Web As A System Of Architectural Organization: Frankfurt-romerberg Competition Project

Beseli, Heves 01 July 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to reveal the potentials of &ldquo / Web&rdquo / as a system of achitectural organization. This concept developed by Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic, and Shadrach Woods can be seen as a product of the discourse arose in 1960s, which concieves the city as a continuous and dynamic structure rather than a static entity composed of individual buildings. In this sense, Web appears as a system of architectural organization that responds to this dynamism by enabling growth and change. In this thesis, Frankfurt-R&ouml / merberg Competition Project by Candilis-Josic-Woods (CJW) is analyzed to understand the potential of Web in organizing both physical and social relations. Revealing the potentials of Web requires examination of other concepts introduced by Candilis-Josic-Woods. Therefore, the relationship between Web and its sources (casbah and bidonville) and precedents (habitat &eacute / volutif and Stem) will be constructed. In order to construct this relation and to understand how Web operates as a system of architectural organization, the components and design acts of Web as well as its potentials will be analyzed in the case of Frankfurt-R&ouml / merberg Project. In doing so, the project will be seen as the main prototype of Web. The thesis will also put emphasis on habitat &eacute / volutif as the main idea behind Web. It will be argued that habitat &eacute / volutif evolved into Web with the help of stem as a connecting element.

Experiencing Class Differences: The Case Of Food Retail Store Workers In Ankara Sinifsal Farkliliklarin Deneyimlenmesi: Ankara Market Iscileri Ornegi

Koptekin, Derya 01 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to examine the class experiences of workers who work in food retail stores in Ankara. In this respect, it focuses on the structure of food retailing as interactive service work, working conditions of workers, stratification, fragmentation and unionization of workers in stores. In addition, it examines how workers experience class as a matter of self-esteem in their workplaces, how they cope with discourtesy of costumers, how they classify costumers and whether they develop a sense of deprivation if it is taken into consideration that they work in a consumption area. It is also analyzed gender and family relations of store workers, and their future hopes and unfulfilled dreams. The study argues that stores with their workers, their managers and their diverse costumers profiles are significant places so as to observe how class differences are continuously reconstructed in everyday life through work and consumption practices. In regard to these issues, the field research of the thesis was employed through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 37 store workers who deal directly with customers and works in various food retail stores in Ankara.

A General Pseudospectral Formulation Of A Class Of Sturm-liouville Systems

Alici, Haydar 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, a general pseudospectral formulation for a class of Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems is consructed. It is shown that almost all, regular or singular, Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems in the Schr&ouml / dinger form may be transformed into a more tractable form. This tractable form will be called here a weighted equation of hypergeometric type with a perturbation (WEHTP) since the non-weighted and unperturbed part of it is known as the equation of hypergeometric type (EHT). It is well known that the EHT has polynomial solutions which form a basis for the Hilbert space of square integrable functions. Pseudospectral methods based on this natural expansion basis are constructed to approximate the eigenvalues of WEHTP, and hence the energy eigenvalues of the Schr&ouml / dinger equation. Exemplary computations are performed to support the convergence numerically.

Unfolding Diagrams As Generative Design Tools In Architectural Design Process:united Network (un) Studio-mobius House / Arnhem Central Station / Mercedes Benz Museum

Kuyumcu, Basak 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of the diagrams as generative design tools in architectural design process. Identifying the utilization of the diagrams as infrastructural and organizational elements in the design process, it aims to be concentrate on their potency for generating novel design concepts. The search has been for the possibilities of design processes developed and manipulated not through analytical use of diagrams that represents the already established relationships but through their generative use that is responsible for the proliferation of ideas for novel design concepts. The alteration in the definition of diagrams, their active role in the generation of design ideas, and their progression during the design process, as well as the ways in which they contribute to the delay of formal concerns through the practice are scrutinized. In order to explore the generative and mediating roles of diagrams in architectural design practice, this thesis examines the utilization of diagrams by exemplifying the strategies of UN Studio. Through exploration of their pioneering projects, the M&ouml / bius House, the Arnhem Central Station and the Mercedes Benz Museum, it aims to unfold their design methods regarding diagrams. Diagrams are examined in terms of the way they are utilized and operated from conceptualization to building. While standing at a critical distance, it argues for an architectural design process where design ideas are formed and evolved by utilization of diagrams as generative tools from the initial phases of the design to the actualization of the building.

