are the paths man has trailed to understand his own existence and the one of the
world that surrounds him. In this work, we bring together two manifestations of the
human being in its desire to self-knowledge: Phenomenology and Literature.
However they belong to different fields of knowledge, both suggest the reconciliation
between man and his nature by similar means, based on the rupture of the functional
relationship the Western man is used to establishing with the world and also with
language. According to these perspectives, human activity starts operating in the
sensorial level, which takes man to the base of his perceptual experience. In order to
draw this parallel, we will first address the key concepts of the Merleau-Pontyan
phenomenology - the flesh, reversibility, chiasm, visible/invisible. Then we will level
them to literary concepts, based on ideas of poets, writers, critics and scholars. By
pointing out the similarities between phenomenology and literature, we aim to
understand the latter as being a phenomenon in its essence. To sustain our
argument, we shed light on the debate over child literature and particularly on the
very idea of infancy. This helps deepen the previously established bonds between
the fields of knowledge dealt here. Finally, under the light of phenomenology and of
literature, we will look at two major literary works: the prose of Bartolomeu Campos
de Queirós s The glass eye of my grandfather , and the poetry of Manoel de
Barros s Ascension / A busca ontológica revela-se como apanágio do homem racional. Muitos são
os caminhos que se tem percorrido para compreender a própria existência e a do
mundo que nos cerca. Aproximamos, neste trabalho, duas manifestações do ser
humano em seu desejo de autoconhecimento: a Fenomenologia e a Literatura.
Apesar de pertencerem a diferentes áreas do saber, observamos que ambas
propõem a reconciliação do homem com sua natureza por meio de processos
semelhantes, baseados no rompimento da relação funcional com a qual o homem
ocidental está habituado a travar com o mundo e também com a linguagem. A
atividade humana passa, nestas duas perspectivas, a operar no campo das
sensações, trazendo o homem para atualidade da experiência perceptual. Para
estabelecer este paralelo, abordamos, primeiramente, conceitos chave da
fenomenologia merleau-pontyana carne, reversibilidade, quiasma, visível/invisível
equiparando-os, seguidamente, a conceitos da literatura sustentados pela fala de
poetas, escritores, críticos e teóricos. Ao apontarmos as possíveis aproximações
entre Fenomenologia e Literatura, objetivamos elucidar a Literatura como sendo,
essencialmente, um fenômeno. Ainda como apoio argumentativo, trazemos para
foco de discussão a literatura infantil e, sobretudo, a concepção da infância que, por
sua vez, estreita os laços já estabelecidos entre as áreas do conhecimento em
questão. Finalmente, sob a luz da fenomenologia e da literatura, realizamos a
análise de dois textos literários: a prosa de Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós em O
olho de vidro do meu avô , e a poesia de Manoel de Barros em Ascensão
