This is a qualitative study from a leadership perspective. The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge about how leaders within a trade union are affected by the sudden and forced change from leading mainly workplace-based work to lead through teleworking, with a special focus on the changed work environment. The sudden change is the covid-19 pandemic. To answer the purpose, following questions has been used: How do leaders lead their employees when teleworking? What challenges in leadership do leaders highlight when teleworking? What leadership qualities are considered valuable according to the leaders when teleworking? How do leaders satisfy their own and employees work environment in a change that has led to only teleworking? To collect the empirical material, nine leaders within one of Sweden´s largest trade unions have participated in semi structured interviews. In compiling of the results, the empirical material has been thematized and coded. To analyse the empiric material, sociocultural theory, based of Roger Säljö´s interpretation with physical- and intellectual tools, has been used in combination with transformative leadership. The results of the study show that leaders experience challenges in reading the behaviour of the employee, as the physical social interaction has disappeared. The spontaneous meetings are replaced by booked meetings with increased frequency. The physical meetings become digital and are separated for different purposes such as group meetings, individual meetings, and coffee meetings. The work environment is checked orally if any efforts as physical aids or psychosocial support are needed. The results also show that the leaders have learned new ways of working to adapt to the new context of teleworking.
