língua entre migrantes brasileiros na RMB, Massachusetts, Estados Unidos. O tema é
explorado a partir de uma metodologia etnográfica e uma perspectiva in(ter)disciplinar. Em
primeiro lugar, são apresentados os antecedentes da pesquisa, seu desenvolvimento e o
desenvolvimento do trabalho de tese como um todo. A seguir, faz-se uma revisão da literatura
sobre migração com o intuito de identificar e discutir as diferentes abordagens sobre o tema e
os conceitos recorrentes. Ainda, revisita-se a literatura específica sobre a migração de
brasileiros para o exterior, com destaque especial à ênfase dada na literatura ao
estabelecimento e manutenção de uma “identidade étnica brasileira” em meio aos migrantes.
A seguir, discutem-se o conceito de identidade e o tratamento a ele dispensado nos diversos
campos do saber, além das diversas abordagens utilizadas para estudá-lo, enfatizando a
aplicabilidade empírica de alguns conceitos. Descreve-se a realização do trabalho de campo
em Governador Valadares, MG, Brasil e na Região Metropolitana de Boston, MA, Estados
Unidos, enfatizando como se dão as relações sociais, procurando relacioná-las aos usos,
funções e atitudes no que diz respeito ao inglês, ao português e à mescla lingüística.
Demonstra-se que a língua, entendida como prática social, tem um papel importante no
estabelecimento e manutenção da dinâmica identitária dos migrantes brasileiros, entre si e
com outros grupos sociais. Conclui-se, através da análise de categorias emergentes na
pesquisa, que a dinâmica das relações sociais em meio à “comunidade brasileira” constitui um
fator significativo na experiência migratória como um todo. / This study focuses on the issue of how identity choreographies relate to language
among Brazilian migrants living in the Metro Boston area, in Massachusetts, USA. The topic
is mainly developed based on ethnographic methodology and from an in(ter)disciplinary
standpoint. First, I present the antecedents of the research, next I tackle its development and
then I provide plan for the later development of the dissertation proper. In the following
chapter, I review the relevant literature on migration in order to identify and discuss the
several different approaches usually employed by researchers on this topic as well as the
concepts which are adopted in such studies. I also explore the studies concerned with the
specific issue of migration of Brazilians to several countries abroad, particularly to the United
States. I claim that researchers tend to overemphasize the establishment and maintenance of a
“Brazilian ethnic identity”. In the next chapter, I focus on the discussion of the origin and
evolution of the different concepts of identity and the treatment they have gotten in several
distinct research fields and conclude by presenting a path to the application of the notion to
the study of empirical phenomena. Next I discuss issues related to fieldwork both in
Governador Valadares, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and in the Metro Boston area,
highlighting how social relations take place and how they relate to different uses, functions
and attitudes toward English, Portuguese and the code mix of these two languages. I
demonstrate that language, understood as social practice, plays an important role to the
establishment and maintenance of the identity choreography of Brazilian migrants, among
themselves and in relation to other social groups. The emergent research categories allow me
to conclude that the social relations of Brazilians within their own community are a key
element of their migration experience as a whole.
