Teologia da Libertação e Renovação Carismática Católica : religião e política na Arquidiocese de Londrina - PR /

Guimarães, Luiz Ernesto. January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This work analyzes the relationship between religion and politics in the Archdiocese of Londrina - PR, especially in two sectors of Catholicism that have received significant visibility in recent decades: Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) and Liberation Theology. Considered as antagonistic by many researchers, the present study analyzes how the political sphere manifests itself in some events developed within these segments, as well as, the understanding by members of the clergy and also of the faithful on the subject. Victor Turner's contribution to the rituals allows us to observe how in different moments of the religious life some aspects of daily life present themselves - politics in particular. Sherry Ortner's approach to practice is also part of the theoreticalmethodological framework of this paper, when mediating between agency and structure in the actors surveyed. To this end, the following events are highlighted: the earthly pilgrimage, the Afro Mass, the Zumbi of Palmares celebration and two prayer groups of the Charismatic Renewal: the Angels of Peace and the Walking with Mary. Among the dozens of parishes that comprise the Archdiocese of Londrina, the fieldwork was carried out mainly in the parish of Nossa Senhora dos Migrantes, which has activities under the bias of these two Catholic segments. The research also analyzes the presence of religion in the City Hall of Londrina by highlighting two city councilors: Douglas Carvalho Pereira (PTB), charismatic, and Lenir de Assis (PT), aligned with Liberation Theology. In this way, it is possible to perceive how religious adherence allows different positions in this important political space of the city. I adopt participant observation as a research technique, conducting interviews with semi-structured script and transcribed later. Informal conversations, research ... Early Catholicism and the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe

Mashero, Edward January 2020 (has links)
This study has been an analysis of the impact of Early Catholicism to the United Methodist Church. The study has employed the following exegetical approaches; social scientific criticism, historical criticism and theological comparative method. It has also used data collection methods which include the designed questionnaire and unstructured interviews. The features of Early Catholicism were elaborated namely; the fading of the Parousia hope or imminent expectation, increasing institutionalization, crystallization of faith into set forms, the preservation of apostolic traditions, formulated creeds and confessions, established worship patterns, normative Christian ethics and distinctive collection of writings. The organizational structure of the United Methodist Church was delineated. The historical background of the church was provided. The constitution of the church was outlined with the following features; general articles, organizational structure, episcopal supervision, the judiciary and the amendments of the constitution. The theological heritages of the church are highlighted namely; basic Christian affirmation, distinctive Wesleyan emphasis, justification and perfection, mission, service and nurturing. The articles of religion of the United Methodist were also elaborated namely; faith in the Holy Trinity, sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for salvation, the original sin and free will, justification of men, the sacraments, sanctification, Holy Spirit and perfection. The doctrinal standards or methods of doing theology namely; scripture, tradition, experience and reason are elaborated. Wesley believed that the living of core of the Christian faith was reviewed in scripture, illuminated by tradition, vivified in personal experience and confirmed by reason. The study also explores the mission and ministry of the church which encompasses the ministry of all Christians, servant leadership, servant ministry, call to inclusiveness, the fulfilment of ministry and methods of organizing a new church. The United Methodist is a well organized church with social principles namely; the natural world, the social creed, the nurturing, social, economic and world communities. The duties and responsibilities of pastors, bishops and district superintendents are well defined and summarised in the fourfold ministry of sacrament, word, service and order. The study also provides the administrative committees and boards of the United Methodist Church. The liturgical calendar is also elaborated namely; advent, Christmastide, epiphany, lent, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and other special Sundays. Two sacraments of the United Methodist Church are stressed, Holy Communion and baptism. The study also provides rules and regulations that deal with church property. All tittles are held in trust, the emphasis is on compliance with the law, and church’s financial books should be audited. The church has its own ways of dealing with disputes, trails and appeals through the judicial council. An evaluation of the impact of Early Catholicism to the life and ministry of the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe is provided. It was observed that the United Methodist Church adopted many features from Early Catholicism which includes its organizational structure, creeds and confessions, worship patterns and crystallization of faith into set forms. Finally, recommendations were made focusing ways to improve the organizational structure of the United Methodist Church. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / New Testament Studies / PhD / Unrestricted

Perdóname, Madre, ¿he pecado? An Investigation of Hispanic Catholics in the United States and Their Attitudes toward Women being Allowed to Enter the Priesthood

Kilgore, William S 08 1900 (has links)
Hispanic American Catholics are a growing immigrant population in the United States, with Hispanic cultures and Catholicism woven together in unique ways. This situation presents a window through which can be examined the dynamic between individualism and religiosity. Four logistic regression models were estimated utilizing data from the Pew Research Center 2013 Survey of U.S. Latinos, in order to investigate the correlates of Hispanic American Catholic support for women in the Catholic priesthood. Religious individualism (self-determination) was measured in two dimensions, while cultural individualism (acculturation) was measured in one dimension. The first three regression models test three hypotheses related to religious and cultural individualism, while the fourth model factors in all of the variables used. Findings generally supported the saliency of religious individualism over against the hierarchal dogma of the Catholic Church, but not the saliency of cultural individualism. However, findings also exposed the complexities inherent in both Catholic religiosity and acculturation among Hispanic American Catholics.

