A cytomorphological study of Pelvetiopsis limitata (Setchell) Gardner

Zanon , Carol Aileen Rosemary (Hennigan), January 1961 (has links)
A cytomorphological study of Pelvetiopsis limitata (Setchell) Gardner confirmed a cytological alternation of generations in the plant. Approximately thirty-two chromosomes in the haploid phase alternate with sixty-four chromosomes in the diploid phase. Pelvetiopsis is oogamous and monoecious. Antheridia and oogonia are produced in flask-shaped conceptacles. Nuclear division is regular in developing gametangia. Reduction of chromosome number appears to take place during the first nuclear division in the antheridium and oogonium. No centrosomes or chromophilous spherules are discernible during nuclear division. In the oogonium the two divisions of the meiotic sequence are followed by a mitotic division producing eight nuclei. Two eggs of unequal size are formed in the oogonium. The larger egg is uninucleate and functional, while the smaller is seven-nucleate. At maturity 4 to 16 chromocenters may be observed in the nucleus of the large egg prior to its liberation. Before the release of the large egg from the oogonium approximately 32 chromosomes differentiate as the nucleus enters mitotic prophase. The smaller egg formed in the oogonium usually disintegrates after extrusion from the conceptacle. The inner layers of the wall of the oogonium are soon discarded after liberation. Aberrant eggs occur. Two eggs of equal size may form or there may be as many as 5 eggs of various sizes. Binucleate eggs are sometimes present. In the antheridium 4 mitotic divisions follow meiosis producing 64 nuclei. The cytoplasm differentiates around each nucleus and 64 spermatozoids are formed. These are released by the rupture of the outer layer, and by gelatinization of the inner layer of the wall of the antheridium. Approximately 30 - 32 chromosomes were observed at the second nuclear division in the antheridial initial. Oogamy in Pelvetiopsis restores the diploid complement of approximately 64 chromosomes. Fertilization occurs after the gametes have been liberated from the conceptacle. The egg is naked at the time of fertilization. The first division of the zygote is transverse to the plane in which the rhizoid develops. One, sometimes two, primary rhizoids form. Several other septate rhizoids develop later. The anatomy of the thallus of Pelvetiopsis is similar to other Fucaceae. Cryptostomata are rare and caecostomata are absent. Sterilized filtered seawater cooled to 6° to 9°C provides a suitable medium in which Pelvetiopsis limitata may be grown in culture. A minimum light intensity of 250 foot-candles promotes satisfactory development. / Science, Faculty of / Botany, Department of / Graduate

Elizabeth Jane Gardner : her life, her work, her letters

Pearo, Charles. January 1997 (has links)
Elizabeth Jane Gardner (1837-1922) was an American artist who lived in Paris from 1864-1922. She was the most frequently represented woman artist of any nationality at the Paris Salon in the late nineteenth century, and the only American woman to have ever won a medal (1887). In 1896, she married William Bouguereau, the major academic painter of the time. Yet in spite of these distinctions, Elizabeth Gardner has received surprisingly little scholarly attention. / This thesis is a biographical and analytical study of the expatriate artist, based on her unpublished letters in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. Though the focus is primarily on her years as a practicing artist in Paris (1864 to 1896), attention is also given to her early and late years, and to the collaborative nature of her relationship with Bouguereau. / A chronology of the artist, as well as inventories of her paintings and letters are also included.

Dufvenberg, Katarina January 2013 (has links)

Production of A thousand clowns

Sowle, Clifford John 01 June 1968 (has links)
The project chosen for partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching in the field of Theater Arts was the production of Herb Gardner’s comedy, A Thousand Clowns. This particular play was chosen because it met production requirements more closely than any other script considered for the project. The project involved, after selection of the script, casting the characters, a six-week rehearsal period, consulting with the technical staff on matters of lighting, setting, and costumes, four performances at the Portland State College Idea Theater, two performances at the Oregon State Penitentiary, and the compiling of a complete Play Production Book which describes all phases of the production. Existing standards of play direction and projection book composition were observed throughout the production period. Special emphasis was placed on each actor’s development of his character, remembering that an educational theater situation is also a learning situation for all concerned. Character relationships became extremely important to the sense of script, as the play is actually built on a series of character sketches in which we see many contemporary American types. The play’s conflict is seen through character and is obvious from the first few lines of Act I. Murray Burns has made his value judgments on American society and has found the latter to be far below his expectations. He is now attempting to live by his own eccentric rules and, at the same time, retain custody of his nephew, who is in the process of being removed from his home by the Bureau of Child Welfare. Into this theme of individuality versus structure is woven the familiar boy-meets-girl pattern. The entire play, consequently, depends on character and inter-character relationships. The play’s pure entertainment value was stressed, rather than any moral message which might have been present in the script. The play is funny, but there are definite deficiencies in the areas of plot development and the play’s philosophy. The purpose of the production was to present consistently a humorous, enjoyable evening of theater for the audiences and a beneficial learning situation for the actors, director, and production staff. After several casting difficulties and minor technical slow-downs, A Thousand Clowns enjoyed near capacity houses at P.S.C. and an extremely warm reception from the members of Oregon State Prison’s Upward Bound program. The show increased in effectiveness at each performance. Character came through to the audiences. Serious pace problems involving quick timing from beginning to end were solved. The actors did the work themselves. They improved their craft and learned and benefitted from this experience. From the director’s standpoint, the experience was enjoyable and profitable, provoking new ideas and calling upon new methods to work them out.

Interaktiva skrivtavlor : i undervisningen

Hedlin, Annika January 2010 (has links)
2010ht4749
