[en] The main objective of this research was to analyze the vulnerability, stress and social support in couples of families from communities affected by natural disasters in Mozambique, focusing on the Savane resettlement center. The theoretical basis was supported by Brofenbrenner s bio-ecological approach, which argues that the environment influences individuals and is influenced by them, also considering that the bio-ecological being is in a dialectical relationship with the psychological and the social, and no phenomenon can be understood in isolation. We also approached the line of psychopathologies of LaCapra (2004) and other authors, showing that, due to socioeconomic vulnerability, many of the couples experienced psychological violence that caused trauma and depression. The research is qualitative and quantitative, descriptive and exploratory. Forty couples with and without children from the Savane resettlement center participated in the study. A semi-structured script interview was conducted in which we sought to understand the level of (psychological) stress, coping strategies, resilience, and psychological consequences derived from the effects of natural disasters. The sociodemographic questionnaires were simultaneously applied to explore vulnerability (social and geographical) based on family income, place of residence, age, gender, profession, and level of education of the couples; and the social support questionnaire (SSQ) of Sarason, Levine, Basham, and Sarason (1983), Portuguese version by Matsukura, Marturano, and Oish (2002), to assess the level of satisfaction with social support (perceived and received). The content analysis of the interviews was performed from the frequency of words presented in the participants speech by the IraMuTeQ software (Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires) and in the quantitative analysis, the resources of the statistical software SPSS (Statiscal Package for Social Science) version 21 were used. The results indicated that these families experienced long-term reactions, conditioned to psychopathological problems that consequently influenced their way of life. It was highlighted that ongoing severe trauma can lead to significant impairment in emotion and behavior regulation and can directly impact how couples perceive themselves and their worldview. It was assumed that the lack of social support can influence vulnerability and the development of stress in couples. Overall, it is concluded that these families being disadvantaged had high rates of all disorders found after the IDAI, including post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, and panic disorder. Continued psychological intervention and follow-up is urgently proposed for this special group. However, the need for interventions to take into account culture and context is stressed, because what is diagnosed as pathological can vary widely across cultures.

Maybe, eventually, I'll be allowed to be a parent to my own child

Sarelid, Camilla, Henrikson, Malin January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to examine how same-sex couples experience the second-parent adoption process. To assist us, we have used our questions: how do the couples describe their experiences of the adoption process? Which are the couples’ stories about the experience of contact with the involved professionals? What are the opportunities and barriers for same-sex couples to start a family? How do the couples describe their experience of reactions from the community and society, and how do they think the future will look like for same-sex couples? This study has been achieved through a qualitative approach. The empirical data is based on seven semi-structured interviews with same-sex couples or pair members that want to or have had a second-parent adoption. The theory we have used for analyzing the results is phenomenology with focus on queer theory, heteronormativity, and power. We conclude that the couples’ experiences of the second-parent adoption process is that it is a long, time-consuming, and emotionally consuming process. They question why they have to go through with an adoption process. The couples think of it only as a legal security to their child. They have experienced varying treatment in the contact with professionals. The course of action has been different for all our seven couples: home insemination in Sweden, insemination at clinic in Denmark, and surrogacy in India. One clear result is that it is more difficult for gay men to start a family than for lesbians. The couples have mostly received positive responses and a lot of support from their surroundings. Despite that, they are worried about the negative view of homosexuality that is increasing in the world.

Aktivitetsbalans för par : En intervjustudie med familjerådgivare / Occupational balance for couples: an interview study with  family counselers

Haskovec Aronsson, Camilla, Löwenham, Martina January 2023 (has links)
Title: Occupational balance for couples: an interview study with family counselers Introduction: Occupational balance is a concept in occupational therapy, meaningyou have an even distribution between what you want to do and what you need to do. The authors ask themselves the question whether it is possible to work with a person's occupational balance without including the partner's occupational balance. Family counselors is used to working with couples as a whole, that’s why the authors want to find out how they work with occupational balance based on their professional competence. Aim: The aim of the thesis was to highlight how family counselers work with occupational balance together with couples. Method: The study design is descriptive with an inductive approach. A purposive sampling – typical selection and snow ball sampling was used when searching for family counselors on municipal and church websites. The informants were both women and men from all over Sweden and with professional experience of 20–40 years. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection and were transcribed and analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Results: The categories The couples occupational balance is identified together, With tools and method and With change and renewal were identified together with six subcategories. Couples Sharing Recovery from a Husband's Addiction to Pornography: A Qualitative Study

