Previous issue date: 2008 / Resumo: O corpo é objeto de estudo em diferentes disciplinas, sendo compreendido de forma diferente em cada uma delas, abordado nos mais variados recortes de pesquisa. O corpo pode ser estritamente biológico, psicologicamente apreendido ou socialmente determinado, a depender do olhar que se lhe lança. O presente estudo, em sua novidade, objetiva abordá- pelo viés da linguagem. Alicerçada no dispositivo teórico-analítico da Análise de Discurso, a pesquisa procura compreender o funcionamento do corpo constituído por e na linguagem. A partir dos conceitos de memória discursiva, enquanto tecido material que sustenta o dizível para o sujeito, e de condições de produção dos sentidos, enquanto exterior determinante dos sentidos, discutem-se os gestos corporais como formulações do corpo e o corpo como materialidade significante do/no discurso. Discutem-se também o olhar e sua forma de funcionamento no discurso e o dizer dirigido ao corpo e constituindo identificações sociais. Como material de pesquisa, toma-se o corpo do descendente de japoneses no Brasil, analisando seus gestos, suas formas de nomeação, a história de imigração no país. A abordagem proposta para o corpo neste estudo traz para discussão o que está além do biomecânico e fisiológico e que o constitui. Ou seja, a diferença está em focalizar a linguagem, que transforma o ser biológico em sujeito simbólico. A contribuição que se quer dar às disciplinas que lidam com o corpo é uma leitura sobre o tema pela perspectiva da linguagem. Ao mesmo tempo, propõe-se contribuir com a teoria discursiva e os estudos sobre a linguagem com mais um elemento de reflexão no que se refere ao sujeito e ao sentido / Abstract: The body is the object of study in various disciplines. It can represent a strictly biological matter, a psychological constitution that can be apprehended or a socially determined object. This study, on its turn, aims at analyzing it via the language. The theoretical-analytical background comes from the Discourse Analysis. Based on key concepts as discursive memory . the historical complex whole that enables the speakable to the subject . and conditions of production of meaning . that is, external conditions that determine them, the body is understood as constituted in and by language. The focus of the study is to comprehend the way such constitution works. Within the study body gestures are seen as formulations of the body, and the body is seen as a significant materiality in/of discourse. The look and the word addressed to the body by the other are also theme of a deeper discussion. They are understood as constituents of the identifications of the body. The analysis is focused on gestures and body descriptions of Brazilians who are Japanese descendents living in Brazil. The discursive approach of the body goes beyond its biomechanical and physiological characteristics to reach it as a matter of language, language that transforms the biological human being into a symbolic subject. It is believed that this study may contribute to a better understanding of the body and to the re-discussion of its concepts in the various disciplines and that it may also contribute with the discursive theory and linguistic studies by touching on an essential subjective issue / Doutorado / Multiculturalismo, Plurilinguismo e Educação Bilingue / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada
