Electromagnetic Homogenization-simulations of MaterialsTörnqvist, Julia January 2019 (has links)
This thesis aims to determine the distribution of the relative permittivity for random mixtures of material using electromagnetic simulations. The algorithm used in the simulations is the FDTD method which solves Maxwell's equations numerically in the time-domain. The material is modeled as randomly shaped particles with radius 12 ± 10 micrometre in x- and y-direction and radius 3 ± 1 micrometre in zdirection. The scattering parameters from the transmitted and reflected electric field when a plane wave interacts with the material are measured. The relative permittivity is determined from the scattering parameters using the iterative Baker-Jarvis method. The simulations shows that both the distribution and the value of the relative permittivity is low when the particles have non conducting layers to force interruptions to prevent percolation, a conducting path between the particles. The most important result is of the kind where the simulations do not have any boundaries to prevent percolation. These simulations reflects how the relative permittivity distributes in real measurements. It is established that the value of the relative permittivity has a large distribution and also that percolation occurs because of the periodic structures.

The vast majority of the world population is increasingly exposed to electromagnetic radiation from sources which are often located near to the body. Electromagnetic radiation is considered a possible carcinogen for people, classification 2B indicated by the World Health Organization-WHO (WHO/IARC, 2011). Due to concerns regarding the risks associated with this exposition there are regulations suggesting maximum allowed exposure values (ICNIRP, 1998; FCC, 2001). The correct evaluation of radiation doses is therefore relevant. This work aims to assess the impact of the results of the calculation of Specific Absorption Rate dose (SAR) in users exposed to radiation from tablets operating in the Wi-fi band. The three existing models of human head used are a homogeneous dummy SAM phantom and two heterogeneous realistic head models: a male adult and a male child. It will also be used in the simulations a male child model which was developed from computed tomography (CT) imaging using the AMIRA software for the segmentation process. A generic model of tablet is used. Dosimetric parameters used for simulation of the SAR are computed using the SEMCAD X software which is based on the Finite Difference Method in Time Domain (FDTD). A FDTD code was developed using the MATLAB software in order to help to choose the input SEMCAD X parameters. The distances between the tablet and the head of the models varies from 50 mm to 300 mm. SAR results are compared with the exposure limits recommended by international standards. Different antenna positions on the tablet are simulated too. Examining the results it was found that the SAR values are very low and all results are within the psSAR limits recommended by FCC (1,6 W/kg averaged over 1 g of tissue) and by ICNIRP (2 W/kg in 10 g of tissue). Comparing the SAR in the SAM model with the SAR in the DUKE model, the SAM model shows to be conservative. However, when compared with the children, the SAM is not conservative.

Etude des effets non linéaires et de la susceptibilité des systèmes électroniques embarqués / Study of the nonlinear effects and the susceptibility of the electronic systemsGuibert, Laurent, Christian, Jean 16 December 2014 (has links)
In the frame of ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC), the knowledge of EM immunity or susceptibility levels of on-board equipment is an important parameter to control and manage throughout the whole life of equipment. In fact, during maintenance phases of this equipment, it is important to ensure that these levels are maintained in order to guarantee its operation. To meet this need, this thesis proposes to focus on a novel and easy-to-implement experimental method for a quick diagnosis of equipment EM radiated susceptibility at high frequency.. This method is based on the observation of the harmonic frequencies radiated by an equipment device when this one is summited to a perfectly monochromatic illumination at high frequency. We make the hypothesis that the amplitude of those frequencies increases when the electronic equipment is in a dysfunction state. For this, a experimental method suitable for MSRCs has first been developed and studied to highlight the principle of this method. Then, having observed experimentally the radiation phenomenon of harmonic frequencies on several configurations of electronic cards, we have developed a 3D FDTD model to simulate the phenomenon. With this model, a modeling of the experiments was carried out and comparisons between measurements and calculations were performed. Calculation results coming from FDTD Maxwell’s equation models showed trends and functional behaviors identical to those observed in measurements which demonstrated that the proposed control method was fully viable. Regarding the modeling phase, we concentrated on models describing the operation of the logic circuit but we did not to enter into the physical description of each electronic component. Our selected applications have therefore focused on the inclusion in the Maxwell FDTD model of a digital signal represented as a series of bits, as well as the introduction of some components such as a diode and a CMOS inverter. The generalization of the proposed inverter model can be easily extended to other CMOS components such as the SRAM memories we studied in experimental tests.

