Gang violence has been a significant problem in Sweden in the past few years. The issue has magnified, now extending its grasp to the youth, exacerbating the challenge even further. This leaves negative consequences for both the pupils, teachers and the school. The purpose of this study was to examine how social studies teachers in the upper secondary school describes youths involved in gang activities. Also, the study enlightens the reader on the preventive work carried out by teachers to reduce the risk of pupils being drawn into criminal networks. Before conducting the reachers, this study examines what previous rescuers have said about this matter. Furthermore, our chosen method is the qualitative method in which we conduct interviews. The interviews are done with social studies teachers that teach in the upper secondary school, where we ask them about the research questions. Moreover, we analyze the results with the help of three different theories, these are the labeling theory, the social bond theory and the strain theory. Also, we consider the intersectionality perspective during our analysis. In relation to the results, our research showed that there are several behaviors that can showcase that a pupil is at risk of being drawn into criminality. Some of these identified factors were behavioral changes, being absent from school and lack of engagement in schoolwork. Regarding the work teachers do to prevent pupils being drawn into criminality, our research showed that the most central element of the preventative work conducted by teachers was establishing a strong bond with the pupils. To sum this up, our study can bring further understanding of the behaviors exhibited by students at risk of involvement in gang activity, as well as identify effective preventive measures made by teachers to reduce this risk.
