The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the concepts of basic liberties and primary goods in John Rawls theory of justice. The investigation is based on Rawls A Theory of Justice and Political Liberalism (in addition to other books and articles by the same author), and attempts to ascertain how closely Rawls liberalism approximates to classical liberalism. To this end, the analysis is divided into four stages. First of all, a general overview of Rawls theory of justice as equity is given. Secondly, the ideas of classical liberalism are expounded. Thirdly, the concept of basic liberties in Rawlsian theory is set out and, with this in mind, the starting point is Rawls Theory of Justice, followed by the critiques of Hart, Rothbard and Shapiro, and ending with Rawls replies to these critiques. Fourthly,
the concept of primary goods is presented, and follows the same line of explanation as for basic liberties. In this chapter, the critiques of Arrow, Sen and Kymlicka are examined. In the conclusion to the dissertation, the distinctions and similarities between Rawlsian
liberalism and classical liberalism are outlined in the light of an analysis of basic liberties and primary goods. / Essa dissertação tem como objetivo analisar os conceitos de liberdades básicas e bens primários na teoria da justiça de John Rawls, tendo como base principalmente as obras Uma
Teoria da Justiça e O Liberalismo Político, além de outros livros e artigos do autor, e então investiga-se em que medida o liberalismo de Rawls se aproxima do liberalismo clássico. Para
isso, nossa análise se desenvolverá em quatro etapas. Primeiro, apresenta-se um panorama geral da teoria da justiça como equidade de Rawls. Segundo, uma exposição do que entendese por liberalismo clássico. Terceiro, apresenta-se o conceito de liberdades básicas na teoria rawlsiana. Para tanto, a exposição sobre as liberdades básicas inicia-se com sua conceituação a partir do que Rawls escreveu em Uma Teoria da Justiça, seguindo com as críticas de Hart,
Rothbard e Shapiro e então apresenta-se as eventuais respostas de Rawls a essa críticas. Quarto, apresenta-se o conceito de bens primários, seguindo a mesma lógica de exposição das liberdades básicas. Os críticos que examinaremos neste capítulo serão Arrow, Sen e
Kymlicka. Finalmente, na conclusão, expõem-se as distinções e aproximações do liberalismo rawlsiano com o liberalismo clássico à luz da análise das liberdades básicas e dos bens
primários.
