Etude des désintégrations sans charme Bº d,s → h+h′−πº decays dans LHCb / Study of charmless Bº d,s → h+h′−πº decays in LHCb

Roa Romero, Diego Alejandro 24 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis work is about the identification of charmless three-body decays of neutral B mesons with a π0 in the final state (B0d,s → h+h′−π0) through the analysis of a 1.0 fb−1 data sample collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment at the LHC. Those modes are sensitive to CKM parameters and allow to test Standard Model predictions related to CP violation. Some of them, such as B0 s → K−π+π0 and B0 s → K+K−π0, have not been observed previously. This is the first analysis with energetic π0 in LHCb. To evaluate the detector performance for π0, D∗+ → D0(→ K−π+π0)π+ decays have been selected. This provides a clean and high statistics sample of neutral pions used to study their energy calibration as well as the effectiveness of the π0/γ separation tool of the experiment. Radiative decays are indeed the most dangerous backgrounds for the study of B0 d,s → h+h′−π0 modes. To select B0 d,s → h+h′−π0 events, a dedicated trigger algorithm has been implemented. It complements the standard online selections and significantly improves the efficiency. Offline, obvious backgrounds, mainly from charm decays, are rejected applying simple criteria. The sample is then further purified using a multivariate classifier. At last, information from the ring imaging Cherenkov detectors allows to separate π+π−π0, K±π∓π0 and K+K−π0 final states. A simultaneous fit of the reconstructed B mass spectra in the three subsamples is used to extract the signal yields. It accounts for the different backgrounds remaining as well as for the signal crossfeeds from one subsample to the other. The B0 → π+π−π0, B0 → K+π−π0 and B0 s → K+K−π0 contributions are clearly established. This is the first observation of the B0 s → K+K−π0 decay mode.

Scalar Mesons In Radiative Phi-meson Decays Into Charged K-meson States

Ozturk, Fahri 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The role of $f_{0}(980)$ and $a_{0}(980)$ scalar meson intermediate states in the mechanism of radiative $phi (1020)$ meson decay into two charged $K (494)$ mesons and a photon $phirightarrow K^{+} + K^{-} + gamma$ is investigated. For the contribution of scalar meson intermediate state two models are considered. In the kaon-loop model, the scalar meson intermediate state couples the final state to the initial $phi$ meson through a charged kaon-loop. The second model, called no-structure model, consist of point-like coupling of intermediate scalar meson state to the initial state. It is found that in the kaon-loop model, scalar meson intermediate state results in a considerable modification of the pure Bremsstrahlung photon spectrum.

Measurement and Interpretation of Moments of the Combined Hadronic Mass and Energy Spectrum in Inclusive Semileptonic B-meson Decays / Messung und Interpretation von Momenten der kombinierten hadronischen Massen- und Energieverteilung in inklusiven semileptonischen B-Mesonenzerfällen

Klose, Verena 02 April 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents first measurements of moments of the hadronic n_X^2 distribution measured in inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons to final states containing a charm quark, B->Xc l nu. The variable n_X^2 is a combination of the invariant mass of the charmed meson m_X, its energy in the B-meson rest-frame E_X, and a constant \tilde{\Lambda} = 0.65 GeV, n_X^2 = m_X^2 c^4 - 2 \tilde{\Lambda} E_X + \tilde{\Lambda}^2. The moments <n_X^k> with k=2,4,6 are measured as proposed by theory to constrain assumptions made in the theoretical description of inclusive observables in semileptonic B-meson decays. This description uses Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), an effective QCD combined with an Operator Product Expansion. The measurement is based on a sample of 231.6 million e+e- -> Y(4S) -> B\bar{B} events recorded with the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e--storage rings at SLAC. We reconstruct the semileptonic decay by identifying a charged lepton in events tagged by a fully reconstructed hadronic decay of the second B meson. Correction procedures are derived from Monte Carlo simulations to ensure an unbiased measurement of the moments of the n_X^2 distribution. All moments are measured requiring minimum lepton momenta between 0.8 GeV/c and 1.9 GeV/c in the rest frame of the B meson. Performing a simultaneous fit to the measured moments <n_X^k> up to order k=6 combined with other measurements of moments of the lepton-energy spectrum in decays B->Xc l nu and moments of the photon-energy spectrum in decays B->Xs gamma, we determine the quark-mixing parameter |V_{cb}|, the bottom and charm quark masses, the semileptonic branching fraction BR(B->X l nu), and four non-perturbative heavy quark parameters. Using HQE calculations in the kinetic scheme up to order 1/m_b^3 we find |V_{cb}| = (41.65 +- 0.43 +- 0.40 +- 0.58) x 10^{-3} and m_b = (4.570 \pm 0.033 \pm 0.043)GeV/c^2, where the first uncertainty refers to experimental contributions, the second to uncertainties in the HQE, and the third to theoretical uncertainties in the calculations of the semileptonic decay rate. All obtained results are consistent with previous determinations. The inclusion of the moments <n_X^6> decreases the uncertainty on the HQE parameters mu_{pi} and rho_{D}. Furthermore, the theoretical treatment of higher order corrections in the HQE used for the moments <m_X^k> has been verified with these new measurements.

