The purpose of this study was to learn what music teachers has to say about assessment. To find out what kind of tools and methods music teachers use when it comes to assessment and grading. Both summative assessment and formative. Also, to understand more about what tools they choose according to the difficulties they face when teaching. Finally, if and how music teachers collaborate with colleagues when it comes to assessment. With the help of sociocultural theory, the analysis was made of four qualitative interviews with music teachers. The participants of this study work in Sweden and have a varied amount of working experience. This study shows that music teachers use a number of tools to gather information about their students’ knowledge. Some use videorecording and likes to use it while others feel the opposite. Notes are used commonly among the participants though in different ways. Social moderation and collaboration between colleagues are sometimes used formally like planning the whole music program together and other times used more informal as discussions and advice given between colleagues. Formative feedback is a natural part of music education according to these participants, mostly acted out through simply talking with students and showing how. Video recordings of students performing can also be used for giving feedback in the class together with other students as a method for formative assessment. Observations is something that the teachers also want to talk about as a way of gathering information about students’ knowledge and the professional decision about grades. Difficulties that affect the teachers’ assessment such as classroom design and time is brought up in the interviews. The music teachers must find a balance between documenting students’ achievements and simply being in the room, focusing on the present moment.
