The purpose of the study is to study how pupils define bullying and what they perceive their school’s preventive work against bullying to be. Another purpose is to then illustrate and analyze how the pupils perceptions and the school’s preventive work correspond to the school law/ Skolverkets publications. The method applied was semi-structured focus group interviews where the pupils were able to express their own thoughts and reflections on the subject. The interview material was then compared and analyzed to literature on the subject bullying, to publications by the school law and Skolverket and to the school’s own publication on the preventive work applied by the school. The result shows that pupils are very much aware of what constitutes bullying and their definitions of bullying correspond to a high degree to the definitions found in literature about bullying. Something that becomes evident through the study is that bullying nowadays changes the arena where it takes place. A lot of the bullying takes place on the internet and through social media where school staff are not able to prevent the bullying from happening in the same way. The pupils are well aware of how the school’s preventive work against bullying and it does correspond to the school’s preventive plan. The school’s prevention plan does also measure up to Skolverkets own directions on how a school should work against bullying in a preventive way.