Measurement of the CKM Matrix Element |Vub| with B -> rho e ny Decays at BABAR

Wilden, Leif 30 September 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The branching fraction for B -> rho e nu decays and the CKM matrix element |Vub| is measured with semileptonic exclusive B-meson decays using approximately 55 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar decays collected during the years 2000 and 2001 with the BABAR detector. The result is Br(B0 -> rho- e+ nu) = (3.39 +- 0.44 +- 0.52 +- 0.60) x 10^-4, and |Vub| = (3.69 +- 0.23 +- 0.27 +0.40-0.59) x 10^-3. The quoted errors are statistical, systematic, and theoretical respectively. These are combined results obtained using five different form-factor models. Individual results are also quoted. Phenomenology of Higgs Bosons Beyond the Standard Model

Wouda, Glenn January 2015 (has links)
After a long history of searches, a Higgs boson H was discovered by the ATLAS and the CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012. Its properties fit well the ones predicted by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. However, the SM can not explain other established properties of Nature, such as the existence of Dark Matter. For this reason, models beyond the SM should be considered. Such models often predict the existence of several Higgs bosons and this thesis explores some of those models. In particular, the possibility to discover a charged Higgs boson, which would be a clear sign of physics beyond the SM, is studied. A commonly studied extension of the SM is the framework of two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs), where there are five Higgs bosons. By confronting the parameter spaces of some 2HDMs with publically available data from the LHC, the prospects for finding the 2HDM Higgs bosons is presented through the calculation of production cross sections and decay branching ratios in various channels. A new kind of 2HDM, called the Stealth Doublet Model is presented and the properties of the Higgs bosons are studied. In this model, it is shown that in particular the properties of the charged Higgs boson H± have new features not exhibited in earlier studied models. Within the parameter space compatible with the LHC results, the production cross section for H± can be sizeable enough to be experimentally observed. Finally, the discovery prospects at the LHC, for a H± in the pp → tH± process, with the decays H± → HW± and H → bb, is studied in various models beyond the Standard Model. It is shown that for the supersymmetric models, this channel is beyond the discovery reach of the LHC. In some of the other studied models, in particular the Aligned 2HDM, the situation is improved and the channel is feasible.

Study of charmless three-body decays of neutral B mesons with the LHCb spectrometer / Pas de titre en français

