Barriers towards a successful adoption of PSS: A Provider and Customer Perspective

With the arising digital disruption and global market pressures, several manufacturing companies have recognized the strategic integration of services as a way to competitive advantage and corporate profitability, they therefore have the desire to differentiate themselves by creating new service-oriented strategies, namely Product-Service Systems (PSS). While transforming towards a PSS provider there are a number of barriers that the organization has to overcome. After an extensive literature review the authors identified 34 such barriers. Tukker (2015) argues that the number of successful adoptions of PSS among manufacturing firms is surprisingly low, despite an increased literature awareness and focus on the barriers. The identified barriers are most often seen through the manufacturers’ perspective and little is mentioned about the customers’ perspective on barriers. The gap that was identified in the literature was the lack of customers’ perspective upon these barriers. This thesis aims to investigate the perceived barriers from both the customers’- and the provider’s perspective, and to examine which barriers the provider should emphasize to have the highest potential to successfully transform into a PSS provider. We used Bosch Rexroth as a focal firm and conducted in total 29 interviews with them and their customers and a workshop with 11 participants from the provider. The data from the provider and the customers were separately analysed until the last step, where it generated a barrier spheres. The spheres were used as a foundation for the emerging framework. The framework’s step wise approach is a guideline for manufacturing firms in their efforts to overcome the barriers in order to successfully adopt PSS. This thesis is a first contribution towards shredding light upon the customers’ perspective of barriers towards PSS. Our research shows that one perspective of these barriers is insufficient, since PSS involves both the provider and the customers it should thereby include both perspectives. The managerial implications of this thesis is partly the framework but also the importance for a provider to work closely to their customers and build strong relationships in order to overcome to barriers towards PSS together.

The goal of the master thesis is to conduct strategic analysis of an enterprise Soma spol. s r.o. and suggest possible recommendation for further development based on the knowledge acquired from the analysis. Theoretical part is focused on information referring to the topic of the thesis. Method and techniques of the strategic analysis are described and afterwards applied in the practical part. Practical section contains environment analysis using PESTEL analysis and Porter's Five Forces analysis. Onward the internal analysis is performed including identification of company's assets, financial analysis, Value Chain analysis and Portfolio analysis. In conclusion the results of all performed analysis are summarized using the SWOT matrix and the recommendation are suggested based on detected opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of the company.

O ambiente mais competitivo e complexo gera um momento de incertezas para os gestores, os quais buscam readequar suas unidades, estimulados pelo desafio de garantir a sobrevivência das instituições. Nesse contexto, os gestores devem adequar suas práticas de gestão, com a finalidade de tornar as empresas de serviço em saúde mais comerciais, capazes de atender as demandas da sociedade e gerar vantagem competitiva superior aos seus concorrentes. Sendo assim, este estudo visa a responder a seguinte pergunta problema: no atual contexto, que práticas de gestão levam as empresas de serviço em saúde a obter vantagem competitiva através da utilização eficiente de seus recursos? Para responder a pergunta, foi utilizada a teoria de Resource-based view como base conceitual para identificar os recursos que geram valor para as organizações e como eles são geridos. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, pois se propõe a apresentar características relevantes do setor focalizado. Caracteriza-se também como uma pesquisa qualitativa, pois se baseia em percepções subjetivas de participantes do setor analisado sobre determinados eventos ou situações. Os sujeitos da pesquisa são gestores ou pessoas que ocupam cargos estratégicos em alguns dos principais hospitais e clínicas privados da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Foram entrevistados quinze indivíduos com este perfil. Além de outros aspectos, os resultados ressaltam a afiliação a uma rede verticalizada associada a um plano de saúde e à gestão da rede de unidade coligadas como elementos que representam vantagem competitiva para algumas empresas do setor. Outros fatores que se mostram relevantes são os ganhos de escala produzidos por meio de uma gestão mais eficiente dos recursos físicos e da maior quantidade e rotatividade de ocupação dos leitos. Aspectos como a qualidade da hotelaria e a diversificação de convênios foram identificados como requisitos de paridade competitiva. Fatores ligados à tecnologia e a sistemas de aquisição se mostraram como fontes de vantagem temporária. / [en] Health market in Rio de Janeiro is in transformation. The more competitive and complex situation generates a moment of uncertainties for managers, who search to readapt their units, stimulated by the challenge of guaranteeing the survival of the institutions. In this context, managers must adapt their management practices with the purpose of turning the health service companies more efficient, capable to fulfill society`s demands and produce a competitive advantage better than the one provided by its competitors. Therefore, this study aims at answering the following question: in the present context, which management practices would lead health service companies to obtain a competitive advantage through the efficient use of its own resources? In order to answer this question, was used the Resource-based view theory as a conceptual base for identifying the resources that generate value to the organizations and how they are managed. It is a descriptive study, since it proposes to present relevant characteristics of such health sector. It may also be characterized as a qualitative research, since it is based on subjective perceptions by members of the analyzed sector over certain events or situations. Research subjects are managers or persons occupying strategic positions in some of the major private hospital and clinics in Rio de Janeiro City. Fifteen persons with this profile have been interviewed. In addition to other aspects, results point out the affiliation to a verticalized network associated to a health plan and the management of the connected unit network, as elements representing a competitive advantage for some companies of the sector. Other relevant factors are the scale gains produced through a more efficient management of the physical resources and through a greater quantity and rotation of beds occupancy. Aspects such as hotel quality and diversification of health plans were identified as requirements for a competitive parity. Factors connected to technology and acquisition systems have shown themselves as sources of temporary advantage.

