusion I gathered from my analysis was that the term hip hop had a negative curve starting at 1990 as mostly positive and just about music to something negative mostly about crime in 2010-2020. I also analysed two artists Einar and Z.E that makes the same kind of music with harsh words and lyrics about guns, crime and drugs that still are portrayed differently, the only difference i could gather between the two artists was that Einar is white and fully swedish while Z.E had an immigrant background. Therefore my conclusion was that swedish mainstream media portrays hip hop artists differently based on their ethnicity.
