This essay examines the government´s proposition regarding security zones as a new element in the crime prevention discourse. The study aims to identify, through an analysis of the proposition, what the problem is represented to be and why the measure is considered necessary. To implement this, Bacchis WPR-approach is used, an established method for discourse analysis. The proposition is also analyzed by a political science theory called strain theory, to examine if the proposition and the crime prevention discourse is reflected by a theoretical perspective. Sweden has found itself in a situation of increased violence and crime, described by the government as threatening the system, which is one reason for the emergence of the legislative proposal on security zones. The results showed that the problem is related to criminal gangs who are active in certain areas, specifically socially disadvantaged areas with lower socioeconomic status. Gang-related crime evolves and creates insecurity in society and the security zones seems not to prevent crime on its own, but needs a combination of other measures for reaching the goal. The results also showed that strain theory provides support for the discourse and the problem representation.