Drinking Water Quality In Ankara: A Monitoring Study

Tezce, Gozde 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
ABSTRACT DRINKING WATER QUALITY IN ANKARA: A MONITORING STUDY Tezce, G&ouml / zde MS, Department of Environmental Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. &Uuml / lk&uuml / Yetis Co-Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Filiz B. Dilek December 2010, 124 pages Following the event of severe drought experienced in 2007, it was decided to use Kesikk&ouml / pr&uuml / Reservoir as an additional source of water supply for the city of Ankara. Thereupon, there have been debates on the quality of Kesikk&ouml / pr&uuml / Reservoir water with the claims that some parameters, primarily sulfate and arsenic, were not complying with the quality standards and therefore there was a threat to public health. This study aims to determine whether the water quality in the distribution network in Ankara exceeds water quality standards, and to assess the status of water quality of Ankara. To this end, monthly samples were collected from 24 districts as distribution network water and also from the Kesikk&ouml / pr&uuml / Reservoir as source water, and were monitored in terms of certain water quality parameters during the period of July 2008 through June 2009. Sulfate concentration in Kesikk&ouml / pr&uuml / Reservoir water was measured as 300-500 mg/l and this high sulfate concentration in the source water led to high sulfate values in distribution system. On the other hand, the arsenic concentration in Kesikk&ouml / pr&uuml / water was analyzed between 9-11 &micro / g/l which is lower than the expected high arsenic concentration in Kizilirmak water. Moreover, monitoring of THM and HAA in distribution network was carried out to follow DBPs formation. The highest THM concentration was observed as 109 &micro / g/l for Bilkent in July 2008. Although for some districts and some months throughout the year THM concentration was higher than the EPA Stage-I (80 &micro / g/l) and Stage-II (40 &micro / g/l) limits, mean annual THM concentrations for districts in distribution system satisfies the standards. Furthermore, the highest HAA5 concentrations were determined as 75 &micro / g/l for Dikmen in February 2009. However, annual average HAA5 in any of the districts did not exceed USEPA limit of 60 &micro / g/l. Nonetheless, total/fecal coliform bacteria, which are the indicators of microbiological contamination, were detected in distribution system between the months of July 2008 and January 2009. However, the coliform bacteria did not appear with the increasing residual chlorine in the distribution system since January 2009. Results from this study demonstrate a temporal variability in water quality / indicating water quality deterioration in the distribution system during some months, while almost full compliance with the water quality standards during other months. Overall / due to Kesikk&ouml / pr&uuml / raw water, sulfate content appears to be the major concern in the water quality when considered the one-year monitoring period.

Pseudospectral Methods For Differential Equations: Application To The Schrodingertype Eigenvalue Problems

Alici, Haydar 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, a survey on pseudospectral methods for differential equations is presented. Properties of the classical orthogonal polynomials required in this context are reviewed. Differentiation matrices corresponding to Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite cases are constructed. A fairly detailed investigation is made for the Hermite spectral methods, which is applied to the Schr&ouml / dinger eigenvalue equation with several potentials. A discussion of the numerical results and comparison with other methods are then introduced to deduce the effciency of the method.

Bose-einstein Condensation At Lower Dimensions

Ozdemir, Sevilay 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, the properties of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in low dimensions are reviewed. Three dimensional weakly interacting Bose systems are examined by the variational method. The effects of both the attractive and the repulsive interatomic forces are studied. Thomas-Fermi approximation is applied to find the ground state energy and the chemical potential. The occurrence of the BEC in low dimensional systems, is studied for ideal gases confined by both harmonic and power-law potentials. The properties of BEC in highly anisotropic trap are investigated and the conditions for reduced dimensionality are derived.

Exciton Simulations Of The Optical Properties Of Several Photosynthetic Light-harvesting Complexes

Iseri, Erkut Inan 01 June 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The work presented in this thesis was aimed to investigate the structure-function relationship of several photosynthetic Light-Harvesting Complexes (LHCs) including Chlorophyll Protein 29 (CP29) and Light-Harvesting Complex II (LHCII) of green plants, and Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex of green sulfur bacterium Chlorobium tepidum. Based on the exciton calculations, a model was proposed to the electronic excited states (EES) of both CP29 and LHCII complexes by incorporating a considerable part of the current information offered by structure determination, mutagenesis analysis and spectroscopy in the modeling. The essential parameters for characterizing the excited states, Qy dipole orientations and site energies were assigned by suggesting a model that can explain both the key features of the linear (polarized) absorption spectra and the time scales of the energy transfer processes in CP29 and LHCII. The idea of offering structural information through setting connection between the spectroscopy and the spectral simulations were supported by the presented results on CP29 and LHCII. New spectroscopic measurements (absorption, linear dichroism (LD) and circular dichroism), carried out at 4 K on the FMO complex were presented, and also the LD spectrum was corrected for the degree of orientation of the sample, in order to provide comparison of not only the shape but also the size of the simulated and experimental spectra. The EES structure of the FMO complex was studied by simulating the measured optical spectra with more realistic model than the previously applied models. Simulations have been carried out with a computer program based on exciton model, which includes inhomogeneous, homogeneous and lifetime broadenings explicitly.

Divisibility Properties On Boolean Functions Using The Numerical Normal Form

Gologlu, Faruk 01 September 2004 (has links) (PDF)
A Boolean function can be represented in several different forms. These different representation have advantages and disadvantages of their own. The Algebraic Normal Form, truth table, and Walsh spectrum representations are widely studied in literature. In 1999, Claude Carlet and Phillippe Guillot introduced the Numerical Normal Form. NumericalNormal Form(NNF) of a Boolean function is similar to Algebraic Normal Form, with integer coefficients instead of coefficients from the two element field. Using NNF representation, just like the Walsh spectrum, characterization of several cryptographically important functions, such as resilient and bent functions, is possible. In 2002, Carlet had shown several divisibility results concerning resilient and correlation-immune functions using NNF. With these divisibility results, Carlet is able to give bounds concerning nonlinearity of resilient and correlation immune functions. In this thesis, following Carlet and Guillot, we introduce the Numerical Normal Form and derive the pairwise relations between the mentioned representations. Characterization of Boolean, resilient and bent functions using NNF is also given. We then review the divisibility results of Carlet, which will be linked to some results on the nonlinearity of resilient and correlation immune functions. We show the M&ouml / bius inversion properties of NNF of a Boolean function, using Gian-Carlo Rota&rsquo / s work as a guide. Finally, using a lot of the mentioned results, we prove a necessary condition on theWalsh spectrum of Boolean functions with given degree.
