A Comparison of Some Continuity Corrections for the Chi-Squared Test in 3 x 3, 3 x 4, and 3 x 5 Tables

Mullen, Jerry D. (Jerry Davis) 05 1900 (has links)
This study was designed to determine whether chis-quared based tests for independence give reliable estimates (as compared to the exact values provided by Fisher's exact probabilities test) of the probability of a relationship between the variables in 3 X 3, 3 X 4 , and 3 X 5 contingency tables when the sample size is 10, 20, or 30. In addition to the classical (uncorrected) chi-squared test, four methods for continuity correction were compared to Fisher's exact probabilities test. The four methods were Yates' correction, two corrections attributed to Cochran, and Mantel's correction. The study was modeled after a similar comparison conducted on 2 X 2 contingency tables and published by Michael Haber.

Integrability, Measurability, and Summability of Certain Set Functions

Dawson, Dan Paul 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the integrability, measurability, and summability of certain set functions. The paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter contains basic definitions and preliminary remarks about set functions and absolute continuity. In Chapter i, the integrability of bounded set functions is investigated. The chapter culminates with a theorem that characterizes the transmission of the integrability of a real function of n bounded set functions. In Chapter III, measurability is defined and a characterization of the transmission of measurability by a function of n variables is provided, In Chapter IV, summability is defined and the summability of set functions is investigated, Included is a characterization of the transmission of summability by a function of n variables.

A persistence of place : a study of continuity and regionality in the Roman and early medieval rural settlement patterns of Norfolk, Kent and Somerset

Fleming, Fiona Jane January 2013 (has links)
The debate over the continuity, or discontinuity, of the late Roman settlement landscape has reigned long over studies of settlement and landscape transition between the Roman and early medieval periods. Traditionally, these studies have been confined to their period of research, typically taking a site-based perspective and neglecting the wider social and physical context. Since the development of ‘landscape archaeology’, the importance of the wider physical and social landscape, both as a source of evidence in its own right and the arena in which the processes of settlement change during the Roman and early medieval periods took place, has come to the forefront of settlement and landscape studies for these periods. Much of the research, however, remains qualitative in nature, rich in contextualisation and historical reflection, but lacking in systematic and spatial analysis. This thesis addresses that gap through a broad-scale, quantitative, study of Roman and early medieval settlement, to determine how far patterns of late Roman settlement appear to continue into the 5th to 11th centuries, and to what extent they influenced settlement processes during that period. The results have been systematically assessed across a range of distinctive and adjacent character regions, or pays, over three regional study areas, Norfolk, Kent and Somerset, to determine whether trends in Roman and early medieval settlement relationships, relative to their physical landscape context, demonstrate regional, or sub-regional, variation. The results reinforce the current understanding of settlement processes for these two periods: that the river valleys were predominantly the favoured areas for Roman settlement, particularly higher status Roman settlement, and that the lighter valley soils potentially saw a greater stability and continuity of settlement during the 5th to 11th centuries. This contrasts with the heavier clay soils and interfluvial areas which more typically saw lower status Roman occupation and were more prone to phases of settlement contraction and expansion during the 5th to 11th centuries. This rather simplistic distinction between areas of potential ‘continuity’ and ‘discontinuity’, however, inevitably embraces more nuanced variation in Roman and early medieval settlement relationships at a regional and sub regional level, as demonstrated in the individual discussion for each study area through the concept of ‘pays’.

Therapist (Dis)Continuity, Therapeutic Relationship, and (Premature) Termination in a Psychology Training Clinic

Al-Jabari, Rawya M. 08 1900 (has links)
Premature termination is a substantial problem with significant adverse effects for clients, therapists, and treatment organizations. Unfortunately, it is also a relatively common phenomenon within mental healthcare settings. Across varied mental healthcare settings, rates of premature termination have reportedly ranged from 19.7 % to 40 %. Perhaps not surprisingly, the rate of premature termination in training clinics is substantially higher than in community mental health settings and private practice, with 75 to 80 % of clients ending treatment services prematurely. The purpose of this study was to explore the combined effect of intake therapist continuity or discontinuity, and quality of the therapeutic relationship on premature termination. Intake therapist continuity, measures of working alliance, and termination outcome from 524 clients at the University of North Texas Psychology Clinic were utilized for adults receiving individual therapy services between August 2008 and August 2013. Results of the study suggest intake therapist continuity did not predict subjective termination status (X2(2, n = 524) = 1.61, p = 0.45), nor did it predict change in symptomology status (X2(3, n = 453) = 1.14, p = 0.77). Additionally, working alliance predicted subjective termination status (X2(6, n = 212) = 21.17, p < 0.01), but not change in symptomology status (X2(9, n = 208) = 6.27, p = 0.71). The findings of the current study are discussed, as well as suggestions for further research related to client, therapist, treatment, and procedural variables and their impact on premature termination.

