This essay deals with the subject of the use of news medium amongst the students in Karlstads University. The presentation of the problem is about illustrating the or those medium that is the most used amongst the students, and also which one, ore which ones of the news medium the students puts largest trust in. This subject was chosen with the purpose to illuminate patterns and attitudes of and to news medium, to make it easier for eventual research in the future to connect these patterns and attitudes with the participation in political elections. The subject in question is interesting because of the fact that the news medium is one of the largest sources of information for the citizens knowledge’s about the society, and the citizen’s attitude to the news medium might possibly have the ability to affect people’s commitment in politics. The methods that have been used are quantitative methods, partly in the way the data has been collected, which has been done through a questionnaire and a quantitative analysis of those data, and also through qualitative methods as an interview in depth, and a qualitative analysis of that. The results of the analyses did partly square with those theories that have been laid as a ground for the analysis’s, which dealt with the subjects of the medium role in the democratic society and the news medium today and also the trust in medium. The results showed that those medium that has high trust amongst the students are those who are classified as more “serious” for example the news within public service and morning papers. Those are not yet the medium that are used in first place by the students with an exception to television, where papers on the Internet and free papers are those medium that the students use most. The conclusion of this is that the economical aspect and the access of different medium plays a big part in the use of medium as a student. / Denna uppsats handlar om användningen av nyhetsmedier bland studenterna på Karlstads Universitet. Problemställningen handlar om att belysa det eller de nyhetsmedier som används mest av studenterna, samt vilket eller vilka nyhetsmedier studenterna har högst förtroende för. Detta ämne valdes med syftet att belysa mönster och attityder av och till nyhetsmedier, för att eventuellt i fortsatt forskning kunna knyta samman detta med deltagandet i politiska val. Frågan är intressant eftersom nyhetsmedierna är en av de största informationskällorna för medborgarna om vad som pågår i samhället, och attityderna till dessa skulle möjligtvis kunna påverka människors engagemang i politik. De metoder som använts är kvantitativa metoder, dels i insamling genom en enkät och kvantitativ analys av dessa data, samt kvalitativa metoder i form av en djupintervju och en kvalitativ analys av denna. Resultaten visade sig till viss del stämma överens med de teorier analysen utgått ifrån, som handlade om mediernas roll i det demokratiska samhället, nyhetsmedier idag samt förtroendet för medierna. Det visade sig att de medier som studenterna har högst förtroende för, är de medier, eller det medieinnehåll studenterna klassar som mer ”seriöst”, till exempel nyheter inom public service och morgontidningar. Dessa är dock inte de som används främst av studenterna, med undantag till TV, där tidningar på Internet och gratistidningar är de medier som används främst av studenterna. Slutsatsen av detta är att den ekonomiska aspekten samt tillgången till olika medier spelar stor roll för vilka medier man använder som student.
