Barrère, Lionel 09 July 2009 (has links)
Abstract

Jéssica Camara Siqueira 05 August 2011 (has links)
The research examines the terms \"document\" and \"information\" from a terminological approach, in order to compare the concepts and identify traits that help to better delineate the field of Information Science. The understanding of identity characteristics of Information Science is a necessity circumstantial, viewed in the context of postmodernity in the area seeks to \"establish itself\". The use of the orientation of the Communicative Theory of Terminology, who considers the pragmatic and social terms, proved to be an important resource to demonstrate and justify the symbiosis between the terms \"document\" and \"information\", confirming the characterization of the field of Science Information.

MODÉLISATION GÉNÉRIQUE DE DOCUMENTS MULTIMÉDIA PAR DES MÉTADONNÉES : MÉCANISMES D'ANNOTATION ET D'INTERROGATION

Jedidi, Anis 06 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)

FoXQ : a visual query language for XML

Abraham, Robin 26 September 2003 (has links)
XML is a very versatile data format that has been used to represent many different kinds of data, including web pages, books, business and accounting data, programming interfaces, vector graphics, system logs, and games. In a short span of time, it has gained wide acceptance as the document and data standard on the web. As more and more XML data gets generated everyday, a lot of research focus has been on query languages for XML. The World-Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has chosen XQuery as the standard language for querying XML. From an end-user point of view, XQuery sacrifices usability for expressiveness. We introduce FoXQ, a visual language that enables end users to query XML. FoXQ brings a lot of the functionality of XQuery within the reach of the end users without getting them embroiled in the intricacies of XQuery syntax. The query interface is form-based and the query model is based on a document metaphor in which the users formulate queries by filling out forms. / Graduation date: 2004

Ad-hoc Collaborative Document Annotation on a Tablet PC

Huang, Albert 01 1900 (has links)
The use of technology as an effective educational tool has been an elusive goal in the past. Specifically, previous attempts at using small personal computers in the classroom to aid students as collaborative and note-taking tools have been met with lukewarm responses. Many of these past attempts were hampered by inferior hardware and the lack of an efficient and user-friendly interface. With the recent introduction of Tablet PC products on the market, however, the limitations imposed on software developers for mobile computing systems have been dramatically lowered. We present a collaborative annotation system that allows students equipped with tablet computers to work cooperatively in either an ad-hoc or a structured wireless classroom setting. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

Search Term Selection and Document Clustering for Query Suggestion

Zhang, Xiaomin 06 1900 (has links)
In order to improve a user's query and help the user quickly satisfy his/her information need, most search engines provide query suggestions that are meant to be relevant alternatives to the user's query. This thesis builds on the query suggestion system and evaluation methodology described in Shen Jiang's Masters thesis (2008). Jiang's system constructs query suggestions by searching for lexical aliases of web documents and then applying query search to the lexical aliases. A lexical alias for a web document is a list of terms that return the web document in a top-ranked position. Query search is a search process that finds useful combinations of search terms. The main focus of this thesis is to supply alternatives for the components of Jiang's system. We suggest three term scoring mechanisms and generalize Jiang's lexical alias search to be a general search for terms that are useful for constructing good query suggestions. We also replace Jiang's top-down query search by a bottom-up beam search method. We experimentally show that our query suggestion method improves Jiang's system by 30% for short queries and 90% for long queries using Jiang's evaluation method. In addition, we add new evidence supporting Jiang's conclusion that terms in the user's initial query terms are important to include in the query suggestions. In addition, we explore the usefulness of document clustering in creating query suggestions. Our experimental results are the opposite of what we expected: query suggestion based on clustering does not perform nearly as well, in terms of the "coverage" scores we are using for evaluation, as our best method that is not based on document clustering.

Frames and Overflows in Rights Expression Languages

Gary J. Hausman 6 December 2006 (has links)
This paper analyzes the visions, schemas, and vocabularies of prominent rights expression languages, including Creative Commons, METS, ODRL, and MPEG-21. The paper extends Michel Callon’s sociological insight that all forms of human agency are multiple and diverse. Callon argues, in the context of economic sociology, that one must constantly decide between a strategy emphasizing “framing” as the norm with “overflows” treated as leaks, or conversely a strategy accepting “overflows” as the norm with “framing” as inherently imperfect. Callon’s categories are extended, through a modeling exercise, to the classification of current metadata schemes. The analysis suggests that metadata developers should explore what semantic choices and strictures are left out of metadata schemes, as well as those that are included. Such a thought exercise is especially useful in distinguishing areas suited for XML rights markup extensions.