Selected methods of Raman spectroscopy, like surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and single molecule Raman spectroscopy, are described in this diploma work. The basis of two methods for numerical modelling of optical properties of micro- and nanoparticles are prefaced. The methods are Discrete Dipole Approximation and Finite Difference Time Domain. Micro- and nanoparticles are used in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy and other nanospectroscopic methods. Further, the main instrumentation needed for Raman spectroscopy is described. The first part of experimental section of this work is numerical modelling of photonic nanojet that occures behind dielectric microparticles. This phenomenon leads to a new technique of confocal microscopy with Raman spectra measuring. The second experimental section contains results of Raman spectra measurement with beta-carotene and surface-enhanced Raman spectra of beta-carotene in silver-sol solution.

Extensão do método das diferenças finitas para o projeto e modelagem de dispositivos ópticos utilizando meios com propriedades diversas / Finite difference method extension for the design and modeling of optical devices using materials with diverse propertiesAlcantara, Licinius Dimitri Sá de 25 March 2004 (has links)
This work introduces three improved formalisms for the analysis of electromagnetic wave propagation through materials with distinct optical properties, i.e., isotropic, anisotropic, linear, nonlinear, or any combination of them. Two finite difference approaches were extensively investigated in this work for this purpose, namely the finite difference in time domain (FDTD), and the finite difference beam propagation method (2D and 3D FD-BPM), these in frequency domain. Initially, a TM (transverse magnetic) mode propagating through a planar magnetooptic/nonlinear/linear waveguide was investigated by way of a two-dimensional formalism (FDTD and FD-BPM). This mode polarization was chosen based on the orientation of the external magnetostatic field adopted, which favored the observation of non-reciprocal and nonlinear effects simultaneously. On the other hand, it is well known that FDTD formalisms are computationally intensives. Therefore, a great effort was dedicated to its frequency domain counterpart (FD-BPM), which was implemented in two and three dimensions. The later was further extended to a fully vectorial formalism, which is capable of simulating hybrid modes or even the energy transfer between orthogonal modes. This enabled us to investigate more complex geometries, such as an optical isolator based on magnetooptic rib waveguide. Additionally, complex phenomena, such as the dynamic of light condensates in bulk nonlinear Kerr media with saturation, also known as cubic-quintic nonlinear media, were investigated for the first time with a 3D vectorial formalism. Finally, numerical methods capable of handling any combination of materials with distinct optical properties (linear and/or nonlinear and/or magnetooptic) are an extraordinary tool for the scientific community for the design of new optical devices, as well as the investigation of new physical effects aimed for optical computing, that may result in fewer and more efficient components for optical communication systems.

A Spatially-filtered Finite-difference Time-domain Method with Controllable Stability Beyond the Courant LimitChang, Chun 19 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis introduces spatial filtering, which is a technique to extend the time step size beyond the conventional stability limit for the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method, at the expense of transforming field nodes between the spatial domain and the discrete spatial-frequency domain and removing undesired spatial-frequency components at every FDTD update cycle. The spatially-filtered FDTD method is demonstrated to be almost as accurate as and more efficient than the conventional FDTD method via theories and numerical examples. Then, this thesis combines spatial filtering and an existing subgridding scheme to form the spatially-filtered subgridding scheme. The spatially-filtered subgridding scheme is more efficient than existing subgridding schemes because the former allows the time step size used in the dense mesh to be larger than the dense mesh CFL limit. However, trade-offs between accuracy and efficiency are required in complicated structures.