Competitividade em clusters de alta tecnologia: estudo comparativo de clusters de ciências da saúde no Brasil e na Inglaterra / Competitiveness in high-tech clusters: comparative study of health sciences cluster in Brazil and in England

Este trabalho teve como objetivo desenvolver um modelo específico para analisar a competitividade de clusters de alta tecnologia. Foi realizado um estudo de casos múltiplos em que foram analisados os clusters de ciências da saúde de Ribeirão Preto, no Brasil, e de Oxfordshire, na Inglaterra. Coletaram-se dados primários e secundários. Os dados primários foram coletados por meio de entrevistas em ambos os clusters e os dados secundários por meio de relatórios, papers, websites, além de coleta realizada nos bancos de dados Fame e Orbis. O modelo Zaccarelli et al. (2008), utilizado como ponto de partida para o desenvolvimento do modelo, foi aprimorado de três maneiras: i. Por meio do ajustamento das métricas utilizadas para avaliar cada fundamento, o que incluiu, dentre outras coisas, uma adaptação do modelo para mapeamento de clusters desenvolvido por Todeva (2008); ii. Pela verificação da aderência de seus fundamentos aos clusters de alta tecnologia analisados; e iii. Pela identificação de fatores emergentes, importantes para competitividade de clusters de alta tecnologia. Os resultados mostram evidências de que entre os onze fundamentos do modelo original, nove se mostraram relevantes aos clusters de alta tecnologia, ratificando sua importância para a análise da competitividade de clusters. Além dos fundamentos originais, os resultados sugerem a inclusão de dois fundamentos emergentes: \"Inserção em cadeias globais\" e \"Disponibilidade de investimentos financeiros\", até então ignorados pelo modelo Zaccarelli et al. (2008). A pesquisa traz como contribuição teórica o desenvolvimento de um modelo específico para clusters de alta tecnologia; como contribuição metodológica as novas métricas, incluindo a incorporação da adaptação da metodologia de Todeva (2008); como contribuição empírica traz a comparação entre clusters de ciências da saúde reconhecidamente competitivos, mas pertencentes a países de realidades culturais e econômicas distintas; e como contribuição gerencial um modelo que pode ser utilizado por empresários e instituições pertencentes a clusters e que desejam analisar fatores que influenciam a sua competitividade. / This study aimed to develop a specific model to analyze the competitiveness of high technology clusters. Multiple case studies were performed in which were analyzed health science clusters at Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, and Oxfordshire, England. Primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data was collected through interviews in both clusters and secondary data were collected through reports, papers, websites in addition to data collection conducted in the database Fame and Orbis. The model Zaccarelli et al. (2008), tooked as the starting point this work, was improved in three ways: i. By adjusting the metrics used to evaluate each factor, which included, among other things, an adaptation of the cluster map methodology developed by Todeva (2008); ii. By the examination of adherence of its factors at the high-tech clusters analyzed; and iii. By the identification of emerging factors which are important for competitiveness of high-tech clusters. The results show evidence that among the eleven factors of the original model, nine were considered relevant to high-tech clusters, confirming its importance for the analysis of competitiveness of clusters. In addition to the original factors, the results suggest the inclusion of two emerging factors: \"Insertion at global value chains\" and \"Availability of financial investments\", until then ignored by the model Zaccarelli et al. (2008). The research brings as theoretical contribution the development of a specific model for high-tech clusters; as methodological contribution the new metrics, including the incorporation of the adaptation of Todeva\'s methodology (2008); as empirical contribution brings the comparison between the health sciences clusters notoriously competitive but belonging to countries of different cultural and economic realities; and as a management contribution a model that can be used by entrepreneurs and institutions that belong to clusters and who wish to analyze factors that influence their competitiveness.

