A organizaÃÃo lingÃÃstica do espaÃo nos e-mails pessoais: um estudo da dÃixis espacial / The linguistic organization of space in the personal e-mails: a study of spatial deixis.Elaine de Lima Oliveira 03 April 2009 (has links)
This research focuses on spatial deixis in personal emails. Our aim is to find out where to point the deictic spatial coordinates, and investigate how these coordinates are constructed in discourse and seek to draw a profile of these coordinates as a function of spatial distance of the interlocutors. To address the phenomenon under study, we focus our research on three pillars: the study of referral, which includes the study of spatial deixis we refer to us, especially the work of Dubois and Mondada (2003), Lyons (1977) Levinson (2007 ), the phenomenon of the construction of referring expressions, we consider very pertinent studies of Ariel (1996, 1998 and 2001) and his theory of accessibility, the semantics of space, we make use of the observations of Lyons (1977) and Saeed (2003) . With the theoretical completed, we analyzed 80 personal emails, 40 interactions and their interviews. The interviews helped to know a little more about the production situation of the messages and also helped to separate the messages into two major groups depending on the spatial distance is established between the interlocutors. Separate groups, marked the deictic and studied the conditions of production and semantics of deictic spaces, we come to several considerations, among which we point out the following: speakers who have significant spatial distance feel a greater need to address the space and it is located, factors diverse nature justifying the emergence of such coordinates in discourse, spaces are mainly metaphorical sense of time and now that point to a type of e-mail; speakers who present a short space feel little need to depict the space, the space depicted, in general, will be shared soon, so the more detail of such marks, the criterion morphosyntactic and first mention of justifying the provision of the coordinates in this block, the spaces have metaphorical idea of time, but point to a later.

The Effects of Heat Degradation Determined by HPLC on Mail-Order Delivered Levothyroxine Tablets, Epinephrine-Pen, and Timolol DropsHoge, Cristy, Govindarajan, Karthikeyan, Martin, Rose January 2007 (has links)
Class of 2007 Abstract / Objectives: The purpose/objective of this study is to determine the effects of heat exposure, on the levels of active ingredient in three selected medications with narrow therapeutic indices: levothyroxine, epinephrine, and timolol.
Methods: In order to complete the study, a variety of methods were carried out to simulate the desired and appropriate environmental conditions. The drug selection was based on the medications pharmacokinetic properties. Levothyroxine was considered ideal to include in the study due to the medication's short shelf life and narrow therapeutic window. Epinephrine was selected since it is a life-saving medication, which has been reported to degrade to a significant extent under extreme heat. Timolol was chosen since its liquid formulation can be unstable when exposed to extreme heat. Epi- Pen ®, levothyroxine 150 mcg, and timolol 0.5% were mailed from Phoenix on 7/12/06, via FedEx in order to simulate the mail order prescription delivery process. Alternatively, other samples of the medications were also placed at room temperature and a variety of heat and humidity conditions. The temperature and relative humidity profiles for the mail order drugs were monitored by a temperature and RH device.
Three different assessments were made for each drug. Within each assessment, three analyses were conducted on that same sample. For the timolol drops, each 5ml (??)bottle was assayed three times in addition to baseline measurements. Likewise, the levothyroxine tablets and epinephrine injections each were analyzed three times from the same sample, from three different lots. In addition, we also examined the degredation of these three drugs when subjected to constant temperature exposure of 37, 45, 45 with RH, and 55 degrees Celsius in a lab oven. Samples were collected after 1-. 4-, and 7-days of heat exposure in both the mail box and the oven; 7/14/06, 7/17/06, and 7/20/06, respectively. Each medication was analyzed by its respective high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The amount of drug taken for each sample was 0.5mL of epinephrine, 10 tablets of levothyroxine, and 0.5mL of timolol were used in the preparation for HPLC analysis.
Results: The temperature and RH profile were recorded and graphed. The temperature measured in the mail box ranged from ~75 degreees Fahrenheit to ~140 degrees Fahrenheit. Based on the extrapolation to the baseline, the amount of drug measured on days 1, 4, and 7 were the following: 1) Levothyroxine: 123.66 mcg, 118.61mcg, and 119.3 mcg, respectively; 2) EpiPen: 1121.48 mcg/ml, 1215.52 mcg/ml, and 1167.22 mcg/ml, respectively; 3) timolol: 6766.30 mcg/ml, 6659.52 mcg/ml, and 6508.48 mcg/ml, respectively.
Conclusions: The medications studied were exposed to temperatures above the manufacturer’s recommended storage conditions for the majority of the time. Despite being out of opitmal conditions, the results indicated that all three drugs did not have significant degradation.

