Studien syftar till att undersöka hur föräldrar resonerar kring sina barns gymnasieval för att få en fördjupad förståelse för dem i valprocessen. För att studera detta genomförs nio semistrukturerade intervjuer där fokus ligger på hur föräldrar resonerar kring tankar, känslor och sitt agerande. Materialet bearbetas och presenteras utifrån en tematisk analys för att därefter analyseras med stöd av Bourdieus teoretiska begrepp. Resultatet visar på att föräldrars resonemang i valet till stor del tycks baseras på deras kunskap om utbildningssystemet, vilket verkar väcka känslor och tycks resultera i att de agerar på olika sätt för att antingen införskaffa eller använda sig av sin kunskap, för att ge sina barn rätt förutsättningar för framtiden. Studien visar att föräldrars kunskap om utbildningssystemet i sin helhet tycks ha betydelse för deras resonemang om sina tankar, känslor och agerande. Dessutom tyder studien på att föräldrar använder sig av olika konverterings- och reproduktionsstrategier i valsituationen. / The purpose of the study is to examine how parents’ reason when selecting their children's high school, in order to get a deeper understanding of the parents during this process. In order to study this, nine semi-structured interviews are conducted, where the emphasis is on how parents’ reason around thoughts, emotions and their own actions. The data is processed and presented based on a thematic analysis and is then analyzed with the help of Bourdieu's theoretical concepts. The results indicate that parents' reasoning is largely based on their knowledge of the education system, which appears to evoke emotions and result in them acting in different ways to incorporate or make use of their knowledge in order to provide their children with the best possible prerequisites for the future. The study indicates that a parent's knowledge of the education system as a whole is seemingly important when reasoning their thoughts, feelings and actions.