[pt] O outsourcing vem crescendo como uma modalidade de negócios no Brasil ao longo da última década. Inicialmente concentrado nas funções de tecnologia da informação, logo se expandiu para a indústria de telecomunicações, após a privatização das operadoras de telefonia em 1998. No entanto, apesar dos grandes negócios realizados nos últimos 4 anos, e de sua implementação continuar sendo considerada complexa e de alto risco, há indicadores que apontam para uma forte tendência de crescimento desta prática no país ao longo dos próximos anos. A inserção do outsourcing num contexto estratégico, tratando- o como uma espécie de aliança estratégica, buscaria obter, então, não só melhores resultados referentes à sua implementação, mas também a construção de vantagens competitivas sustentáveis para ambas as partes envolvidas. O objetivo principal desta tese foi o de desenvolver um arcabouço analítico que pudesse auxiliar na implementação eficaz do outsourcing de funções críticas pelas empresas atuantes no país. Para tanto, iniciou-se a pesquisa por meio do desenvolvimento de sua fundamentação teórica, a qual buscou endereçar a conceituação do outsourcing, as implicações decorrentes de sua implementação e a sua categorização como um tipo de aliança estratégia. Depois de apresentada a fundamentação teórica, foi criada uma proposta de tipologia para o outsourcing, que, juntamente com os métodos selecionados para a pesquisa, serviu de base para a realização das fases subseqüentes da tese. Por fim, foi proposto um arcabouço, estruturado na forma de passos, para auxiliar a implementação do outsourcing de funções críticas, inserindo-o num contexto estratégico de forma a possibilitar a busca por vantagens competitivas sustentáveis. Novamente um novo estudo de caso foi apresentado, desta vez com o propósito de avaliar, preliminarmente, a possibilidade de utilização do arcabouço em um caso real de outsourcing dentro de um contexto estratégico. Os resultados obtidos por esta avaliação, e sustentados pelas atividades realizadas anteriormente, permitiram a contribuição desta tese tanto no campo acadêmico quanto na prática gerencial, tratando primeiramente o outsourcing como um meio para a formação de alianças estratégicas e fornecendo, para a prática gerencial, um arcabouço para orientar sua implementação de forma a se obter melhores resultados e a se buscar desenvolver vantagens competitivas sustentáveis. / [en] Outsourcing has been growing as a mode of business in Brazil over the past decade. Initially concentrated in information technology functions, it soon expanded to the telecommunications industry following the privatization of telephony operators in 1998. However, in spite of the major business that have been closed over the past 4 years, and the fact that their implementation continues to be considered a complex, high-risk operation, there are indicators pointing to a strong trend towards growth in this activity over the next few years in Brazil. The insertion of outsourcing in a strategic context in which it is treated as a kind of strategic alliance would therefore seek not only better results concerning its implementation, but also the construction of sustainable competitive edges for both of the parties concerned.The main purposes of this thesis was to develop an analytical framework that can help companies operating in Brazil effectively outsource critical functions. Therefore, the research started from the development of its theoretical basis, which sought to address the definition of the outsourcing concept, the implications of its implementation, and its categorization as a kind of strategic alliance. Upon introduction of the theoretical basis, an outsourcing typology was proposed which, together with the selected research methods, served as a basis for the subsequent stages of the thesis.In conclusion, a framework was proposed in a step-by-step structure to assist in the outsourcing of critical functions, inserting it into a strategic context so as to allow sustainable competitive edges to be sought. A new study case was presented, this time for the purpose to preliminarily evaluate the possibility of using the framework in an actual outsourcing case within a strategic context. The results obtained from this evolution and supported by the activities that were previously conducted allowed this thesis to contribute to both the academic area and the managerial practice, treating outsourcing firstly as a means to form strategic alliances, and providing the managerial practice with a framework to guide its implementation in such a manner as to get better results and seek to develop sustainable competitive edges.