The Advertising Effect of Personalized DMChen, Chih-Hau 08 February 2007 (has links)
The increased popularity of personal marketing and printing on demand technology has substantially changed the advertising practice. Taking direct mail (DM) as an example, DM is no longer treated as ¡§junk mail¡¨ but useful marketing tool after combining personal information with interesting advertisement, such as combining customers¡¦ credit card statements with customized advertisement based on their purchasing behavior. Personalized DM has become a brand new approach for advertising that may lead to better communication effect.
In this research, we formulated a research framework based on the Advertisement Attitude Mediating Model, which measures the effect of advertisement in three aspects: attitude towards the advertisement, attitude towards the advertised product, and purchase intention. Product category (shopping goods and specialty goods) and need for cognition (high and low) were moderators.
Experiment method was utilized in this research to examine the effect of personalized DM. A total of 329 college students participated the experiment and they were divided into six groups with different settings in three different degrees of personalization (personalized, half-personalized, and none-personalized) and two product categories. Among them, 235 eventually completed the experiment to provide valid data for analysis.
The results include: (1) personalized information has a positive effect on consumers¡¦ attitude towards DM; (2) personalized product recommendation can improve consumers¡¦ attitude towards product and increase their purchase intention; (3) A higher degree of personalization produce the better advertising effects; (4) The effect of personalization varies in different product category. Specialty goods is more suitable for personalized DM than shopping goods; (5) The consumer¡¦s need for cognition does not affect the effect of personalized DM.

Stratégies d'apprentissage des langues secondes dans un environnement informatisé : une méta-analyse qualitative de l'utilisation du courrier électroniqueLee Men Chin, Patricia 18 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to Second-language (L2) learning. It analyzes the use of electronic mail as a cognitive tool and aims at providing a better understanding of the learning process in a computerized environment. In this meta-analysis, qualitative data were drawn from independent studies (n=29) published between 2000 and 2010.
The thesis briefly reviews historical and theoretical perspectives on Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and language learning strategies. Then, with reference to Oxford’s (1990) typology, it investigates the use of learning strategies in email exchanges or projects of L2 learners. The identification of five categories of learning strategies (cognitive, social, meta-cognitive, compensatory and affective) constitutes the ground work to defining the paradigms of L2 learning associated with the use of electronic mail.
The study draws parallels between this electronic learning environment and Jonassen et al.’s (1999, 2008) five principles of meaningful learning, namely active, constructive, intentional, authentic and cooperative learning. Furthermore, a (non-exhaustive) list of five variables associated with successful L2 learning via email interaction (sustained communication, proficiency level in L2, audience interaction, structure of the language-related task and the topics of email correspondence) is presented.
As demonstrated in this research, this ICT’s ability to provide a favorable L2 learning environment is threefold. First, the use of electronic mail, as a cognitive tool, fosters learners’ activation of learning strategies. Second, patterns reflecting the principles of self-appropriated learning in the electronic environment suggest its role in the development of transversal skills. Finally, attitude changes towards L2 culture and stereotypes and towards L2 learning, among others, indicate modifications to learners’ behavior.
This study also provides updates to Oxford’s (1990) typology of learning strategies in the five categories identified, based on data from the 29 studies.
The pedagogical implications, discussed in the conclusion, draw attention to the qualitative and non-linguistic learning outcomes, as well as to the social, affective and cultural dimensions related to the use of email interaction in L2 learning.