Pious citizens of the republic: Muslim and Catholic negotiations of national identity and ethical plurality in contemporary France

Ferrara, Carol 27 February 2019 (has links)
France is often described as a strongly secular or culturally Catholic country despite the internal plurality that always belied a presumed national uniformity. In recent decades, the increasingly public presence of Islam has raised concerns over the stability of French national identity and a putative common French culture. The added threat of terrorism and the rise of the far right have aggravated the challenges of plurality and the mieux vivre ensemble (living better together). Amidst these tense national debates, this dissertation provides an ethnographic comparison of pious Catholic and Muslim citizens’ experiences with plurality, public ethics, citizenship, and Frenchness. Employing ethnographic methods and a small-scale survey, I carried out research in sites of religious education, including churches, mosques, private Muslim schools, and interfaith initiatives in Paris, Lyon, and Lille, France from 2013-2014. My research showed similarly broad spectrums of piety and ethical commitments among Catholics and Muslims as well as many shared public ethical concerns. However, there was much less convergence in the framing of ethical concerns, agency in civic engagement, and experiences of French citizenship and belonging among Catholics and Muslims respectively. Moreover, in contrast to prominent social science scholarship on Islam in France, I found that Muslim exclusion from French belonging was not attributable to a single cause, such as secular Republicanism, strong religious commitments, class, race or ethnicity. Instead, this research suggests that many of these factors worked together to produce the normative aesthetic, ethical, and performative boundaries of francité. While francité literally denotes Frenchness, it indexes a complex history of national identity and belonging from late French colonialism to today. Catholics and Muslims described francité in similar terms. However, Catholics claimed to confidently embody francité, while Muslims often excluded themselves from its experience and meaning. Contributing to the scholarship on Islam in France and Europe, my research indicates that it is circumscribed notions of francité that work to exclude “Others” from French belonging, and which impinge upon otherwise inclusive possibilities of belonging under secular Republicanism. Contributing to the literature on citizenship, ethics, and the challenge of plurality, I suggest that scholars need to disentangle juridico-legal citizenship, secular Republicanism, and francité in order to better analyze the challenges of French citizenship and the effort to mieux vivre ensemble. / 2021-02-27T00:00:00Z

"Common Plowmen's Children": The Frontiers of Ulster Catholicism, c.1680-c.1830

Crogg, Tyler 01 December 2009 (has links)
The dissertation argues that Ulster Catholic laity inhabited a social and cultural "frontier" through the early modern period. This mentality shaped how Ulster Catholics perceived and conceived their place and community in the rapidly changing religious, socio-economic and political situation in early modern Ulster (c.1680-1830). Though sectarian attitudes and violence are viewed as inherent in Ulster and Irish history generally, this dissertation explores the social and cultural connections between Ulster Catholics and Anglo-Scot Protestant settlers, and the social and cultural world of Ulster Catholics and Catholic converts. By examining several locales and specific Catholic families in the province, a nuanced portrait of interdenominational relationships and Catholic culture and society is forwarded. Additionally, the concerns of daily life and social connections are explored to register the amount of adaptation or resistance to the changing socio-economic and political conditions in Ulster. Moreover, the attempted Tridentine reforms of Ulster Catholic practice by the Catholic upper clergy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was another "frontier" that was alternately adapted and resisted by the Ulster Catholic laity. Analysis of Catholic diocesan letters, Gaelic poetry and songs, family and estate papers, official state papers, and other contemporary works demonstrates the complexities of local interdenominational relationships and the diverse constructions of a "Catholic community" early modern Ulster.

Journeying to God in Communion with the Other: A Comparative Theological Study of the Muslim and Catholic Pilgrimage Traditions in South Central Java and Their Contributions to the Catholic Theology of Communio Sanctorum

Laksana, Albertus Bagus January 2011 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James W. Morris / This dissertation is a comparative phenomenological and theological analysis on Catholic and Muslim traditions of pilgrimage to sacred tombs and shrines in south central Java, Indonesia. Both in the Muslim and Christian traditions, pilgrimage is a rich and complex religious practice that has served as a privileged milieu in which pilgrims and their communities attempt to foster diverse kinds of communion with God and His spiritual company of saints and other sacred figures, including the founders and paradigmatic ancestors of the local community. Precisely due to its richness and complexity as a spiritual and religio-cultural practice driven by the deeper and inclusive dynamics of communion, pilgrimage has also become a crucial practice in which a distinctive and hybrid religio-cultural identity is forged and negotiated in creative and fruitful ways--among others through the process of engaging various forms of otherness including other religious traditions and cultures--in the context of a long historical continuum that is also marked by tensions and ambiguities. Based on the underlying and multifaceted category of communion with God, the self, and the other that lies at the heart of the pilgrimage traditions in Islam and Catholicism, and guided by the method of the new comparative theology, this study attempts to offer a focused analysis of the major ways in which this dynamic of communion is played out in the deeper shared features and intimate encounters that exist between these two pilgrimage traditions in south central Java. Carried out from the perspective of the Catholic tradition, this study also seeks to explore the ways in which the extraordinary depth and breadth of these dynamics of communion in the Muslim and Catholic pilgrimage traditions--that in Catholic theology can be placed under the inclusive category of the work of the Spirit (pneumatology)--can serve as a creative avenue for a comparative theological enrichment of our contemporary understanding of the Catholic doctrine and practice of communio sanctorum ("communion of saints and the holy"). Drawing from both the most salient features of both the Muslim and Catholic pilgrimage practices in south central Java as well as the corresponding insights from the larger Islamic and Catholic traditions, this proposed pneumatological framework for a renewed understanding of the Catholic theology of communio sanctorum can be seen as the modest constructive fruit of this study's comparative theological engagement with the dynamics of pilgrimage in these two traditions. Through this process, the Catholic theology and practice of communio sanctorum is also made more richly anchored in the Catholic principles of communion, mediation, and sacramentality. And since this very process includes other religious tradition(s), the Catholic doctrine of communio sanctorum becomes remarkably inclusive and expansive as well, thus becoming a profoundly "catholic" theological vision. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College.
