Measurability is constant present in todays’ society in effort to secure quality, the schools’ sphere is no exception. A long with that the discourse of the school now revolves around a neo- liberal thinking about the markets, means that assessment and grading has a leading position. For students school is about grades. And the grade is their ticket into the labor market and adulthood of society. The grade is something you earn and use for higher studies and to be attractive for employers, and the knowledge behind the grade is what you use to function in society. The purpose of this study is to collect knowledge what that does to the students’ perception of the schools’ purpose and objective. Eighteen students divided in four groups has taken part in group interviews, which resulted in that five categories appeared in the students talk about the schools’ purpose. The result shows that the school for the students appears as a school with purpose for the system, a school with purpose for the individual, a school with purpose för the person, a school with purpose for the society, and a school as a value intermediary. This could have implications for the students understanding about democratic values role in society.
