The following study aims to analyze picture books that have been awarded with the August Prize. The study focuses on characters' gender representation and the picture books have been analyzed through a qualitative picture- and text analysis. The characters biological sex has one role in the analysis, but the emphasis lays on the characters actions and what the actions can say about their performative gender. The theories behind this study are Hirdman´s (2001, 1988/2020) and Butler´s (2007) gender theories. The literature analyzes showed that the representation of gender in the primary literature looks different and that gender does not necessarily correspond to the biological sex. The most important conclusion is that preschool teachers can influence which gender representations the children will be able to take part in the preschool's activities by consciously choosing literature for teaching. The Swedish preschool curriculum states that the staff should encourage the children to broaden their gender identity by for example encouraging them to take up activities that go outside the stereotypical gender norms (Skolverket, 2018).
