expanded the number of conflict situations especially in areas where exist greater
demand by lands for agriculture and cattle raising. In the state of Mato Grosso, this
intergroup contact has been aggravated not only due to the population growth and the
assumption of ethnic identity, but also, because the struggle for rights and affirmative
action s that have been promoting new contexts for intergroup experiences. Based on
that, the aim of this thesis was to apprehend the social representations concerning the
identity and prejudice elaborated by indigenous and non-indigenous students from the
Federal University of Mato Grosso. In order to achieve these aims the Theory of Social
Representations, the Theory of Intergroup Relationships and the Theory of Social
Identity guided this study. This research counted on two empirical studies: the first
aimed at apprehending the social representations of indigenous students about their
group and their experiences at the academic environment. This study included 34
students who answered biossociodemographic and thematic questionnaires. The data
were submitted to the softwares SPSS version 21 and ALCESTE respectively. The
results indicated that the social representations elaborated by the indigenous students are
diversified by who represent them and in which contexts the participants are included.
The indigenous university students who intend coming to the city are represented by
elements which point to the perseverance; dedication and will strength for accomplish
their goals. The social representations which brought out concerning their decision
making and their experiences of facing the challenges revealed that everything has been
done for the welfare of the community. The second study aimed at identifying the
occurrence of prejudice in the relationships between both groups by means of positive
and negative characteristics attributed to the indigenous and the cuiabanos by university
non indigenous students, according to their thoughts and also concerning the way of
thinking the society. This study counted on 160 university non indigenous students who
answered biossociodemographic and thematic questionnaires. The data obtained of
these two instruments were processed by the statistical package SPSS version 21 and
analyzed by means of descriptive statistic (mean and standard deviation). The results
revealed that the students are aware about the existence of the prejudice in Brazil. They
believe that the Brazilian society attributes mainly negative characteristics as lazy and
apathetic for the indigenous and the cuiabanos, in other hand, they themselves are happy
and hardworking persons. It is expected the obtained findings may contribute for
expanding the knowledge concerning the way the intergroup relationships occur, as well
as, the shapes of the prejudice brought out at the academic environment. / O aumento do contato intergrupal entre indígenas e não indígenas tem ampliado o
número de situações conflituosas principalmente nas regiões em que há maior demanda
por terras para a agricultura e pecuária. Em Mato Grosso, esse contato tem se
exacerbado devido não só ao crescimento demográfico e à assunção da identidade
étnica, mas também à luta pelos direitos e pelas ações afirmativas que promovem novos
contextos de vivência intergrupal. Neste contexto, esta tese objetivou apreender as
representações sociais sobre a identidade e o preconceito elaboradas pelos estudantes
indígenas e não indígenas da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso. Para subsidiar o
estudo fez-se uso da Teoria das Representações Sociais, da Teoria das Relações
Intergrupais e da Teoria da Identidade Social. Para alcançar este objetivo dois estudos
empíricos foram desenvolvidos: o primeiro com a finalidade de apreender as
representações sociais dos universitários indígenas acerca de seu grupo e de suas
vivências no ambiente acadêmico. Deste estudo participaram 34 universitários que
responderam a um questionário biossociodemográfico e a um questionário temático. Os
dados foram processados pelo SPSS versão 21 e pelo Software Alceste,
respectivamente. Os resultados indicaram que as RS dos indígenas se diversificam a
partir de quem representa e em que contexto se encontra inserido. Os universitários
indígenas que pretendem vir para a cidade são representados por elementos que
apontam para perseverança, dedicação e força de vontade para atingir seus objetivos,
enquanto que as representações que emergem em relação à tomada de decisão e ao
enfrentamento de obstáculos demonstram que tudo é feito pelo bem da comunidade. O
segundo estudo objetivou identificar a existência de preconceito nas relações entre os
dois grupos por meio de características positivas e negativas atribuídas aos indígenas e
aos cuiabanos por universitários não indígenas segundo o que eles pensam e o que
pensa a sociedade em geral. Participaram deste estudo 160 universitários não indígenas
que foram submetidos a um questionário biossociodemográfico e a um questionário
temático. Os dados oriundos destes instrumentos foram processados pelo pacote
estatístico SPSS versão 21 e analisados por meio da estatística descritiva (média e
desvio padrão). Os resultados indicam que os estudantes têm consciência da existência
do preconceito no Brasil, pois para os participantes a sociedade brasileira atribui
características essencialmente negativas como preguiçoso e acomodado aos indígenas e
aos cuiabanos, enquanto eles próprios afirmam que ambos são alegres e batalhadores.
Espera-se que estes achados venham a contribuir para um maior conhecimento de como
ocorrem as relações intergrupais e que forma tomam as manifestações do preconceito no
ambiente acadêmico.
