Ibland handlar det bara om att så ett frö till någonting : En intervjustudie kring hur samhällskunskapslärare inom SiS främjar medborgarbildning / Sometimes it´s just about planting a seed of something : An interview study on how social studies teachers within SiS encourage civic education

This study aims to investigate how social study teachers within SiS perceive their students' vision of the future, their view of civic participation, and how the teachers work to promote a positive view among their students. The study is based on teachers' perspective on teaching in SiS-schools, both in youth homes and closed youth care. The material is based on seven currently working social study teachers, from seven different schools. The method used to make the teachers' perspectives visible has been implemented through a qualitative method with semi- structured interviews. The work has been analyzed using three theoretical frameworks, which are Anthony Gidden's theory of identity in modernity, Martin Buber's I and Thou philosophy, and John Dewey's reasoning about pragmatism. The first part of the study presents teachers ́ perceptions of students ‘vision of the future as well as their view of civic participation. The second part of the study presents teachers' perspectives and methods, in which they emphasize their pedagogical approaches and teaching methods. The results show that a large proportion of the students ́ have inadequate self-confidence, often due to the previous school failures that many have experienced. The inadequate self-confidence was a reason to the students' poor vision of the future. Furthermore, the teachers were also able to show that there was a lack of trust among the students for adults and society, which affected the students' willingness to participate in society. Based on the teachers ‘descriptions of the students, the teachers base their work on the ideas that exist among the students. The study shows that the teachers' relationship- building efforts will be decisive for how the students experience the teachers and society's adults in general. They function as an extension of the society in which they previously had no confidence, which contributes to a positive view of being part of the participating aspects. Based on the study, it can be stated that the teachers primarily work to promote the view of the student himself, to be able to promote the view of society. Therefore, teachers work a lot to let the students succeed, by using the students' experiences and valuing them.
