Men's Perspectives on a spouse or partner's postpartum depression

Roehrich, Susan K. 02 October 2007 (has links)
Men as well as women are affected by the life-changing events of pregnancy and childbirth. The nature of fatherhood and the role of the male in the birthing process have undergone significant changes in the past several decades. While this phenomenon has been well-documented regarding the changes a father experiences during a healthy pregnancy and birth, there is little research that addresses the implications for the man when his spouse or partner is diagnosed with postpartum depression. Approximately 10 to 20% of birth mothers are affected by some form of this disorder (Greenberg & Springen, 2001). The literature on this topic has grown steadily in an effort to better understand the reasons and implications of such a diagnosis for a woman. This researcher's intent was to identify the perspectives of men whose spouses or partners were diagnosed with postpartum depression. Understanding this situation from their perspectives can represent information regarding the effects of postpartum depression on the interpersonal relationship and, secondarily, the family unit. In particular, relationship strains between the men and their spouses or partners and the impact on the adjustment to having an infant to care for were explored. Medical records were reviewed in a medical practice for significant scores on the mother's Edinburgh Postnatal Screening Scale. After a series of elimination steps, seven men were identified and willing to participate in the research. In an hour-long interview, the men discussed their experience with their spouse/partner's postpartum depression. Field notes were taken before, during and immediately following the interviews to add clarification, using nonverbal responses to the setting and interview questions. The transcripts of the interviews were coded to identify common categories, which in turn generated themes of emotional deregulation, seeking normalcy, understanding self, and disappointment. Anger was noted by the seven men as a response on several levels to the postpartum depression. In addition to anger, frustration was expereinced with the lack of information received and the lack of response from the medical community as a whole. Several of the men reported surprise at their previous emotions resurfacing so readily when answering the interview questions. / Ph. D.

Elemental - Connecting the User with the Planet through Architecture

Almashal, Leith A. 06 July 2018 (has links)
The modern world has forgotten a crucial part of what historically has been a beautiful experience in our homes: its connection to the planet. This thesis proposes a mix-use building that acts as an instrument to connect the users with the planet while maintaining contemporary standards of living. I believe that human beings have an innate tendency to connect with nature. The building design will have a passive aspect that is experiential and the active aspect that is functional. The spaces come alive through design by translating the planets four elements as a part of the daily lives of the users, activating the Fifth element, the Spirit. Connecting with nature on a fundamental level will enhance the inhabitants experience and create a connection with the planet through the spaces we inhabit. / Master of Architecture / Throughout history our homes reacted to the rains, winds, sun, and earth. Today, there is a disconnect between the dwelling and the planet. This thesis observes this disconnect and responds to it through a mix-use building design that acts as an instrument to connect the users with the planet while maintaining current standards of living. Connecting with the planet will enhance the inhabitants experience by creating a connection through the spaces we inhabit.

Witches or wise women

MacVane Phipps, Fiona E. January 2013 (has links)
No / This article presents findings from my PhD study entitled Midwifery knowledge and the medical student experience. The research study sought to explore the question: 'What do medical students learn from midwives?' In the first part of this dual-phase project I conducted a Delphi study with an international panel of midwives to examine the concept of 'midwifery knowledge' (MacVane 2013a). Data from the Delphi survey were used to inform the second phase, which employed a longitudinal case study approach to explore medical students’ experiences of working with midwives during a specialist obstetric rotation. Thirteen medical students, who were recruited from a fourth-year cohort, participated in interviews at the start, middle and end of their specialist obstetric rotation. The students spent the majority of the rotation at their local teaching hospital (LTH), but also spent an interim two-week period at a variety of district general hospitals (DGH).

The impact of customers' experience of quality on brand loyalty : a study of health and diet online communities

Zafir, Haneen Osama January 2016 (has links)
Consumer experience plays an increasingly significant role in influencing the success of most businesses. The concept of ‘consumer experience’ has become an important area of study within the disciplines of marketing and consumer behavior. Regardless of its positive attention, this phenomenon has received in recent years; the clarification of consumer experience quality in online communities has remained unclear and needs a detailed theoretical base. In addition, it has been assumed that there is a relation between consumer experience quality and brand loyalty, nevertheless, there is limited research to confirm this theoretical proposition. The purpose of this study is to gain an in-depth perspective on the concept of consumer experience quality and its dimensions in the online community. The Internet has changed the behavior of consumers significantly where individuals have used online communities to interact with one another. These online communities enable individuals to connect globally in order to communicate effectively since inappropriate communication activities can affect the image consumers have formed with a particular organization from online social networks. As a result, the traditional way of communication is changed using interactive platforms. Data was collected through qualitative and quantitative research using an online blog where consumers shared ideas, experiences and interacted with each other about their experiences of Weightwatchers and Slimming World in the United Kingdom. The qualitative research was done by applying Netnography technique that uses content analysis of consumer reviews of their experiences in the Health and Diet online communities. Using the PLS-SEM, the structural model proposed in this study revealed a significant positive relationship between pragmatic experience and overall quality experience. Thus, the current study maintains the notion that pragmatic experience is a key determinant of overall quality experience. In addition, finding of this study suggests that consumers assess their online experience when participating in “health and diet online communities”. These pragmatic components are reflected in the consumers’ benefits gained during interacting with the online community. Furthermore, it was evident that consumers view the online community as important in relation to their feelings and enjoyment because the forum provides them with the opportunities and preferences to share health and diet information with other community members. Consequently, the participants in the “health and diet online communities” will eventually generate moods, feelings and emotional experiences after interacting with each other in order to develop an affective relationship with a company’s brand and products.

Konsten att skapa upplevelser : En komparativ studie om hur upplevelseföretag resonerar om lyckade, minnesvärda och extraordinära upplevelser

Duvdahl, Jenny, Frisk, Malin January 2016 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of what companies think is needed for experiences to become successful and memorable.
