Title: Sustainability in project management - A qualitative study about how sustainability is implemented and communicated in a project. Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Rickard Kokkonen and Jesper Persson Supervisor: Benny Berggren and Agneta Sundström Date: 2020 - June Purpose: The aim of this study is from a project management point of view contribute with a deeper understanding on how sustainability is implemented and communicated through all stages of a project and create a theoretical model. Method: The study is based on a qualitative research method, through ten semi-structured interviews the answers from each respondent has been interpreted through thematic analysis. Findings: The findings from this study resulted in a model that explains how the communication about sustainability occurs in a project. This study has also found out that it is the project owner’s responsibility to implement sustainability and it is mainly done through certifications. The certificate forms the basis for how sustainability is communicated. Main contribution: The study contributes to a deeper understanding on how the project management perceives that sustainability has been implemented and new knowledge about how sustainability is communicated throughout the project. Futhermore, the study contributes with new insights about what certification means to organizations that lacks knowledge and to consumers that make demands. Future research: The study has found two areas in sustainable project management that need more research. Internal communication is in need of more research on the design of certifications and the work within it. Regarding the external communication, we believe that more research is needed on how sustainable projects affect customers' purchasing behavior. Metod: Studien utgår från en kvalitativ forskningsmetod. Genom tio semistrukturerade intervjuer där fokus har varit att tolka respondenternas svar genom tematisk analys. Resultat & Slutsats: Resultatet från denna studie mynnade ut i en modell som förklarar hur hållbarhet kommuniceras i ett projekt. Vidare kom studien fram till att det är projektägarens ansvar att implementera hållbarhet vilket främst sker genom miljöcertifieringar. Dessa kommer i sin tur genomsyra projektets alla faser. Bidrag: Studien bidrar med ökad förståelse över hur projektledningen uppfattar att hållbarhet har implementerats samt ny kunskap om hur hållbarhet kommuniceras. Vidare bidrar studien till nya insikter för vad certifieringar innebär till både organisationer som saknar kunskap och konsumenter som ställer krav. Förslag till vidare forskning: Studien genererar i huvudsak två områden som behöver mer forskning. Inom intern kommunikation efterfrågar denna studie mer forskning kring arbetet och utformningen av certifieringar.
