Litteracitetsutveckling genom sång : Musikaktiviteter på folkbibliotek ur ett familjelitteracitetsperspektiv / The development of literacy through song : Musical activities at the public library with a family literacy perspective

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the library phenomenon singing with your baby as language and reading promotion by applying a family literacy perspective. The ambition is to explore the possibility that singing, through the support of a library activity, can help families develop their family literacy. Thus, contributing to knowledge of the events opportunity for early literacy development.  According to the psychologist Bruner (1983) the parents play a great role for the development of the child’s language. Inspired by that thought this bachelor thesis method of examination was to interview six parents whilst visiting a singing activity at their public library and to conduct a participant observation of the activity. Through this collected data, the aim was to understand the parents experience and find patterns in their answers. The data was then analysed from a sociocultural perspective. Public libraries face a great opportunity to support family literacy when parents visit the library as participants of the popular singing activity singing with your baby. Little research has been made in this specific topic, although some research has shown the benefit of library engagement with family literacy and other studies has demonstrated the advantages of singing as a method for language development. The study led to a distinction between parents who actively practiced language development with their child and visited the library activity in the pursuit of that realization. There were also parents who searched for inspiration within the singing activity. These parents were not clueless of the advantages of language development practice but rather disclosed the struggle that parenthood can be when facing the silence that can only be broken by a dedicated parent. One of the conclusions of this bachelor thesis is that when the goal is somewhat unclear, the practice is even harder to implement. By establishing singing with your baby as a family literacy practice, librarians can strengthen the parents view of singing as a language and reading promotion.