K problematice času / To the problem of time

Zlatoš, Michal January 2016 (has links)
The thesis "To the problem of time" considers concepts of understanding of the problem of time and temporality on selected authors throughout history. It was revealed in the work that even Aristotle had some notion of temporality, and not only his time counted within movement. However this notion is fragmental thus it required a more complex explanation of his viewpoints. Augustine's switch of perspective brought deeper understanding of human temporality within the connection of the soul to the transcendental God. Further development of this idea made Husserl's analysis of time-consciousness and after him Heidegger, who developed Husserl's concept and founded his own concept on the authenticity based on the consciousness of individual being's irreversible finiteness. Similarly, the concepts of Bergson and Sartre developed the idea of time consciousness, though they differed on some stresses, e.g. the importance of the future. Peirce's position, brought into discussion, showed some similar features despite the different origins to the concept of Husserl's. The cross-section of science and philosophy exposed in Whitehead's concept pointed out the introduction of an observer into the scientific understanding of time and thus denial of the "absolute time" on behalf of dynamicity of the continual...

Literacy in students fron 2nd year to 6th year with the Alouette test : how is the level for forty years? : how chidren learn to read (continuously/discontinuously)?

Izard, Amélie 02 October 2013 (has links)
The fall of the level of ability in literacy has often been brought to public attention, so we used the Alouette test (Lefavrais, 1967) to make a comparative study on the levels of literacy in students aged from 2nd year to 6th year. The study indicates that in forty years the level of literacy in students has reduced by six months. In addition to this decline, there also appeared to be widening gaps between the two extremes of ability. Those who experience the most difficulty become disengaged whereas those with the highest level of ability take off. As the Alouette test is based on the traditional concept of literacy, this allowed us to test the other dominant developmental theories. In this way we were able to question whether the Alouette test could tell us about the process in which children learn how to read whether continuously or discontinuously. The results seem to show that the tendency is for the discontinuity, but not entirely. Hence, as soon as children learn to read they would use a lexical process in addition to using phonological mediation, both being dominant at different times during their education.

Business continuity management for an agribusiness company: a case study from west Africa

Mouphtaou, Tene January 1900 (has links)
Master of Agribusiness / Department of Agricultural Economics / Vincent Amanor-Boadu / The overall objective of this research is to develop a business continuity plan for a relatively large livestock company located in Francophone West Africa. This is very important in an environment when both internal and external risks can lead to significant disruptions in the business processes. The research, thus, focuses on developing a process that can be applied to establish a business continuity management process in this firm and provides the framework for implementing such a plan successfully. The livestock company, let us call it Livestock Co. to protect its identity, wants to define strategies for recovery, resumption of business and other key activities under the potential scenarios. Its managers desire to formulate crisis response strategies that would be implemented quickly when these disasters hit. The thesis envisages the potential conditions that may trigger these crises and develops the management systems to mitigate them, returning the business to it activities as quickly as possible. Some of the natural disasters that may be considered are fire, accidents and political upheavals. Some technical disasters that may be imagined may be related to infrastructure, labor crisis, and grain dust explosions. Unlike natural disasters, which often are uncertain, technical disasters can be predicted based on careful assessment of the environment or the assets. The research evaluates the process for developing a business continuity management plan and offers an implementation process to ensure its smooth execution.

Silveira, Danilo 26 September 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is constructed as a result of an investigation about how the act of \"insistence\" in creation in dance can be made. For that, the discussion about insistence is developed aiming at the creative process of the dance spetacle Corpo Desconhecido, interpreted by the dancer and choreographer Cinthia Kunifas. Between rehearsals and presentations, the spetacle focused here lasted for twelve years, and in this continuous and non-urgent time, Kunifas insistently remained in a same way of being and living the scene from an original matter. Therefore, to develop an argument about \"insistence\" in creation in dance, the text is based on Jorge de Albuquerque Vieira\'s (2000 and 2006) and Adriana Bitencourt Machado\'s (2001 and 2005) theoretical contributions, authors who study the concept of \"permanence\" from the General Theory of Systems. Another reference brought to the argumentation is the understanding about the creation process approached by Cecília Almeida Salles (2006 and 2011). Finally, the discourse of this text is based on such references aiming to think \"insistence\" as a survival strategy and as a state of continuous existence that can lead the artist to deepen his original question without being in a hurry to make something happen.

Conjuntos de continuidade seqüencial fraca para polinômios em espaços de Banach / Sets of weak sequential continuity for polynomials in Banach spaces

Kaufmann, Pedro Levit 03 December 2004 (has links)
Mathem., N.S., 13 (3) (2002), 287-299. / This work has the purpose of presenting a study on Banach spaces about sets in which determined homogeneous continuous polynomials are weakly sequentially continuous. Some properties of these sets are studied and illustrated with examples, most in the space $l_p$. We obtain a formula for the weak sequential continuity set of the product of two polynomials, and some consequences. Stronger results are obtained when we restrict our Banach spaces to spaces with unconditional FDD and/or separable. The results studied here were obtained by R. Aron and V. Dimant in: Aron, R. & Dimant, V., {Sets of weak sequential continuity for polynomials, Indag. Mathem., N.S., 13 (3) (2002), 287-299.