Zitzman, Spencer T. 23 June 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This study evaluated the therapy process for married couples recovering from addictive use of pornography. The author's proposal was that in conjoint couple therapy, clinicians are able to help organize the relationship to sponsor recovery while helping both members of the relationship heal individually. The prevalence and effects of pornography are discussed through a review of the current literature. Six couples were interviewed following the termination of their treatment in marital therapy to gain a holistic view of the process of recovery and gain groundwork for future development of a concise model of treatment. Results demonstrated that an increase in understanding of each other's position in the sexual addiction and recovery process (i.e., emotional, cognitive and behavioral) increases a) marital trust and faith in the future, b) softening towards each other, c) the ability to discern key points of intervention in helping the other spouse during recovery, and d) client-perceived marital enhancement. These preliminary findings suggest that couples perceive that conjoint marital therapy is a useful component in treating addiction to pornography.

A Qualitative Study of the Supports Women Find Most Beneficial When Dealing With A Spouse's Sexually Addictive or Compulsive Behaviors

Manning, Jill Christine 08 February 2006 (has links) (PDF)
While not included in the diagnostic classifications of sexual disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), sexual addictions and compulsivities are increasingly being encountered by mental health professionals, and the field of sexual addictions is gaining wider acceptance (Delmonico & Carnes, 1999; Garos, 1997). Research shows the majority of people struggling with sexual addictions and compulsivities involving the Internet are married, heterosexual males (Cooper, Delmonico, & Burg, 2000), and that women who are married to these men are directly impacted by this problem (Schneider, 2000b). Although there is research on many issues relating to wives of sex addicts, there is currently a void in the research literature regarding the kinds of support women find most beneficial when dealing with a spouse's sexually addictive or compulsive behaviors. The primary purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the kinds of support women find most beneficial when dealing with a spouse's sexually addictive and compulsive behaviors. Using grounded theory methodology (Strauss & Corbin, 1990), twenty-two women from Canada and the United States were interviewed to find out what they found most helpful as they sought support to cope with a spouse's sexually addictive and compulsive behaviors. A theory of support for this population emerged from the data. It was found that women in affected marriages utilize two main categories of support, namely, coping supports, and change-oriented supports such as Recreational, Relational, Professional, Spiritual and Conceptual. Responding to problematic sexual behavior is moderated by numerous internal and external factors. Five common factors of positive support experiences were identified across the sample. These five common factors were: (a) Connection, (b) Advocacy, (c) Validation, (d) Education, and (e) Direction (CAVED). This study did not succeed in identifying distinct pathways of support for women who discover this problem versus those who have it disclosed to them, nor did this study identify specific treatment modalities that are effective. The results of this study provide a useful template for clinicians, support networks and researchers to begin understanding what is helpful and unhelpful when working with this population.

Sacrifice in Marriage: Motives, Behaviors, and Outcomes

Figuerres, Kevin Shitamoto 20 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Today's society appears to have become focused on the individual and his/her exclusive needs in relationships. Self-sacrifice has seemingly become a forgotten value and behavior. The motives for sacrificing for another can widely vary for each individual. This study examined the effects of couples' sacrificing behaviors and the motives for sacrificing on the couples' marital quality. In this research, a random sample of 138 couples from Oakland, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Ogden, UT; and Atlanta, GA were assessed on these variables using the Self Perception of Sacrifice, Partner Perception of Sacrifice, Motives for Sacrifice, Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships measures. Analyzing the data with structural equation modeling showed that approach and avoidance motives for sacrifice were related to the individual's marital quality. The approach motives were also related to the individual's actual frequency of sacrificing, but only wives' avoidance motives were a predictor of her frequency in sacrificing. Husband's sacrificing frequency was a strong predictor of his own marital quality and also his wife's. The wife's frequency of sacrificing was also connected with her and his marital quality, but was not as strong of a predictor as his frequency of sacrificing. In examining the partner effects, only wives' approach and avoidance motives had an effect upon their husband's marital quality. Husband's approach and avoidance motives were not related to his wife's marital quality; rather, the husband's actual frequency of sacrifice and the wife's perception of his sacrificing influenced her marital quality. Husbands' and wives' approach motives were associated with their partner's frequency of sacrifice, but their avoidance motives were not significant predictors of their partner's frequency of sacrifice. Clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.