O cenário de competição empresarial exige das empresas diversas posturas diferenciadoras, dentre estas, posturas que sejam capazes de desenvolver vantagens competitivas sustentáveis. Como resultado de sua busca pela competitividade, as empresas procuram desenvolver suas competências essenciais por meio das pessoas que a compõe. Dentre as formas de desenvolvimento organizacional, solidificou-se a realização de treinamentos no ambiente das corporações. O pensamento científico relacionado ao tema, observa a necessidade de que o treinamento esteja alinhado às estratégias da empresa e que seja capaz de produzir resultados. Surge a necessidade de se avaliar sistematicamente o treinamento e em especial seus resultados. Com o objetivo de delinear as características particulares do fenômeno, este estudo analisou as dimensões qualitativas de um programa de treinamento o MBA (Master in Business Administration) Gestão Pública realizado no Banco do Brasil. A metodologia utilizada foi o estudo de caso, valendo-se da realização de grupos focais, de entrevistas semiestruturadas e de análise de dados secundários para a obtenção de evidências que ofereceram elementos de análise do treinamento realizado. Conclui-se que o programa produziu resultados no contexto da Diretoria de Governo do Banco do Brasil, tendo atingido os objetivos de proposição do treinamento. Foram estudados quatro modelos de avalaição de treinamento, tendo sido defindo o Modelo MAIS como adequado para explorar o curso estudado. A avaliação de treinamento delineou o quanto o programa atendeu ao modelo, tendo sido observada a presença maioria dos parâmetros e ausência de alguns outros. Observou-se resultados objetivos do curso, como o planejamento de produtos e o dimensionamento de estratégias organizacionais. Muitos dos resultados observados encontram-se no contexto de outras ações organizacionais da Diretoria estudada e não podem ser apontados como resultado do treinamento, por outro lado o treinamento é apontado como um dos elementos de contexto que contribuíram com este resultado. Foram identificados ainda resultados que podem ser classificados como fonte de Vantagem Competitiva Sustentável da Diretoria de Governo do Banco do Brasil e que estão associados ao programa MBA Gestão Pública. / The competitive business environment demands differentiation postures from every company, especially, postures that are capable to develop sustainable competitive advantages. In consequence of their search for competitiveness, companies look for developing their essential abilities through the people who compose it. Amongst different forms of organizational development, training becomes a frequent practice in companies environment. The scientific thought related to the subject emphasizes a necessity of alignment between training and companies strategies, and the capability of producing results. Systematic evaluation of the training and especially its results becomes necessary. In order to delineate the particular characteristics of the phenomenon, this study analyzed qualitative dimensions of a training program called MBA Public Management implemented at Banco do Brasil. The methodology was a case study, based on focus groups, half-structuralized interviews, and secondary data analysis to attain evidences that offered analysis elements of the studied training. It is concluded that the program produced results in the context of the Government Board of the Banco do Brasil, and reached the proposal objectives of the training. Four models of evaluation of training had been studied, and the Model MAIS was considered adjusted to explore the studied course. The training evaluation delineated how much of the model was attended by the program it was observed the presence of the majority of the parameters and absence of some others. It was also observed objective results of the course, for instance the planning of products and the sizing of organizational strategies. There were many of the observed results, which are related to other organizational actions of the studied Board, and they cannot be pointed as resulted from the training. However, the training is pointed as one of the context elements that had contributed with these results. It was also identified results that can be classified as sources of Sustainable Competitive Advantage of the Government Board of the Banco do Brasil, which are associated to MBA Public Management program.