Sobczak, Krzysztof Grzegorz 15 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis describes an exploratory work on three-body charmless neutral $B$ mesons decays containing either a $K_S$ or a $\pi^0$. The events are reconstructed with the LHCb spectrometer installed at Cern (Geneva, CH) recording the proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The phenomenology of such modes is rich and covers the possibility to measure all angles of the unitarity triangle linked to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. The single example of the $\gamma$ measurement is explored in this document. The LHC accelerator and the most relevant sub-detector elements of the LHCb spectrometer are described in details. In particular, emphasis is given to the calorimetry system for which the calibration and alignment of the PreShower (PRS) of the electromagnetic calorimeter has been performed. We used particles at minimum ionisation deposit for such a task. The calibration results until year 2011 are reported as well as the method of the PS alignment with respect to the tracking system of the spectrometer. A method to discriminate high energy $\pi^0$ and photon is introduced, based on electromagnetic cascade information combined into a multivariate analysis. The strategy to evaluate the performance is given and the tool is applied to the exploratory search of $B \to hh\pi^0$ final states. Additionally, we conducted a similar search for the modes $B_{d,s} \to K_Shh$, where $h$ can be either a charged kaon or a pion. The physics reach of such modes lies in the possibility of measuring the $\beta$ and $\beta_s$ CKM angles to be compared to their charmonia extraction. Differences in between these two determinations can be the sign of New Physics. The first step of this search is to establish the unobserved modes $B_{s} \to K_Shh$. We report in a fifth of the data 2011 statistics the first observation of the decay channel $B_{s} \to K_SK\pi$.

Resumovaná chirální poruchová teorie a studium Kl4 rozpadů / Resumovaná chirální poruchová teorie a studium Kl4 rozpadů

Motloch, Pavel January 2012 (has links)
The F and G formfactors of Kl4 decays are calculated to O(p4 ) in isospin limit in Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory. Formulae for reparametrization of low-energy constants L1 - L3 in terms of physical observables are derived. They are used to obtain values of these low-energy constants from recent experimental data, theoretical error of the result is estimated and dependence on parameters X, Z of spontaneous symmetry breaking of SU(3) × SU(3) chiral symmetry and quark mass ratio r is investigated. Convergence of the formfactors in Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory is discussed and it is suggested that inclusion of σ as an explicit degree of freedom into Chiral Perturbation Theory could significantly improve overall covergence of chiral series. 1

Studium vzácných rozpadů B-mesonů v experimentu ATLAS / Study of the rare B-meson decays with the ATLAS experiment

Biroš, Marek January 2020 (has links)
Title: Study of the rare B-meson decays with the ATLAS experiment Author: Marek Biroš Institute: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Supervisor: RNDr. Pavel Řezníček, Ph.D., Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Abstract: The rare B0 d → K∗0 (892) μμ decay is one of the B-physics channels sensitive to Beyond Standard Model effects. The potential deviation from Standard Model predictions could be observed in the angular distribution of this decay. The work compiles several sub-tasks at the initial stage of this complex analysis: decay angles fit validation and signal event preselection. The fit functions used in the analysis are verified on generated toy Monte Carlo data. Ranges of parameters, for which are these functions positive, are established and within this parametric space, the testing of possible intrinsic fit biases is evaluated. A dependence of the fit bias with respect to the collected number of events (expected in Run 2 as well as at HL-LHC) and to the different signal-to- background ratio is studied. The second part of the thesis deals with processing of raw reconstructed data from the detector into n-tuples resulting in a more compact dataset that would be used in the final analysis. Within the process, baseline cuts are applied in order to minimize size of final datasets by reducing...

Properties of baryons in the chiral quark model

Ohlsson, Tommy January 1997 (has links)
In this thesis, several properties of baryons are studied using the chiral quark model. The chiral quark model is a theory which can be used to describe low energy phenomena of baryons. In Paper 1, the chiral quark model is studied using wave functions with configuration mixing. This study is motivated by the fact that the chiral quark model cannot otherwise break the Coleman–Glashow sum-rule for the magnetic moments of the octet baryons, which is xperimentally broken by about ten standard deviations. Configuration mixing with quark-diquark components is also able to reproduce the octet baryon magnetic moments very accurately. In Paper 2, the chiral quark model is used to calculate the decuplet baryon magnetic moments. The values for the magnetic moments of the ++and− are in good agreement with the experimental results. The total quark spin polarizations are also calculated and are found to be significantly smaller than the non-relativistic quark model results. In Paper 3, the weak form factors for semileptonic octet baryon decays are studied in the chiral quark model. The “weak magnetism” form factors are found to be consistent with the conserved vector current (CVC) results and the induced pseudotensor form factors, which seem to be model independent, are small. The results obtained are in general agreement with experiments and are also compared with other model calculations. / QC 20100618
