Modersmålets betydelse för svenska som andraspråkslärare : En intervjustudie om sva-lärares förhållningssätt till andraspråkselevers flerspråkighet

This study aims to explore high school level Swedish as a second language teachers’ approach to their multilingual students’ mother tongues, how and if these teachers use their students’ mother tongues for educational purposes and what general knowledge the teachers possess on first languages’ relevance to learning a second language. This study is conducted through a qualitative interview method with (5) five teachers participating. The results of this study show that the majority of teachers have a positive approach to the students’ mother tongue, with the exception of two teachers who set some reservations for what intention the usage of mother tongue in class has. All five teachers include students’ mother tongues for educational purposes in their classrooms. Only two out of five teachers could say that their previous academic studies provided them with education concerning the effect that a first language has on learning a second language, but all teachers expressed the same idea of how having a first language provides relatable structures to the second language.
