Previous issue date: 2014-08-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research is about women in situation of prostitution operating in the central region of Santo Amaro - São Paulo, specifically nearby Largo Treze de Maio. It investigates the religious trajectory of six women noting the relationship of the same religion, the place that it occupies in their lives since the early years of existence until the current moment. The first chapter describes the historical context of prostitution, the different meanings and understandings that the phenomenon acquires throughout the history of mankind. The second chapter presents the reality of prostitution in Santo Amaro, showing the different modalities of brothels and the profile of the women who work in these places. The third chapter analyzes the data collected from the gender relations, using as category: religion of origin, religion in adult life and the place of religion in the lives of women after entering into prostitution / Esta pesquisa é sobre mulheres em situação de prostituição que atuam na região central de Santo Amaro São Paulo, especificamente nas proximidades do Largo Treze de Maio. Investiga a trajetória religiosa de seis mulheres constatando a relação das mesmas com a religião, o lugar que a mesma ocupa na vida delas desde os primeiros anos de existência até o momento atual. O primeiro capítulo descreve o contexto histórico da prostituição, as diferentes significações e compreensões que o fenômeno adquire ao longo da história da humanidade. O segundo capítulo apresenta a realidade da prostituição em Santo Amaro, mostrando as diferentes modalidades dos prostíbulos e o perfil das mulheres que atuam nesses locais. O terceiro capítulo analisa os dados coletados, a partir das relações de gênero, utilizando como categoria: a religião de origem, a religião na vida adulta e o lugar religião na vida das mulheres após ingressarem na prostituição
