The trend towards increased reliance on technology and a globalized world has left banks more exposed to operational risks than ever before. Operational risk is the prospect of loss resulting from inadequate or failed procedures, systems or policies. It also includes personnel errors, systems failures, fraud or the criminal activity and any event that disrupts business processes. Digital development has changed operational risks and subsequently changed how banks handle these risks. The literature review shows that the definition of operational risk can occur unclear which complicates the management, but that digitalization streamlines the processes. Therefore, in this paper we examine the relationship between operational risks and digitalization in the Swedish banking sector. The study has been conducted with a method combination as an approach to address several aspects within the organisations. Four Swedish banks has been interviewed regarding their management of operational risks. We examine whether it is possible to apply a self-made model to their operations, how they choose to define operational risks and what benefits the digitalization can implicate. A survey was also conducted to investigate the level of knowledge among employees regarding operational risks. The conclusion is that the four Swedish banks have distinct strategies and control functions to manage their operational risks and according to them, digitalization has changed the nature of operational risks. We also came to the conclusion that there is a gap of knowledge among the employees about what operational risk is.
